Longtime member of the P99 community. The problem with it, is that P99 launched in 2009. It's a 15 year old server. Classic EQ, Kunark, and Velious in total lasted 2 years on live. Now "Project 1999" has been around 13 years longer than what it's emulating.
What (if any) changes do you think would be in the right direction for P99? Another fresh server? Start developing the content slowly towards additional expansions? Or maybe even start taking polls with the long time P99 members like yourself and maybe take classic EQ in a fresh direction on an alternative server but all with keeping classic EQ at the forefront?
@@RekitRogue We had a P99 Hardcore league running for a long time that was very successful. We accomplished that with ZERO help from the P99 devs/mods. I think seasonal "leagues", similar to Diablo or Path of exile on a fresh server could make the game a lot of fun. Similar to how "live" is running their time-locked progression servers. At the end of a season, fold the characters into a legacy server.
The game is divided up now sure.....but it needs to be. In the same light that taking players from live and going to P99 has, the same can be said for those who would never go back to live, doing JUST that because they were tooling around on P99 and said, "ya know what, im gonna check out live again cause its been awhile" Its a way to keep the player base interested so they may bounce back instead of just forgeting about it as a whole. Smartest move ive ever seen a conpany make.
Love the videos Rekit. Coincidentally, I had just finished watching one of your videos about your Quarm journey when I decided to log in and immediately saw Tevin in Sro within my field of vision. It was pretty surreal. I struck up a convo with him about your videos and his involvement, EQ journey, etc. He is definitely a stand up guy for sure. Hope to see more Quarm videos! Awesome video. You have some talent. I play on Project Lazarus, which some call easy mode. I just don't have a lot of time. I can still enjoy most of the older game with being allowed to 6-box to play it like a RTS. The people are wonderful and fun. I also get to clown around in zones I never got to enjoy. Its fun to play it my way.
EverQuest by nature is a big time investment, and if you only have time to "smash" EQ RTS, I say go crazy brother! It's probably also really cool to explore the darker places of Norrath that you normally can't on live or the emulator servers. And thank you for the encouragement! 🍻

I just played on Project Quarm yesterday for the first time after finding your videos about playing a shaman the last week. I streamed it and had a great time with my chat choosing the class and race that I played. Everyone I encountered was super nice and they were very helpful. Even had a person save me out of nowhere which never happens for me. I usually play Project 1999 with my wife and my friends. But Project Quarm so far has been a wonderful experience. I hope to play some more this Friday. Keep up the awesome videos!
You spoke a little about that fresh realm effect. This, IMO, in any MMO, its the best experience a player can have. Being in that fresh wave of lvling and doing end game content is Best in Slot. RMTers got their new service server Teek. Boxers will have their new in Jan with Takp. Purists got their p99. QoL Seekers got PQ. I mean, if you are an Eq enjoyers, these days are awsome.
For me, PoP/Lost Dungeons was peak EQ, because it's when I was in college and I no lifed the game. I'm considering trying Quarm and this video might convince me to give it a try. I recently jumped back into Live on my Silver account, and it's incredible how much it has changed.

I love P99 and have been playing on it since around 2013. It’s probably the only game I can play and actually feel a sense of joy/peace. It’s hard to explain, but if you know, you know. I don’t play much anymore, time and family keep me away, but occasionally I think about jumping back on to enjoy myself.

I have leveled to 60 on p99, including many, many hours spent grinding for plat at Seafury Isle; (F U spectre pet, ) or days upon days for the supposed staff that Xalgoz was rumored to drop ( Breaking news: i never got it). I have also played on tlp servers, so I can say I have played 2 of the 3 being spoken about here. The accelerated release of expansions on the tlp's make it almost impossible to not go down the rabbit hole of contemplating to open that wallet. I also would have not done this had I NOT had the previous knowledge I had about the game. Nothing better than a toon in full BIS gear and not knowing how to play your game at all. I have sat and sat and rationalized and thought about this so many times. In the end I told myself I'm playing a 20 year old game that I truly love, with folks that i have connections with beyond Norrath, so I should be easy on myself as how to I play the game. In the end I acquiesced and I have not a single regret. Everquest will always be my first true MMO love. Thank you for sharing!

TLP Servers are a LOT of fun the first couple months they release, as everyone is fresh and the server is full. By the time Kunark releases the gate keepers and boxers are built up and running the server. Haven't tried Quarm yet but enjoyed other private servers so far. Maybe I'll give it a go.
I'm in my mid 40s and I just can't stomach the low level grind of EQ classic servers anymore. That's the #1 reason I don't play them anymore. I hate the weirdness on Live, but it saves me so much time to not worry about groups and getting from A to B. The QoL just makes life easier there. I spend more time seeing and doing the content I want to do.
p99 hits is fantastic but it makes me sad that they either A dont make a new server for missed legacy content or B hold sleeper's events or legacy item events so people are more encouraged to play on an older progression without feeling like they missed out

First time I fired up Everquest was in September of 1998. My beta cd had just come in the mail and now it was time to...download a patch for about 8 hours on dialup. Started a half elf ranger in Qeynos Hills because I wanted to play a ranged class like my rogue in Diablo. No guides, no forums, just that classic UI in 640x480 running on a Voodoo 2 graphics card. Couldn't even talk about it because I had to sign a NDA(and mail it back) before they would mail the cd.
I started winter (?) of '99, Dark Elf Necro. It may have been later. I just know it was close to launch, but there were still people running around with Oracle robes What a magical, addictive game 😂 I had a Voodoo 3 2000 card, I think. Saved all my monies to get it
@@jazeenharal6013 Yeah the drop rate nerf was one of the big game-defining changes early on. Having track as a class skill was huge for me in the foggy, dark, rainy zones that were easy to get lost in. I would use the guards, merchants and named NPCs as waypoints to get back to town.

