Setting Up His FIRST NAS

- A friend of mine is helping me with some editing, so in return, I'm setting him up with a Synology NAS. I thought it would be fun to film that process. Enjoy!

Also, apologies for the subpar audio. I really tried to make sure we had a good mic setup, but the recorder failed so we had to default to a backup mic.

Apologies for the subpar audio. I really tried to make sure we had a good mic setup, but the recorder failed so we had to default to a backup mic. Hope it's not too bad!
Where is Hardware Hell? WHERE IS HE.
To be clear… it’s haven not heaven haha
no worries
It's not that horrible tbh
no bad man✌️
I really enjoyed this. You both work well together and it was nice to see a different approach to your filming. To be honest I didn't have any issues with the audio.
Thanks! It’s good to hear, especially with something so differrnt
Love this! Perfect video if I ever need to show my family how NAS works!
Thanks! And yeah I never thought of that as being a use case, but great!
How do you always make just the right video right when I need it? Really love your work, keep it up!
Haha glad to hear that, and thanks!
Great video! Always fun to help someone else get new tech up and running!
Thanks Dave!
@@HardwareHaven Hey I *FINALLY* got my server rebuild video edited and it is rendering as I write (well, type) this. It was an adventure and a *really* tedious video edit with all the screen captures!!!😁 Hope to release it Sat AM
Nice! I’ll check it out
colton is becoming the next linus tech tips with the drops and regrets of certain sentences
also do you plan on releasing "If You Want To" and "C Jam Blues" on their own?
Hahaha oh gosh..
And not sure. I might do “If you want to”
@@HardwareHaven that would be amazing, I love the way "If You Want To" sounds
I liked this. Maybe post a follow up about his experiences in his workflow using the NAS.
My 2 12TB Hard drives just arrived and my DS1522+ NAS arrives tomorrow and I can't wait to set it up.
Nice!!! Have fun
Adding the drive dropping part really enhances the whole video ;)
Yeah thanks for reminding me about that haha
@@HardwareHaven no worries hahaha
It was a very nice video, maybe we can count it as integrating the tailscale in the future and using the device when it works remotely.
That drive you dropped will be the first to fail. 😁
Possibly. Could be the last
4:08 Linus Moment
Great video, but IMO the SHR1 (RAID5) or SHR2 (RAID6) would have been best for him. If I understand correctly, he'll have to replace all his drives (1 at a time) with larger drives to get more storage. With SHR1, he'd only have to replace 2 (also 1 at a time) to gain more. Although... SHR2 would be replacing 3 drives and at that point you might as well just replace the 4th too 🤷♂
I would rather trust that PCs will exist in the future than trusting that Synology keeps supporting SHR forever. Waking up to a broken drive and discovering that the RAID format is no longer supported by the owner, is a nightmare that should remain a nightmare and never turn into reality.
@@jeschinstad it's still just a software RAID. I've put SHR1 drives into an OMV server and they were discovered. I'll have to do more testing in VMs to verify that, of course, but I'm not concerned about losing access to my data because one of the largest consumer NAS manufacturers suddenly decides not to support their flavor in the future.
@@BenReese: That's up to you. One of the largest accounting firms I mean, many of the largest consumer manufacturers have gone completely bye-bye because something better came along.
@@jeschinstad and I hope something better does come along. It's just not a real concern. There are thousands of Synology NASs available on the used market. Even if Synology used a proprietary software RAID that no other Linux OS could read - and I don't believe they do, there would still be a used market available to recover that data.
And let's not forget that this should not be the only place the data lives. If it is, antiquated hardware is a far less concern than dieing drives.
SHR is one of the best reasons to buy Synology and about the only reason I'd chose Synology over DIY.
@@BenReese: You do know you can use different sized drives with MD RAID?
Love the video. You dropping the herd drive on the table killed me LMAO
It killed me too… I felt so bad haha
Well it goes to show that these drives "take a licking, and keep on ticking" old commercial for those that remember
Quite entertaining and give a list of items to initiate someone to NAS as im doing now. Kudows
No audio issues here! It sounds fine :)
Nice!
I'm curious. What is the process of upgrading the NAS drives? Say now you want to upgrade to all to 10TB each. Can you make a video out of that?
23:04 You were saying to hide the folder in Network Places. However it does show in the Finder. Or is that because the root is displayedand has different settings? Isn't it easier to always display, and just let the rights determine whether there is access.
I believe you are supposed to lick the drives while powered up for optimal performance. 😂
Nice bro ❤❤❤
Thanks!
Currently removing all the HDD's from my PC to a NAS box with TrueNAS, weird how UA-cam recommended me this video, its like it knows lol.
man, that adsl2+ att modem hits different. hope he doesn't need to download tons of footage locally.
former 18/1 plan user
Haha yeah… I think he said something about looking to upgrade to fiber here soon
@@HardwareHaven so many game nights ruined by updates.
Isn't it kind of risky to use RAID5/6 with btrfs? I thought I read that it was prone to failures.
Synology have a workaround where they make a raid first and on top of the "virtual harddrive" have btrfs. Solving that problem, but loosing out on some benefits of btrfs.
i really enjoy your videos, can you help me create a home sever with pi-hole, nas and streaming apps for TV or wifi ?
why did you not go for RAID10? Less CPU intensive than RAID6, and probably faster (same redundancy as well)
Not same redundancy. Raid 6 can always handle 2 failures. RAID 10 only can handle 2 if they are in separate mirror groups.
@@HardwareHaven True! your right, I forgot that part.
@@3xrd965 No worries! I just so happened to be processing between the two not too long ago. And the nice thing about the specific NAS is that it does have a pretty good CPU, so that's putting it to use haha
NAS are great.. but if a fire..
wait i got it.. a pull cord to pull it out of the house without having to go in after it w fire! 🤣
First thing I grab (after my family) is my NAS during a fire, lol.
Lol. That’s possibly my second priority as well haha
Good thing cloud backups exist though
Nas
Waiting for new video bro 🥺

Hi
Hi
There was some awkwardness going on there… duds wondering “why’d he give me $1000 in stuff?”
@Hardware Haven
You didn't blur out the email at 10:41... might want to take care of that.
btrfs?? - this was too polished not janky enough - overdone - for nas people really need 2 sep discrete machines - why? everything breaks and do you value your data
Not sure what all you’re saying here. But regarding backups, just because I didn’t mention it in this video doesn’t mean it’s not something I recommend
@@HardwareHaven time to do a raid0 on dollarstore flashdrives
I like how you blur the qc Id out but then it's fully visible in his address bar😂😂😂
