As a musician, I love scilence. Music to me is invaluable, but a constant stream of it takes away some of the divinity that comes from listening to great music. The point about minimalism here is, you can listen to music, but do it with intention and to get value out of it.

I certainly could never give up music, it’s one of my passions, particularly watching live music. However I totally agree that sometimes we need the silence and I know I need to do that more often. I tend to listen to podcasts more than music these days but music brings me such joy, it’s one of the things I need to clear the clutter to be able to enjoy!

I'm so glad I'm not alone on this. It's been about a year since I played music on my phone . I love the peace and silence. I hear music and people and everyday noise around me that I really appreciate the silence. I always loved music and still do so it feels weird that I don't listen to music anymore. It doesn't make sense but I'm just glad I'm not the only one.

Music will put you up in a dreams world.... i m addicted to music because of my deprassion from childhood.... but my advice to everybody is to stop listening to music to "improuve" your mood.
Be real, and improuve your mood with your acctions, and stop dreaming.

Such a unique perspective that I have never considered before! You've inspired me to go for an entire day without music (of course I can't control other sounds necessarily, but I can control my actions). This is something I probably have never done once in my life as long as I have had access to music. I have found so much in silence so far and i find myself getting better at listening to my inner voice over time : )

I am a musician, I play almost every single day, I like to think music is my entire life, but at the same time I almost never listen to music. I do sometimes set off an hour or two to just listen and it's great! I think the balance between silence and music makes me appreciate it more. My roommates are almost the opposite, they have music on for almost everything. Brushing teeth, making breakfast, doing laundry and sometimes even sleeping. I only wish they'd be a bit more quiet with it lol

Yeah i’m a musician too and I get it. Making music is a very deliberate thing for me and I don’t enjoy just listening to it passively. Only time I listen to it is when my bandmates ask me to listen to something specifically. I usually listen to podcasts if I need entertainment. If I want music I make my own.

Althrough i grew up in a musical environnement, i don't appreciate music anymore. It gives me headaches, and i prefer silence or white noise.
I consider that our daily environnement is polluted by music. We have music everywhere all the time, and it has become like a disease. Too much of something kills it. That's what happens with music. We don't need music to expérience great or dramatic moments. People love, succeed, got violented/killed, etc... without music. It's like a way to force you to feel what you "should feel" and even makes you loose the taste of reality.
I think we need to learn to listen to silence and nature again...

As a sensitive person, you need music to connect with on a daily basis and that's that, and I understand we all get to a point where we need to switch it off to enjoy silence, which is also highly valuable, but I don't think it's necessary to take it to the extreme. Now, if you're sitting on a cliff and enjoying nature, riding a bike or sleeping, of course I undestand you don't want music involved. That's not a strange thing at all, most people I know wouldn't listen to music while doing those activities. Maybe the title is a bit misleading and should be, 'I only listen to music when I feel I want to'. Cool, you got it, we all do the same.

I am a musician but I hardly listen to music these day. I came here looking for validation, To know that I'm not crazy or less of an artist because of it. I think you explained this perfectly. Most of the time the only music that I wanna listen to is music that I'm playing in the moment. I feel like I'm constantly distracted and you're right, I never am truly listening to the music that's playing in the car or on my phone. Most of the time I drive in silence or I listen to podcasts, And I find it refreshing. I can't stand the pressure of neebing to constantly add volume to my life just because I'm a musician. Loving music doesn't have to mean sacrificing my love of silence. ❤️

I’ve been on a non-music journey as of late. 2+ weeks so far and it’s pretty intense. The urge has dimmed down since the first few days (those were tough). I’m doing it as a detox in hopes to reset my focus and thoughts. Also because I think music is beautiful, and I found myself listening to music just because, which made its value decrease for me. Lately, it’s difficult to do tasks or get motivation without music. I don’t want that no more, and I don’t want to make music the only way for me to cope with any emotions. I’m shooting for at least 90 days, then I’ll see if I go the rest of 2022 without it!

I can agree with you on so many points that you mentioned, Only someone who has seen both phases know the difference of 'listening vs not listening to music' , from my personal point of view, music detox made me more, I would say smarter, I had more mental capacity to process my thoughts and emotions, and surprisingly more Eureka moments, but you know the worst part is that music is VERY accessible, it's EVERYWHERE, people don't enjoy silence anymore, maybe they just don't want to dive into their souls, they are more into consuming (absorbing anything from the surroundings) than reflecting and giving out from within.
P.s. your accent is cute, is it Swedish btw?😅

I grew up in the 90s, music was very special to all of us. First of all, the only way the access music was to buy the audio casette or CD. I had to save a month of lunch money to buy an album. This made us appreciate it a lot more. The best part was calling all your friends home because you had the latest album. We friends would get together create mix tapes for each other, listen together and act like we were performing in a concert! I realise the main this was the shared experience, musoc gave us something to do together. Once we grew up and we started having chance to drive a car, we friends would be singing our favorite songs at the top of our voices! Man ... Those were the best days of my life.