I ended up playing on Tormax. The population is low, but that also means PLers don't bother as they would rather go to Teek. You are the second youtuber that has mentioned getting bullied out of camping spots on Teek.
2:30 done So I have a friend, much like you, that plays. He tried to drag me in and I ran. I myself am an older nerd (so my IQ may in fact not be higher than my age) and played a lot of WOW. I never had a lot of confidence so didn't raid, initially, just barely dungeoned and stayed out in the open world. Recent times have changed and I actually got tired playing SOD (I am assuming you know my acronyms, let me know if you need clarification). I decided to give EQ a try. Like a real attempt this time. I am currently on Teek TLP. (oh listening as I type this. think I have seen some of dessius' content but not sure i subscribed, heading there now). anyway, I am enjoying my time MUCH more than I expected I would. Hell I am trying spell research on my 17 mage and I hear that that is rare given how "difficult" it is. Anyway, I am just here rambling about to log in. I don't think I got into EQ early enough to have the same sort of attachment to the "classic" EQ that P99 is providing. I started on the live servers right at the end of luclin and I rolled a space kitty shaman that for some reason, some people have a real aversion to, something, something, more than 5 polygons, something something. I tried a TLP server, Mangler, and it certainly hit some of the nostalgia buttons, but the sheer amount of both sanctioned and black-market RMT that infested those servers drove me away and hardened my resolve to never go near a TLP server again. P99 was a good introduction to the EQ that happened before my time, but I liked my edges to be a bit polished, P99s EQ has far too many rough edges and jank, even if others find it endearing, I'm not fond of having to sit in the EC tunnel to buy/sell, maps are useful, mounts are a must for me, AA's actually gave a character something to work for post level cap and I like characters that don't look like they are made out of knock off lego with their 10 polygons, sue me. I have yet to try Quarm, but your more recent videos have certainly piqued my interest.
Thank you for sharing brother! I can understand your aversion to the low poly characters of yore. My son plays and he prefers the newer models. I am sorry that a lot of your journey in EQ has been plagued with bullshit and you are kinda in that "middle ground" when it comes to an EQ home. If you do decide to try Project Quarm, with the zeal program, there are maps, you can use the updated character models in the options setting before logging into the actual game. I try to go on Live once and awhile, I recovered my old account last year and jumped on a few TLP servers, but I just keep hitting a wall on it. Same with p99. I was excited when Green finally launched there but again, I hit a wall. Quarm I enjoy immensely. I keep jumping on once and awhile, but with recent events in my life I just haven't been able to really play, but I'm excited more for Quarm because they will get to Luclin/PoP which is when I started my EQ journey back in '02. I've almost joined Former Glory as well a few times, so if I'll make sure to do a /wave if I see ya out there Destan!

P99 has multiple UI options you can use that show numbers and idk what you mean by camera. I like 3rd person also and it seems fine. Can toggle camera angles f9
@@kaledreams601 F9 camera is not the same as a free camera, where I can rotate the angles around 360, I am also aware that p99 is sanctioned by daybreak, I have no clue concerning Quarm (not my department). Buuut Quarm is still pretty fun as is P99. 🍻
I'll be honest, your videos got me to roll a barbarian shaman alt on Quarm (where i already have 4 characters). I've never played a barbarian or a shaman so this has been an interesting time. He's only level 8 and planning on heading to the EC tunnel to sell his HQ bear skins once he reaches level 9. I like that i can just log in and play on him instead of spending time summoning everything and medding back up to 100 like i do on my mage.
I played p99 red for a few years (launch until 2015 or so). Sometimes the population was 15~ at peak at this time when it almost died. Got a GM kicked out for giving my character a super clicky (lol sorry secrets - got away with it for 2 years though). Hope everyone around made a bundle on bitcoin like I did! Akim/Wyrm/Moses/others
btw, Daybreak doesn't offer the old, original EverQuest to play, so they can't "banhammer" them. That's why Blizzard threw up classic WoW, there's a video game museum law that threatened them. If the game isn't offered anymore, they lose some rights to it.
I played 6 TLP's and now that Quarm fixed their camera smoothness...I can say with 1000% certainty I wont ever play another TLP again. pay 15 monthly to deal with cheaters botters and boxers. No I don't think so. Free EQ is the best with QUarm.
Come on!! You know Mage is your favorite class, stop denying it!! lol. I haven't had any problems with high levels on Teek, all the Teek high levels I've been running into have been very helpful. Even the Mages. Mage comes by and buffs everyone with their high end damage shield. I've stopped playing EQ for a bit, some of my friends were playing cata classic wow and I've made a Holy Paladin on their server. I've also been playing the new war within storyline to check it out, I still have eq quarm with my cleric that I will play from time to time, but soo many games are showing up in the next month that I want to try out when they are released.

EQ and EQ2 were freaking amazing games! Started EQ the beginning of 2000 and EQ2 when it came out...they were epic basically until Sony sold it all out and dumbed them down. Miss those days...
I play on both Quarm and Live and I love both experiences, there you have it, I love EQ. Just one thing, yes there is always a power creep when a game has to stay alive, but believe me there is nothing easy about dying in 3 seconds to a lvl 125 kicking you're butt before you can react 😅👍 ❤️. There are always morons and a holes playing and they are on every version. I prefer the non progression, it's stir crazy 🤪, even compared to "normal" live, but it's all versions of EQ and it's the best MMO still. It's 25 years old and has 80 to 100k active subs, which is about 20 to 25 % of peak EQ. There will probably be a EQ3 coming out soon, and we will probably argue erm I mean discuss about it as well 😅👍 ❤️. Heck I have great friends on Quarm and Live, when I first started on live I got several hundred K Plat for spells when I joined Chamber of Chaos, I never asked for it, but there you have the EQ sprit well and alive (Fezz is also a very good EQ streamer, should check him out). A few months back I payed Fezz the money back and thanked him for the loan, let it help another player coming to play EQ with what I still call my friends, even though I have moved onto another guild. /EQ Rant off 😊

