Wow, I feel bad that I really don't remember much from this game. I love the Monkey Island games and bought Return day one, but all I did while watching your video was, "I don't remember that." I'll have to play it again. Though of all the MI games, Tales is the least I remember... except the goatee. Great video.

I was a bit wary of this project because of Ron Gilbert's past comments about the Guybrush/Elaine relationship and his tendency to screw up endings (at least in my opinion, it took me years to get into Monkey Island 3 because I hated the ending of MI2 so much), but luckily the game was just solid fun.
Lucas and Sierra games (and Monkey Island 1 in particular) meant so much to me when I was young that playing through this ended up being a pretty emotional experience.

Great review 👍 All I needed for this game, was my childhood friends from the early 90's, solving the puzzles together of the originals.

    I totally agree with you!
At first I thought that the artstyle was a bit abstract for my taste, but I trust Ron and Dave to make a great game because I know their works over the years and I loved every game they worked on that I have played, including Thimbleweed Park™, which for me was the proof Ron still has it after all those years.
However, I grew to really like the artstyle. It looks charming, especially when you walk around and talk to the characters and I am happy to see the game has it's own identity and 10 or 20 years from now I wouldn't play it only with nostalgia for the previous Monkey Island games it reminds me about but of this game itself, for how it looks and play and the refreshing new story it gave me.
I was worried for how could they manage to finally show us the secret, after all those years of speculations, but they handled it perfectly.
This game is a must for any fun of the series and even to people that never played a Monkey Island game!

In the process of playing through it now. I was expecting to dislike the art style, I wasn't however, expecting to find the tasks unrewarding and samey...Many of the puzzles feel overly simplified (even on hard mode) or just downright boring. The game is so incredibly self-aware that it's hard to swallow at times. I love the voice acting it's spot on but everything else just feels off. EDIT: that being said I am glad people are able to enjoy Monkey Island games again after such a long time

The visuals are nice. I like that most of the games went for different styles. Most people seem to want MI3's to come back, at least that's been the claim since the MI4 days. But people didn't express it as strangely as they did back then. If anything, my complaint with the new game is just that some of the characters seem lobotomized, but I think overall there's more pluses than minuses.

I wasn't intending to both with this game, but your video has changed my mind. I played and loved the first Monkey Island but never played any of the others, and I just didn't think another entry in the series would appeal to me, Gilbert or not. But based on your video, the returning locations and characters, looking just how I remember them (aside from the art stye), might make this feel more familiar to me than I expected. Interest increased.

Thank you for a well-thought-out and warm review, Pam. I can see how good the game made you feel.
How much do you want me to play this game? If I am a long time fan who didn't like the changes, was I too quick to dismiss the good things the changes allowed? You touched on it but dismissed more than advocated. If I am not familiar with Monkey Island, what kind of humor could I look forward to? Even if your other Monkey Island videos talk about it, wet my appetite a little. These are just little things I hope will help you find more joy in writing your reviews. Share your "Hey! That's neat!" and "Haha!" moments with us.
Ultimately, though, I think you have done what you could and done well. You can't single handedly make this game more popular. Gaming Bolt, which has 1.19M subscribers, has 12K views on its review. GameSpot, with 5.12M subscribers, has 25K views on its review. This was a numbers game few could win. Don't let it get you down.

The music and sound is the best ever, the artwork: scenery = perfect, some of the old characters e.g. Stan, Otis = perfect, Guybrush = does not look and feel like Guybrush - same for Carla, voice and character of Elaine = it's not her anymore - she is way too nice and cute. For me that's the only downside but I get over it and still love the game!

Hey Pam! Do you have any plans to make more videos like your "The Dig" one (where you do a bit of a doc about the game but also give a full summary of the story/playthrough)? They're super informative for people like me who always ogled those games from afar via reviews in PC magazines but either couldn't run them or didn't quite have access to them or just plain didn't know how to play them because I was too young and as such they were so mysterious and esoteric, being so different from the console games I was used to. Graphic adventures are like my biggest gaming blindspot because of that and those sort of videos are super valuable to me.
I know it's a lot of work and everything but hopefully we get more of those soon.
Thanks and have a nice day!

For how mixed the reaction was to the art style, I was pleasantly surprised by it. I think it looks great. Although I feel like anyone who was upset at the style, and made it a sticking point to playing the game was kind of missing the point and strength of the series anyway. It's always been in the characters and puzzles, in my opinion.

I really did enjoy the first part of the game on Melee island and Lechucks ship, but i felt it was lacking from then on. Soundtrack was 10/10. My biggest issue with the game is how boring the other islands are to discover apart from Melee island. In Curse of Monkey island and Lechucks Revenge you would go to these different islands with all these interesting towns and stores to walk into and interact with characters, yet in this game the locations on the other islands felt so empty! Some locations had only 1 or 2 things to click on and had no use other than to solve 1 puzzle. Although i think the art style was the strongest part of the game, i mean it dominated the whole game , for example the map of Terror Island, crazy cool art, i did find the box-y art combined with the stripped back interaction and more simple gameplay made it feel like a childs game. I was almost expecting to click on an object and have it say ''A is for apple, B is for banana'' I'm not sure what to make of the game, im sure it will give some young kid major nostalgia 20 years from now, but for me it doesn't quite have the glory that the original 3 had.

FWIW, I would have liked to see it do something visually that utilizes both modern 3D rendering, and pixel/sprite based imagery. Analogous to what Octopath Traveller did with the SNES JRPG style....But obviously not the same; Monkey Island wouldn't benefit from that exact stylistic direction, IMO. Taking some inspiration from Grim Fandango wouldn't hurt, either.

I think their goal here was extreme low budget, and hopefully cash in on nostalgia. The voice acting is what cost them the most, the game itself is no different than a free flash game.
Pixel art requires more work from artists, where as misshapen, abstract vectors is easier to animate, and well, much easier to just breeze through slapping together the entire game.
If this had more of the look and quality of Thimbleweed Park's graphics, and world design, it would have been a definite buy for me.

Anyways, you have a good one stranger! I hope you don't attack me with ill intentions or words. And if you do I guess I was right about the world and at least death is a universal thing and I'm not the only one to share in that dreaded moment.

The "entitled fans", (AKA long time customers), weren't demanding pixel art for the game. They were pointing out that the steep change in artstyle, was not to their liking. It does look like some cheap, very basic, cartoon-network 101 thing.

I don't think it's fair to call fans of the look and feel of old games to be entitled. Name calling never wins any argument, just creates more separation and hate. That said, I do think that new art direction is charming and it looks much better when seen in motion. Regardless of anyone's opinion, I'm glad we got another Monkey Island game.

Well, time to join the table of art whiners. It looks ghastly and lacks creativity. I'm not saying they should have used pixel art, as much as I love it. But any other art style would have been better than this.
In any case, it's good to see another Monkey Island game make an appearance.
Also, apparently you can get an alternet ending by drowning Guybrush and running out the timer.

I think this style is very creative, a new spin on old places and characters. I wondered about drowning him like you could do in the first game.

I've just finished playing it and would rate it as just above average. I still think the art work is terrible (but you get used to it fast), and I found myself getting bored, especially with all the back tracking but there were some genuinely fantastic parts and the humour is spot on. I'd rank this below the first 3 games but above Escape and Tales.

I found the backtracking in this less tedious than in MI2 because of how fast and easy travel was.