I don’t listen to hardly any music, I don’t really enjoy music these days. The only type of music I like is old school punk. Some may argue that punk is not music. ☺️ What i do listen to is audiobooks/dramas/podcasts. I listen to them whenever I can. I can appreciate what you are saying though, I grew up in an extremely quiet house, no music, very little tv. It’s funny when I think of my childhood I think of things I was thinking rather than things I did. You have made me think about what I constantly shove through my brain though. I’ve been in a creative slump for several months, the point you made about creativity absolutely made sense. I somehow forgot that a lot of ideas came to me while having nothing to do, even while being bored as well as of course during the act of creating, maybe it’s time for me to unplug.

Not crazy, I find this interesting. Myself I like music, but most times I enjoy silence. I was raised without humor, not raised around other things, anyways enough about that, I do not find you weird, I find it interesting. I am sensitive to sounds, sometimes music takes me away from pain, but most times I do enjoy silence, I can just never find silence. I feel like a misplaced soul in a world of ruin and noise. I love the woods, because I always found silence and peace. Something I could never find here. Most people cannot deal with themselves, so they find escapes via sounds. Which is why the garage is nice at late nights when I am over stimulated. You sound sane in a world of insane.

I just love music but I also don’t listen to it all the time. I like to be in complete silence in the morning for at least 2 hours, start the day been more in touch with me, also l like to walk, get bus and read in silence. But I have to say that nothing creates a sexy mood like music on date. 🤣 So I still kind of listen to it, but only when it fit a purpose. In the end I think that it doesn’t matter if you do listen to it or not, I think that like every kind of consuming should be rationalize and adapted for yourself. As a musician, I agree with your view. There must be a conscious balance where we explore different states of mind.
Too much music drains us and distract us from our beautiful soudless experience of reality.
Personally, I can't help but to take musical rests when it makes me feel off. I might stay music-less for a week or two. I enjoy that state of my silent mind along with many other gifts that the world gives us that don't relate to music. I’m just a dumb caveman, I usually listen to any genre of music as long as it sounds good and make me feel a specific emotion, the problem is finding new music. I get lazy to find new music. Now, I don’t find any music appealing anymore. I don’t relate to love songs, the aggressive mancho attitude of rap songs, living in the country life of country music, too stupid to understand metal music, the vibe of rave or indie music…I simply don’t relate to music anymore. Music is a strong influence for me, and I feel like I’m not appreciating the song the artist made the way they want me to enjoy it.
I’m weird, sometimes I skip right to the chorus because that’s the only part I like about the song or maybe I like the “verses” more than the chorus and I skip to that part. I also don’t understand the technicalities of music creation. I don’t know the background or the backstory of that project or what technology was used to make that project or even especially don’t understand how that tech made everything come together. I don’t know what Reverb is, Treble, etc.

I use to listen to music all the time, since I was a teen until I was 25....After the new stuff the music industry has been putting out I realised music really is harmful, especially mainstream music...I feel more clear minded now that I stopped listening to all music..Maybe when I start homeschooling my daughter when she's old enough we will listen to Beethoven or Christian music...something that has nothing to do with drugs, sex, robbing people and just deplorable behavior. .

I'm not exactly minimalist but I have one simple rule, no music outside of home, no headphones outside of home. Beside birds and nature, that's all great, you also need to be conscious of your surroundings.

If I was a singer this would be the record I'd make. Hands down. But that doesn't mean this is for everybody. Music lovers come under 2 umbrellas [...] those who use it for growth and spiritual fulfillment and those who use it for mere background music. The thing is, this record is too extreme to play the middle of the fence.

This sounds kinda silly to me.
"I LOVE music... I don't listen to it." Seems weird to actively avoid something you love.
Why does it have to be all or nothing?
I'm a musician, music is everything to me, but I still enjoy silence and if I don't feel like listening to music... I don't.
That being said, I think you would really enjoy 4'33" by John Cage. Just the concept alone I feel you would enjoy.

I'm a musician and love everything about music, but I listen to it less than my non musician friends. They have music on from the moment they wake up till they sleep. I spend most of my time in silence I can only listen for around 4hrs max before I become exhausted. I suspect most people aren't really listening to music it's just noise to avoid silence

Music 🎵🎶 traps you in the past and your current situation, and makes you think about them
It interferes with emotional situations you do not need. A total waste of mental space.
The more you immerse in it, the more you get thirsty.
It drains you, leaves you as an empty void constantly needing more and more supply just to get going.
It is a recipe for addiction, an eventual mental bancruptcy.
Look at the most accomplished musicians, did they attain peace?
Most will end up befriending vices of liquors, drugs and untamed desires.
The essence that makes their music successful is the same thing that destroys their inside.
Even after such self-sacrifice act, their music label and management are the ones who reap the most profit.
In the giant machinary of music industry, a musician is one tiny replacable screw in abundant supply, always prone to exploitation and abuse.
If you have conscience, you do not want to be part of such system, not even as a consumer.
Music competes with the Qur'an in the real estate of the mind.
Just like water and oil, music and the Qur'an do not mix, a gain in one is a loss of the other.
The Qur'an gives you freedom and makes you think about the future, a supply of regenerative happiness from the Ultimate Source.
The best medication. If only you understand.
I don't think everyone will understand me.