I wanted to play EQ2. I got to about level 15. Was having fun. Ran out of inventory space. Got tired of never having inventory space. I even stopped gathering when I reached tier 2 materials, because I was running out of inventory space. So I stopped playing, because I didn't have enough inventory space.
I used to play when EQ first came out in 99'. Played till 2010. Just started playing again about 45 dys, playing on a DB Standard server. I love the time i played in 99'-10' and i like this EQ i play now. But would like to play on a server that's reminiscence of that period [99'-10']. I love the Necro so soloing is not an issue but like the grouping as well. Any suggestions ??? Also tbh i find the different server's confusing when looking for class guides. Theres alot of guides for P99,Progression,and TLP but not sure if any can/could be applied to a DB server?
@@Pariah59 if you are looking to join classic EQ either P99 or Quarm will scratch the nostalgia itch. As for builds and guides Most seem pretty viable regardless of server as long as they match the era or expansions. So if you're on a TLP like Teek just check what expansion they are up too for relevant guides per era or hit up the P99 wiki and follow a more classic path to power. Quarm = no F9 required, I have 100% camera control at all times via only the mouse, pan, scroll, rotate, center above, below, beside and all the 360 camera at my finger-tips.
I just started playing EQ some 3 weeks ago on Live, and it's been an interesting journey so far. The game require you to have patience for sure, as the game has a certain amount of jank to both its gameplay and game engine, but it has been fun so far.
@@RekitRogue Thanks man. I got in to MMOs in late 1999 or early 2000, I started playing the other MMO that launched in 1999, a game Called Asheron's Call, and it was my MMO home for many years. I have played a few other games over the years, the big one being World of Warcraft, but playing EverQuest made me realize that I missed playing a game with no region locked servers. I'm from Europe, and it's such a joy to met and play with people from all over the world. I used to be very tribal about the MMOs I played "dude why are playing that game, it sucks, my game is sooo much better" nonsense like that, but as I have grown older, I can see how silly that was. You can play and like multiple MMOs at the same time, and this goes back to what you talk about in your video, what ever the version you play of EverQuest, it's fine, the main goal is to have fun while we play our video games after all. One thing that I've learned, over many years of playing many different MMOs, is the fact an MMO is only as good as the people you play with.
Daybreak had a publicly announced handshake with project1999 allowing them to exist. AKA - they've created legal precedent to allow eqemu to exist. In any copyright infringement law on intellectual property like this, the onus is on the IP owner to prove that the copied material negatively affected sales by stealing income. In this case, it would be plainly obvious that the opposite is true - eqemu (and its derivative servers) is one of the only things keeping eqlive on the map.
it's a shame the client runs so poorly these days. I've tinkered a lot, and I just can't get it to run properly. Yesterday I repeatedly had an issue where the video just froze. I could still hear myself walking and sitting down, I could blindly do a /camp desktop (game crashed though) but there was no way to recover the game. Also, 0% Gamma is rough.
@@quineloe I'm sorry to hear that man, I've had the occasional lag spike but nothing like what you're describing. It's hard to stay invested in a game of its struggling to run. Hopefully you'll find some adventure soon man.
I want to give Quarm a try but my cpu seems to have a conniption whenever I try to get the files. Hence why I mostly stay on P99. I try to play retail EQ from time to time but the character models look gross for dwarves
that's all well and good but i expected to hear something about actual live EQ. you know song of laurion or whatever the fuck it is. I am a new player and decided to play live instead of p99 or any other classic because I don't know shit about the game. So far I've enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Correct me if I am wrong but even if we take the QoL changes away as well as the lack of social interaction because the current level is like 120 or something like that , isn't the core gameplay of everquest unchanged from the classic era? Kill a million mobs , level up , raid.
@@GMetzo If all you want out of EQ is kill, level up, and raid then yes "all" versions of EQ can scratch that itch. Is that the "core gameplay" of EverQuest? I would say, that depends on how you view what gameplay features are fun. EQ in it's origins is a community based game, and yes that "can" exist in live EQ. But, it is more present in the classic versions, where classes and characters need to group and join guild to achieve things that can be easily soloed in Live EQ. As a new player if you are enjoying the gameplay loops and trials of live then go nuts brother, don't let me or anyone tell you the right way to EverQuest. I suppose I spoke less on the live servers because I don't know a whole lot about the latest and greatest expansions and whatever new shiny BS the game has on offer. MMOs are not a rat race to me as a player, They are a journey. You may view them differently and that is okay, if the dopamine of speed leveling and the grind of racing to endgame is your thing, take that joy and run with it. The classic versions of EQ offer different challenges and difficulties than live, but in the end man, play what's fun. And finally Welcome to Norrath friend, here we are all EverQuesters, I hope your adventures are badass.
I think the only thing I've disliked about trying a TLP is that you run in to what feels like a tremendous amount of douchebags , Maybe it's rose colored glasses but I fondly remember a server of people with some level of manners. People just bombing 6 toons into your camp , posting up and basically going "its ours now bitch" is not something I'd have ever expected in EQ. Sure sure I know the internet and douchebags go hand in hand, but I just don't recall it to this degree. That said, it's been a really fun experience (again) ......

Nah. People have changed. It used to be a nice player base of helpful people. After Covid and all this political bs, people have turned to the dark side. I camped storm feather for 3 days to get my SK a clicky haste eye patch of plunder. I didn't know that haste pots were available on the TLP yet. So when I got excited and shared it in general, I quickly realized how bad people have gotten. I was told I'm the dumbest fin idiot they've ever met. I had multiple tells of people just cursing me out and calling me stupid. It was like a bomb of hatred. I've never experienced anything like it in EQ. One person was like GRATS. I just don't see how people can be that full of hate because I completed a quest. These people need to get a life

I'm curious what you mean by "modern MMOs". Games that are currently running? Games made this decade? Is WOW modern, even though it's two decades old? New World?
Good question, I think that "current" MMO's or most "up to date" mmo's usually have a "Modern" version of the game, Warcraft is a good example of this, they have a classic version but also a "Retail" or up to date version of the game. They are very different experiences. The same could be said for Runescape vs Old school Runescape. Old school runescape, and Classic WoW are typically less predatory than their "Modern" or "Retail" versions. As for games that are coming out, or recently released such as Diablo 4 or in your suggestion New World, yes, they very much fall into the Modern mmo in my opinion. I suppose it is just a "buzz word" I use when describing a game or expansion of the game that has a current version or is regularly updated to try and remain relevant in the MMO space.

