Thank you for this lovely video! I'm a minimalist by necessity because I live in an 11 sqm apartment. I love your "no rules" definition of minimalism because I perceive the "certain number of items" rule to be simply pretentious. My definition is that I don't own anything in the first place, but I only get to borrow and use it for a while. It's up to me to take good care of those things, including myself. That automatically limits the number of items and greatly raises my appreciation for everything, so total win!
The struggle to get rid of things sustainably... yeah. It's so hard and makes getting rid of things so much slower. But you're right it makes you think twice before you get something new
What I have learned is that the order in which to declutter really does not matter. For me, decluttering is a very intuitive process and I have decided to declutter my bed frame and my desk + chair long before I could let go other, much smaller things. I now sleep on a matress on the floor which I can put up against the wall during the day (blanket + pillow stays on a shelf) and have a small foldable camping table which I use with one of those 2-step ladders as a chair. That instantly gave me a lot of space in my room, which I value more than those items. (Plus, it is so much better for my back! Maybe going to declutter the matress also, soon.) Meanwhile I still own quite the amount of hobby supplies. It felt good at that point to declutter those big things, so why follow a specific order and wait? You can have very little furniture and empty rooms but still own other items which other people would find less essential. Everyone's emotions are different when it comes to what we are attached to. And essential has a different meaning for everyone. But yeah, I have similar difficulties with dealing with craft supplies as you described. That one was really relatable!
“If you can pack everything up in one day and move it in one car load, that is freedom.” Yes yes yes. I moved country and maintained a storage unit of stuff for five years, and then when i came back to the USA from Mexico, i had to go through my storage until plus 40 years of stuff in my parents house while i moved again and downsized them to a smaller apartment. I spent two years of my life just going through and moving around stuff. I will never do that again.
When you mentioned not owning and skirts even for special occasions that resonated with me. But for a different reason, I wear skirts 90% of the time and would prefer not to own any pants at all😂
Oh, my gosh, I'm glad you brought up things that are unwanted, but not garbage & can't be given away either! I have so much of that and it's a decent chunk of my clutter. I love how you always emphasize the fact that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to how many exact things someone owns. You're very inclusive when it comes to people's personal definition of minimalism for their own personal needs. It's great!
I love the video! The way you talk about all this doubts, without judging or pressure to going extremely below the level of comfort. Without prooving anything to the world. You are an amazing person. So honest and transparent. I am grateful for your content and that you are here, on YT.
You're so right Lia, decluttering is a journey not a final destination, it's a whole change of perspective about what we own, what we need and what we bring into our lives. Me and my partner have been on a decluttering journey for over 3 years now and have reduced our belongings by at least 80 percent, we feel as though we can't possibly find anything else we don't want or need but have managed to fill 3 more charity bags in as many weeks! I would love to become more minimal again as we are planning on moving next year and I value space and the freedom of less things over the clutter that the unnecessary things create in my life. After listening to you i now feel inspired to go through all my books again, as as much as I love reading, I feel more anxiety from the amount I own and the literal physical weight of them than any enjoyment I 9nce got from owning so many.
I’m doing the 30 day minimalism challenge right now, and I’m getting rid stuff that I would never get rid of before. Honestly it feels so good, I’m very far from a minimalist but I’m trying to live with less.
That sounds great! As long as it feels good it will only be beneficial in the long run. And no matter how long ut takes or if you are ever going to be a minimalist, decluttering things we don't need is so freeing!
I agree - letting "stuff" go creates freedom, especially the freedom to move from one home to another, but also more financial freedom, and having less "stuff" frees up time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Lia!
Thank you for saying it's not the stuff that makes us successful. as a single mom, I feel that people are like oh if you don't have this and that then you're not providing for your kids 👀👀👀👀. A ton of toys and the latest electronics is not essential 🤷.
Kids are always going to want the latest and greatest things to be like their friends or kids of parents who buy the latest and greatest things are never going to understand why their friends don't have it. Good parenting is letting your children know that you are there for them everyday in all the crazy ups and downs and stuff can never provide that. I had a child not mine say the other day the number of paper products you have in your home is what constitutes you as a rich person because you have very expensive items that you use one time and throw away. She is eight because her parents refuse to buy paper towels and napkins when they can use washcloths and towels that can be rewashed, the little girl statement to me was very eye-opening and interesting
I can remember CLEARLY as if it were yesterday when I got toys that I DESPERATELY wanted as a child. Often when I unwrapped it it wasn’t as great as it was being sold on tv and I couldn’t understand why I wanted it in the first place. I won’t be buying my future kids any toys
I have decluttered a lot this year but would not call myself a minimalist! My question is, if you have so few possessions, no crafts, TV or books, how do you fill your time? I am retired and unable to garden, bike, etc. this time of year. Thanks. I have learned so much from your videos!!