I can't support a server that has Plane of Knowledge and those ridiculous bookstands around the game world that give instant free travel. Also very much dislike the outdoor zone designs and mounts of Luclin. There are a ton of ways to improve the base game of Everquest, and those expansions are not it. Keeping the world of Norrath and its danger in focus is key, while adding features that create more unpredictability and class refinement.
@@Zuranthium I'm not super familiar with Luclin so that will all feel newish to me when it arrives on Quarm. But I definitely agree with the game going "softer" as the expansions rolled out. I am also a fan of character refinement and class progression that adds depth to a class and their role in both solo and group play so we agree there as well. I also wish they would have refined and deepened the trade skills a bit more, adding new and interesting ways to tackle Norrath.
I loved EQ before Sony took it, I don't need to elaborate on that... you know. That said I think the crafting of EQ2 was, until they succumbed to whinging bitches and FFXIV came along. Gathering was shit, but the actual crafting was incredible. I still have folders full of EQAtlas maps and EQrecipes long after I stopped playing but one thing I will give Sony.... the player housing system they bought in, at least in regards to storage and design freedom is the best in any MMO ever. Camp Check! Guess I'm doing something else for a while. Loved it. Respected queues for raids and rare spawns. Things we'll never see again along with the community spending an evening in line for an oven and everyone losing their minds over a bear sandwich and loving every second of it.
@@montymousester I haven't played a whole lot of EQ2, but your assessment sounds on point. You still play EQ on any capacity? Or has that EQ ship sailed for you?
Also, I can’t get Quarm to run well. Whenever I turn left or right to look around, the screen is all jittery and choppy. Just can’t seem to figure it out, so it is unplayable to me as well. Kind of a shame, I wish I could check it out, but I’ve looked up countless fixes and nothing seems to fix it at all.

@@MikeStivicATS I never got around to the old school EQ pvp, but I know there are some really great people out there that loved it! It is discouraging that it was left to the wayside or "softened" as time went on. (I don't really know what all happened to pvp, but a few friends have mentioned it's death from the days of yore.)

There was nothing better for either scouting out a mark, or protecting oneself while farming then scanning constantly 360.. This was a well done video, made me very nostalgic.. I remember killing the people farming ice giants.. It's a shame that this massive game is so split across various versions. Furthermore, I think that each version has problems. Old school Everquest is fine and dandy until you start to understand that the game hates solo play and that it's played by the same people that played it back in the day, farming the most valuable camps and bosses most efficiently with their groups and guilds. You can either join them or forget about it. The live version of the game simply doesn't feel like Everquest, it has a large feature creep and countless zones were made obsolete by introduction of new quest chains. I tried to ignore all that and went to the old zones to relax and grind and it can work, but the monetization is the problem. If you want to really play the game, you have to pay both for expansions and subscription and given how much time the game wants from you to progress, it would soon become like a second job that you pay to work. It's a shame, really. Not a single MMORPG on the market has that high fantasy pulp aesthetic as Everquest does, but the game feels like it doesn't want to be played. If only someone made an emulator with all the modern expansions, but removing the quests and leaving just the grind, now that would be awesome :D
No, you don't have to buy the expansions for the live server unless you PLAN to get to the high end. Sounds like you just wanted to go check it out, at that point you just have to pay the sub fee to enjoy the game as if you own it. Taking away the quests in the game and leaving only the grind would create dead servers upon launch. You don't HAVE to do the quests....any of them. Your way to play IS there and intact, play the game without doing the quests. You're the only person I've ever heard suggesting to remove the quests and I'm sure that you would be 1 of 10 total people that would play on a server like that.....making it DoA.

Yes, I know it would take months to level a character that way, but I think that would be more in the spirit of vanilla. But, to each his own. People are enjoying how live currently is and I don't have anything against it :)
I'm confused about your comment on the camera on p99. If there's only one thing on p99 that's unequivocally better than PQ it's the client. The 3rd person camera, mouse wheel zoom, tab target and everything zeal attempts to fix on PQ works absolutely smooth and flawlessly on p99. I'm at a total loss of what you're referring to and I've played a lot on both servers.
Yes you can zoom out with the mouse on p99, but you can't rotate the camera around your character without the use of the F9 key, in Quarm I can just rotate around my characters by holding the left mouse button down and panning to either side.
@@RekitRogue Ah, on p99 the camera button we use is the title menu, default is shift-t I believe. I bind mine to t, it starts off with a view directly behind your character which is useful and allows you to rotate your camera around your character and zoom in and out pretty far.
@@RekitRogue No problem, it's something I originally learned from watching a twitch streamer. It's not intuitive using the title menu in that way, that's for sure.
i think the philosophy of quarm captures classic everquest, without the big headaches of classic everquest. like you still have that deep adventure feel, that danger, the requirement to make social bonds, how much your reputation matters. all of those things that made everquest great, minus ALOT of the ui things that made everquest suck ass. like i wanna be fighting dragons and monsters and surprise trains, and adventuring around, not wrestling with the UI. the horrible classic ui is one of the biggest barriers for anyone who hasn't played everquest before. hell even people like who played eq way back in 1999 and into 2002. getting back into eq i almost quit immediately because of the stupid ui. but then i found out you could use zeal on quarm and that changed everything for me. quarm is like driving a really really classic car, except you changed out the seats to something comfortable, and you modified the engine so you don't have to use leaded gas.

For me P99 is best but Quarm has it place. I have no issues with P99 camera. Quarm has a worse camera than P99 so no idea what you are talking about and loads of Ui options.
When have you last tried Quarm? Quarm HAD camera issues but if you have zeal you're good to go. I find Quarm much better than P99 in terms of user friendly. QOL is nice too and keeps its fresh feeling.
@@moforyguy6803 I have the zeal camera fix and I do still play on and off but the p99 ui and camera is superior. Takp they use is a hacked client and has all sorts of issues.
Quarm is a disaster. If you can't see the writing on the wall and continue to waste your time there then you only have yourself to blame when the inevitable happens.
Quarm doesn't face any other inevitable end that ANY announced server giving all the details about the entirety of its life progression. All of that information was released before the release of the server so that everyone could know what it was BEFORE making a character. That being said, the people who are there are extremely likely to WANT to be there for the whole ride. So what inevitable end are you suggesting......

"P99 is the closest things to classic EverQuest" is such an inaccurate statement these days. There is a plethora of things on that server are verifiably not accurate. In some regards it's completely correct, while in others it's WILDLY off base. In a lot of ways, TAKP and Quarm are more accurate to a classic era than P99 is these days.

Quarm went down the QoL toilet. free epics, free legacy, free, free, instant... etc. P99, even stuck in stale AF Velious for 12 years, still gets almost twice the players. that tells you all you need to know. (yes i know the numbers at login arent double but Quarm allows boxing of mules - and trust me - boxing in general lol). can tell you with certainty Quarm doesnt do anything about boxing, whereas P99 hunts down cheaters with a vengeance. P99 is too stubborn to move past Velious and that is the ONLY reason Quarm gets players. Otherwise, Quarm would be JUST LIKE THE OTHER QoL boxing Emu's... with 50-100 players.
You like P99, it is where you find comfort in a game that you love and that's okay. You have "you issues" with Quarm and it's not for you and that too is okay. I have "Me issues" with live EQ and prefer Quarm and you guessed it, that's okay as well. Take care man, and I hope your P99 adventures are fantastic. 🍻

Longtime member of the P99 community. The problem with it, is that P99 launched in 2009. It's a 15 year old server. Classic EQ, Kunark, and Velious in total lasted 2 years on live. Now "Project 1999" has been around 13 years longer than what it's emulating.
What (if any) changes do you think would be in the right direction for P99? Another fresh server? Start developing the content slowly towards additional expansions? Or maybe even start taking polls with the long time P99 members like yourself and maybe take classic EQ in a fresh direction on an alternative server but all with keeping classic EQ at the forefront?
@@RekitRogue We had a P99 Hardcore league running for a long time that was very successful. We accomplished that with ZERO help from the P99 devs/mods. I think seasonal "leagues", similar to Diablo or Path of exile on a fresh server could make the game a lot of fun. Similar to how "live" is running their time-locked progression servers. At the end of a season, fold the characters into a legacy server.
I never played EQ1, only EQ2, bc I started as a kid in EQ2. But for some reason I still like watching your videos and learning about what came first!

The game is divided up now sure.....but it needs to be. In the same light that taking players from live and going to P99 has, the same can be said for those who would never go back to live, doing JUST that because they were tooling around on P99 and said, "ya know what, im gonna check out live again cause its been awhile"
Its a way to keep the player base interested so they may bounce back instead of just forgeting about it as a whole. Smartest move ive ever seen a conpany make.

Awesome video. You have some talent. I play on Project Lazarus, which some call easy mode. I just don't have a lot of time. I can still enjoy most of the older game with being allowed to 6-box to play it like a RTS. The people are wonderful and fun. I also get to clown around in zones I never got to enjoy. Its fun to play it my way.
EverQuest by nature is a big time investment, and if you only have time to "smash" EQ RTS, I say go crazy brother! It's probably also really cool to explore the darker places of Norrath that you normally can't on live or the emulator servers. And thank you for the encouragement! 🍻

I just played on Project Quarm yesterday for the first time after finding your videos about playing a shaman the last week. I streamed it and had a great time with my chat choosing the class and race that I played. Everyone I encountered was super nice and they were very helpful. Even had a person save me out of nowhere which never happens for me. I usually play Project 1999 with my wife and my friends. But Project Quarm so far has been a wonderful experience. I hope to play some more this Friday. Keep up the awesome videos!

You spoke a little about that fresh realm effect. This, IMO, in any MMO, its the best experience a player can have. Being in that fresh wave of lvling and doing end game content is Best in Slot.

For me, PoP/Lost Dungeons was peak EQ, because it's when I was in college and I no lifed the game. I'm considering trying Quarm and this video might convince me to give it a try. I recently jumped back into Live on my Silver account, and it's incredible how much it has changed.

I love P99 and have been playing on it since around 2013. It’s probably the only game I can play and actually feel a sense of joy/peace. It’s hard to explain, but if you know, you know.
I don’t play much anymore, time and family keep me away, but occasionally I think about jumping back on to enjoy myself.

I have leveled to 60 on p99, including many, many hours spent grinding for plat at Seafury Isle; (F U spectre pet, ) or days upon days for the supposed staff that Xalgoz was rumored to drop ( Breaking news: i never got it). I have also played on tlp servers, so I can say I have played 2 of the 3 being spoken about here. The accelerated release of expansions on the tlp's make it almost impossible to not go down the rabbit hole of contemplating to open that wallet. I also would have not done this had I NOT had the previous knowledge I had about the game. Nothing better than a toon in full BIS gear and not knowing how to play your game at all. I have sat and sat and rationalized and thought about this so many times. In the end I told myself I'm playing a 20 year old game that I truly love, with folks that i have connections with beyond Norrath, so I should be easy on myself as how to I play the game. In the end I acquiesced and I have not a single regret. Everquest will always be my first true MMO love. Thank you for sharing!