I agree with you and gifts. I was given an Instant Pot. My family does not eat that much! I do not like using large appliances. It pains my mother to see it in the give away pile. But, I’ve had it for a year and I just don’t need it or want it.
Even before minimalism was a thing I thought the ideal way to move house would be with one pickup truck load of stuff. I've been thinking lately of a move across the country when I retire. Even that now a whole truck load of stuff seems extreme. While I don't think I could move with just one backpack I do know when I'm ready to move it's not going to be unmanageable, at least from a belongings standpoint. Pets, on the other hand, are a different story :)
This year I started decluttering and I found I have to do it in stages. My first step was just getting rid of stuff I didn't want or use and then I moved to if it doesn't have a place then I don't need or I need to get rid of something else to make space for the item. Everytime I clear more stuff out of my house it is refreshing and freeing. Thank you for your inspiration.
I feel knowledge and experiences far outweigh things. Apart from what one uses or wears on a regular basis. Only keep things I use and enjoy. This was a great video Lia. Straight to the point. Kind greetings.
Yes, I know what you mean. My boyfriend is somewhat minimalist but we definitely have to find compromises because we would not make the same decisions...
Second hand store in my town receives (as donation) and sells pieces of fabric, I brought mine unused but new leftovers there. Also we have repair café (public space with tools to repair things), I brought some needles / fabric / buttons etc to them
But I can say that I had another round of decluttering recently, and that was really energy-wasteful process, literally in the sense of physical effort! I had to research who or what organisation will take my stuff, bring these different things to different places, communicate with people on marketplace and meet with them, scan old albums, ride a bike to bring things like old nail polish to the sorting station the opposite side of the town, because only that one takes dangerous wastes... ugh
I am overwhelmed with clutter so I am aiming to do a declutter in the new year. Then I think I will do small areas each time. I get anxiety from so much stuff now.
It took me weeks to work up the courage to start but honestly id say start with your closet and let that easy care and decisions settle in and that helps catapult you going from room to room. Ive even made multiple passes over the same room over the course of months but starting is the hardest part. Once you do and you start to love the extra room and easy of cleaning then you start looking at everything differently trying to find more to get rid of lol. So good luck I believe in you!

I can somehow relate with your mindset as a Christian, so far as I'm trying to not be addicted to collecting of material possessions, or not to treat my possessions as the only things which defines my personality (idols). However, focusing on having as little possessions as possible, while still living in a comfortable flat with furniture, borrowing stuff from other people, and having regular access to the public services, is just dishonest and a waste of opportunities. If I ever decided to leave my valuable possessions that I've inherited, collected, or made so far, I would do it either for a traveller-lifestyle, or a survival-lifestyle in the wilderness, otherwise one could as well be leaving your lifestyle in a prison-cell/gulag, what is rather sad.
I also think, if I can get rid of 1000 things (that I use maybe) I can probably get rid of a furniture aswell, because I have less now. So I don't have to clean all of it, what safes me so much cleaner and time, that it is definitely cheaper to repurchase one book or the pencils that I do miss in the future.
Yes, I decluttered most of them. But I digitized the important ones and even kept a few physical ones that I really like. You can see them in a recent video called "decluttering everything I own". I suggest with things like that to think about it enough and move slowly since you can not get these items back if you regretted it. But I have decluttered soo many physical sentimental items now and haven't regretted anything so far. ☺
Yes me too! And I think this happens often but I also have to say that I somehow understand if you have so much stuff and just can't see yourself carefully sorting through everything and making sure it ends up with someone who wants it. But the real problem is accumulating so much in the first place if it wasn't so overwhelming it would be easier to declutter more carefully and sustainably 😕
@@ecofriendlia i have been decluttering for at least 2 years now.. i try to sell the item first, the drop my price if it doesn't sell to still try and sell it , then put it on a free group, then if still no one wants it i donate it. it does take more time but at least i try lol

@@ecofriendlia thank you, I have watched the video that you mentioned, it helps a lot , thanks and have a wonderful day😘
I know exactly what you mean!
What camera are you using? Hahah
Tip # 20 for saving your money, buy things when they come on sale.
And make a list through out the year so you actually buy stuff (on sale) you need!
@@Loeviis Good comment
I am not really into numbers, but I like having less stuff in my space. I want what I enjoy and need and that is not a lot of stuff.
Wahre worte ! Thanks.
Ich mach weiter es ist noch immer zu viel da.
Pls count your things
I own pens and notebooks i love writing thats all i own
i really wish people would not equate "decluttering" with "garbage" and just throwing stuff out... i see people do it all the time
I don't think we should call it decluttering, no its just called getting rid of it for one reason or another.