TLP Servers are a LOT of fun the first couple months they release, as everyone is fresh and the server is full. By the time Kunark releases the gate keepers and boxers are built up and running the server.
Haven't tried Quarm yet but enjoyed other private servers so far. Maybe I'll give it a go.
Norrath will be a better place with you amongst its ranks!
I'm in my mid 40s and I just can't stomach the low level grind of EQ classic servers anymore. That's the #1 reason I don't play them anymore.
I hate the weirdness on Live, but it saves me so much time to not worry about groups and getting from A to B. The QoL just makes life easier there. I spend more time seeing and doing the content I want to do.

p99 hits is fantastic but it makes me sad that they either A dont make a new server for missed legacy content or B hold sleeper's events or legacy item events so people are more encouraged to play on an older progression without feeling like they missed out

First time I fired up Everquest was in September of 1998. My beta cd had just come in the mail and now it was time to...download a patch for about 8 hours on dialup. Started a half elf ranger in Qeynos Hills because I wanted to play a ranged class like my rogue in Diablo. No guides, no forums, just that classic UI in 640x480 running on a Voodoo 2 graphics card. Couldn't even talk about it because I had to sign a NDA(and mail it back) before they would mail the cd.
I started winter (?) of '99, Dark Elf Necro. It may have been later. I just know it was close to launch, but there were still people running around with Oracle robes

@@jazeenharal6013 Yeah the drop rate nerf was one of the big game-defining changes early on. Having track as a class skill was huge for me in the foggy, dark, rainy zones that were easy to get lost in. I would use the guards, merchants and named NPCs as waypoints to get back to town.

I ended up playing on Tormax. The population is low, but that also means PLers don't bother as they would rather go to Teek.

So I have a friend, much like you, that plays. He tried to drag me in and I ran. I myself am an older nerd (so my IQ may in fact not be higher than my age) and played a lot of WOW. I never had a lot of confidence so didn't raid, initially, just barely dungeoned and stayed out in the open world.
Recent times have changed and I actually got tired playing SOD (I am assuming you know my acronyms, let me know if you need clarification). I decided to give EQ a try. Like a real attempt this time. I am currently on Teek TLP. (oh listening as I type this. think I have seen some of dessius' content but not sure i subscribed, heading there now).
anyway, I am enjoying my time MUCH more than I expected I would. Hell I am trying spell research on my 17 mage and I hear that that is rare given how "difficult" it is.
Anyway, I am just here rambling about to log in. Just enjoying your vid and will watch for more!!!

I don't think I got into EQ early enough to have the same sort of attachment to the "classic" EQ that P99 is providing. I started on the live servers right at the end of luclin and I rolled a space kitty shaman that for some reason, some people have a real aversion to, something, something, more than 5 polygons, something something.
I tried a TLP server, Mangler, and it certainly hit some of the nostalgia buttons, but the sheer amount of both sanctioned and black-market RMT that infested those servers drove me away and hardened my resolve to never go near a TLP server again.
P99 was a good introduction to the EQ that happened before my time, but I liked my edges to be a bit polished, P99s EQ has far too many rough edges and jank, even if others find it endearing, I'm not fond of having to sit in the EC tunnel to buy/sell, maps are useful, mounts are a must for me, AA's actually gave a character something to work for post level cap and I like characters that don't look like they are made out of knock off lego with their 10 polygons, sue me.
I have yet to try Quarm, but your more recent videos have certainly piqued my interest.
Thank you for sharing brother! I can understand your aversion to the low poly characters of yore. My son plays and he prefers the newer models. I am sorry that a lot of your journey in EQ has been plagued with bullshit and you are kinda in that "middle ground" when it comes to an EQ home. If you do decide to try Project Quarm, with the zeal program, there are maps, you can use the updated character models in the options setting before logging into the actual game. Buuuut you can't be a space kitty, not yet at least. Finally, if you are ever on Norrath on Project Quarm, Feel free to send me a tell (Destan or Oswick) anytime. I try to go on Live once and awhile, I recovered my old account last year and jumped on a few TLP servers, but I just keep hitting a wall on it. Same with p99. I was excited when Green finally launched there but again, I hit a wall. Quarm I enjoy immensely. I keep jumping on once and awhile, but with recent events in my life I just haven't been able to really play, but I'm excited more for Quarm because they will get to Luclin/PoP which is when I started my EQ journey back in '02. I've almost joined Former Glory as well a few times, so if I'll make sure to do a /wave if I see ya out there Destan!

P99 has multiple UI options you can use that show numbers and idk what you mean by camera. I like 3rd person also and it seems fine. Can toggle camera angles f9

I'll be honest, your videos got me to roll a barbarian shaman alt on Quarm (where i already have 4 characters). I've never played a barbarian or a shaman so this has been an interesting time. He's only level 8 and planning on heading to the EC tunnel to sell his HQ bear skins once he reaches level 9. I like that i can just log in and play on him instead of spending time summoning everything and medding back up to 100 like i do on my mage.

I played p99 red for a few years (launch until 2015 or so). Sometimes the population was 15~ at peak at this time when it almost died.

btw, Daybreak doesn't offer the old, original EverQuest to play, so they can't "banhammer" them. That's why Blizzard threw up classic WoW, there's a video game museum law that threatened them. If the game isn't offered anymore, they lose some rights to it.

I played 6 TLP's and now that Quarm fixed their camera smoothness...I can say with 1000% certainty I wont ever play another TLP again. pay 15 monthly to deal with cheaters botters and boxers. No I don't think so. Free EQ is the best with QUarm.
Come on!! You know Mage is your favorite class, stop denying it!! lol. I haven't had any problems with high levels on Teek, all the Teek high levels I've been running into have been very helpful. Even the Mages. Mage comes by and buffs everyone with their high end damage shield. I've stopped playing EQ for a bit, some of my friends were playing cata classic wow and I've made a Holy Paladin on their server. I've also been playing the new war within storyline to check it out, I still have eq quarm with my cleric that I will play from time to time, but soo many games are showing up in the next month that I want to try out when they are released.

I play on both Quarm and Live and I love both experiences, there you have it, I love EQ.
Just one thing, yes there is always a power creep when a game has to stay alive, but believe me there is nothing easy about dying in 3 seconds to a lvl 125 kicking you're butt before you can react 😅👍 ❤️.
There are always morons and a holes playing and they are on every version.
I prefer the non progression, it's stir crazy 🤪, even compared to "normal" live, but it's all versions of EQ and it's the best MMO still.
It's 25 years old and has 80 to 100k active subs, which is about 20 to 25 % of peak EQ.
There will probably be a EQ3 coming out soon, and we will probably argue erm I mean discuss about it as well 😅👍 ❤️.
Heck I have great friends on Quarm and Live, when I first started on live I got several hundred K Plat for spells when I joined Chamber of Chaos, I never asked for it, but there you have the EQ sprit well and alive (Fezz is also a very good EQ streamer, should check him out).
A few months back I payed Fezz the money back and thanked him for the loan, let it help another player coming to play EQ with what I still call my friends, even though I have moved onto another guild.

I wanted to play EQ2. I got to about level 15. Was having fun. Ran out of inventory space. Got tired of never having inventory space. I even stopped gathering when I reached tier 2 materials, because I was running out of inventory space. So I stopped playing, because I didn't have enough inventory space.

@@Pariah59 if you are looking to join classic EQ either P99 or Quarm will scratch the nostalgia itch. As for builds and guides Most seem pretty viable regardless of server as long as they match the era or expansions. So if you're on a TLP like Teek just check what expansion they are up too for relevant guides per era or hit up the P99 wiki and follow a more classic path to power. The camera? What am I missing? You can mouse wheel scroll to 3rd person on p99, as well as hit f9 to change angles to rotate around. I'm confused
Quarm = no F9 required, I have 100% camera control at all times via only the mouse, pan, scroll, rotate, center above, below, beside and all the 360 camera at my finger-tips.
I just started playing EQ some 3 weeks ago on Live, and it's been an interesting journey so far. The game require you to have patience for sure, as the game has a certain amount of jank to both its gameplay and game engine, but it has been fun so far.

@@RekitRogue Thanks man. I got in to MMOs in late 1999 or early 2000, I started playing the other MMO that launched in 1999, a game Called Asheron's Call, and it was my MMO home for many years. I have played a few other games over the years, the big one being World of Warcraft, but playing EverQuest made me realize that I missed playing a game with no region locked servers. I'm from Europe, and it's such a joy to met and play with people from all over the world.
I used to be very tribal about the MMOs I played "dude why are playing that game, it sucks, my game is sooo much better" nonsense like that, but as I have grown older, I can see how silly that was. You can play and like multiple MMOs at the same time, and this goes back to what you talk about in your video, what ever the version you play of EverQuest, it's fine, the main goal is to have fun while we play our video games after all.
One thing that I've learned, over many years of playing many different MMOs, is the fact an MMO is only as good as the people you play with.

Daybreak had a publicly announced handshake with project1999 allowing them to exist. AKA - they've created legal precedent to allow eqemu to exist. In any copyright infringement law on intellectual property like this, the onus is on the IP owner to prove that the copied material negatively affected sales by stealing income. In this case, it would be plainly obvious that the opposite is true - eqemu (and its derivative servers) is one of the only things keeping eqlive on the map.

it's a shame the client runs so poorly these days. I've tinkered a lot, and I just can't get it to run properly. Yesterday I repeatedly had an issue where the video just froze. I could still hear myself walking and sitting down, I could blindly do a /camp desktop (game crashed though) but there was no way to recover the game.
Also, 0% Gamma is rough.

@@GMetzo If all you want out of EQ is kill, level up, and raid then yes "all" versions of EQ can scratch that itch. Is that the "core gameplay" of EverQuest? I would say, that depends on how you view what gameplay features are fun. EQ in it's origins is a community based game, and yes that "can" exist in live EQ. But, it is more present in the classic versions, where classes and characters need to group and join guild to achieve things that can be easily soloed in Live EQ. As a new player if you are enjoying the gameplay loops and trials of live then go nuts brother, don't let me or anyone tell you the right way to EverQuest. I suppose I spoke less on the live servers because I don't know a whole lot about the latest and greatest expansions and whatever new shiny BS the game has on offer. MMOs are not a rat race to me as a player, They are a journey. You may view them differently and that is okay, if the dopamine of speed leveling and the grind of racing to endgame is your thing, take that joy and run with it. The classic versions of EQ offer different challenges and difficulties than live, but in the end man, play what's fun. I think the only thing I've disliked about trying a TLP is that you run in to what feels like a tremendous amount of douchebags , Maybe it's rose colored glasses but I fondly remember a server of people with some level of manners. People just bombing 6 toons into your camp , posting up and basically going "its ours now bitch" is not something I'd have ever expected in EQ. Sure sure I know the internet and douchebags go hand in hand, but I just don't recall it to this degree. That said, it's been a really fun experience (again) ......

Nah. People have changed. It used to be a nice player base of helpful people. After Covid and all this political bs, people have turned to the dark side. I camped storm feather for 3 days to get my SK a clicky haste eye patch of plunder. I didn't know that haste pots were available on the TLP yet. So when I got excited and shared it in general, I quickly realized how bad people have gotten. I was told I'm the dumbest fin idiot they've ever met. I had multiple tells of people just cursing me out and calling me stupid. It was like a bomb of hatred. I've never experienced anything like it in EQ. One person was like GRATS. I just don't see how people can be that full of hate because I completed a quest. These people need to get a life

I'm curious what you mean by "modern MMOs". Games that are currently running? Games made this decade? Is WOW modern, even though it's two decades old? New World?
Good question, I think that "current" MMO's or most "up to date" mmo's usually have a "Modern" version of the game, Warcraft is a good example of this, they have a classic version but also a "Retail" or up to date version of the game. They are very different experiences. The same could be said for Runescape vs Old school Runescape. Old school runescape, and Classic WoW are typically less predatory than their "Modern" or "Retail" versions. As for games that are coming out, or recently released such as Diablo 4 or in your suggestion New World, yes, they very much fall into the Modern mmo in my opinion. I suppose it is just a "buzz word" I use when describing a game or expansion of the game that has a current version or is regularly updated to try and remain relevant in the MMO space.

I can't support a server that has Plane of Knowledge and those ridiculous bookstands around the game world that give instant free travel. Also very much dislike the outdoor zone designs and mounts of Luclin. There are a ton of ways to improve the base game of Everquest, and those expansions are not it. Keeping the world of Norrath and its danger in focus is key, while adding features that create more unpredictability and class refinement.
@@Zuranthium I'm not super familiar with Luclin so that will all feel newish to me when it arrives on Quarm. But I definitely agree with the game going "softer" as the expansions rolled out. I am also a fan of character refinement and class progression that adds depth to a class and their role in both solo and group play so we agree there as well. I also wish they would have refined and deepened the trade skills a bit more, adding new and interesting ways to tackle Norrath.
I loved EQ before Sony took it, I don't need to elaborate on that... you know. That said I think the crafting of EQ2 was, until they succumbed to whinging bitches and FFXIV came along. Gathering was shit, but the actual crafting was incredible. I still have folders full of EQAtlas maps and EQrecipes long after I stopped playing but one thing I will give Sony.... the player housing system they bought in, at least in regards to storage and design freedom is the best in any MMO ever.
Camp Check! Guess I'm doing something else for a while. Loved it. Respected queues for raids and rare spawns. Things we'll never see again along with the community spending an evening in line for an oven and everyone losing their minds over a bear sandwich and loving every second of it.

Also, I can’t get Quarm to run well. Whenever I turn left or right to look around, the screen is all jittery and choppy. Just can’t seem to figure it out, so it is unplayable to me as well. Kind of a shame, I wish I could check it out, but I’ve looked up countless fixes and nothing seems to fix it at all.

It's a shame that this massive game is so split across various versions. Furthermore, I think that each version has problems. Old school Everquest is fine and dandy until you start to understand that the game hates solo play and that it's played by the same people that played it back in the day, farming the most valuable camps and bosses most efficiently with their groups and guilds. You can either join them or forget about it.
The live version of the game simply doesn't feel like Everquest, it has a large feature creep and countless zones were made obsolete by introduction of new quest chains. I tried to ignore all that and went to the old zones to relax and grind and it can work, but the monetization is the problem. If you want to really play the game, you have to pay both for expansions and subscription and given how much time the game wants from you to progress, it would soon become like a second job that you pay to work.
It's a shame, really. Not a single MMORPG on the market has that high fantasy pulp aesthetic as Everquest does, but the game feels like it doesn't want to be played. If only someone made an emulator with all the modern expansions, but removing the quests and leaving just the grind, now that would be awesome :D
No, you don't have to buy the expansions for the live server unless you PLAN to get to the high end. Sounds like you just wanted to go check it out, at that point you just have to pay the sub fee to enjoy the game as if you own it.
Taking away the quests in the game and leaving only the grind would create dead servers upon launch. You don't HAVE to do the quests....any of them. Your way to play IS there and intact, play the game without doing the quests.
You're the only person I've ever heard suggesting to remove the quests and I'm sure that you would be 1 of 10 total people that would play on a server like that.....making it DoA.

Yes, I know it would take months to level a character that way, but I think that would be more in the spirit of vanilla. But, to each his own. I'm confused about your comment on the camera on p99. If there's only one thing on p99 that's unequivocally better than PQ it's the client. The 3rd person camera, mouse wheel zoom, tab target and everything zeal attempts to fix on PQ works absolutely smooth and flawlessly on p99. I'm at a total loss of what you're referring to and I've played a lot on both servers.
Yes you can zoom out with the mouse on p99, but you can't rotate the camera around your character without the use of the F9 key, in Quarm I can just rotate around my characters by holding the left mouse button down and panning to either side.
@@RekitRogue Ah, on p99 the camera button we use is the title menu, default is shift-t I believe. I bind mine to t, it starts off with a view directly behind your character which is useful and allows you to rotate your camera around your character and zoom in and out pretty far.

i think the philosophy of quarm captures classic everquest, without the big headaches of classic everquest. like you still have that deep adventure feel, that danger, the requirement to make social bonds, how much your reputation matters. all of those things that made everquest great, minus ALOT of the ui things that made everquest suck ass. like i wanna be fighting dragons and monsters and surprise trains, and adventuring around, not wrestling with the UI. the horrible classic ui is one of the biggest barriers for anyone who hasn't played everquest before. hell even people like who played eq way back in 1999 and into 2002. getting back into eq i almost quit immediately because of the stupid ui. but then i found out you could use zeal on quarm and that changed everything for me.
quarm is like driving a really really classic car, except you changed out the seats to something comfortable, and you modified the engine so you don't have to use leaded gas.

For me P99 is best but Quarm has it place. I have no issues with P99 camera. Quarm has a worse camera than P99 so no idea what you are talking about and loads of Ui options.
When have you last tried Quarm? Quarm HAD camera issues but if you have zeal you're good to go. I find Quarm much better than P99 in terms of user friendly. QOL is nice too and keeps its fresh feeling.

Quarm doesn't face any other inevitable end that ANY announced server giving all the details about the entirety of its life progression.
All of that information was released before the release of the server so that everyone could know what it was BEFORE making a character.

"P99 is the closest things to classic EverQuest" is such an inaccurate statement these days. There is a plethora of things on that server are verifiably not accurate. In some regards it's completely correct, while in others it's WILDLY off base. In a lot of ways, TAKP and Quarm are more accurate to a classic era than P99 is these days.

Quarm went down the QoL toilet. free epics, free legacy, free, free, instant... etc.
P99, even stuck in stale AF Velious for 12 years, still gets almost twice the players. that tells you all you need to know. (yes i know the numbers at login arent double but Quarm allows boxing of mules - and trust me - boxing in general lol). can tell you with certainty Quarm doesnt do anything about boxing, whereas P99 hunts down cheaters with a vengeance.
P99 is too stubborn to move past Velious and that is the ONLY reason Quarm gets players. Otherwise, Quarm would be JUST LIKE THE OTHER QoL boxing Emu's... with 50-100 players.
You like P99, it is where you find comfort in a game that you love and that's okay. You have "you issues" with Quarm and it's not for you and that too is okay. I have "Me issues" with live EQ and prefer Quarm and you guessed it, that's okay as well. Take care man, and I hope your P99 adventures are fantastic. 🍻
