I used this trick recently to save several hundred dollars on 4 tickets from London to Edinburgh. I live in the US and by switching my VPN to the UK, the ticket price was $80 cheaper per person (currency adjusted). A funny and important note if you are in the US and try this- the UK calendar runs from Monday-Sunday instead of Sunday to Saturday. I had to cancel and rebook my return flight because I thoughtlessly clicked on Thursday instead of Wednesday, so pay attention to the DATE and not just the placement on the calendar.

Hi Megan, thank you for the tips regarding cheaper tickets, by changing the location. I will certainly try it next flight. However, I tried to do it with my upcoming trip to Turkey from USA. I have a booking to fly to Turkey in May. I booked the ticket in February for $1460 both ways. Today, in April, I tried to "buy" the same dates ticket but from Turkey location and final price came $1840 - much more expensive. But my guess is that EARLIER booking is significantly better. But your trick may be the best to buying tickets 3-4 months ahead and with the different location. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! I LEARNED SO MUCH! THANK YOU!

I had a different type of savings when flying from Budapest Hungary, to Johannesburg South Africa. The main long flight was from Amsterdam, so the Budapest-Amsterdam leg was a short "feeder flight". I checked for the routing from Vienna-Amsterdam-Johannesburg on the same morning, since VIenna's airport is only a few hours away from Budapest's. To my surprise, the entire fight was over $200 more, starting from Vienna. Why? Because Austria is a higher-income country than Hungary! So, it turned out that on the 11 or 12 hour flight from Amsterdam, I might have been sitting next to an Austrian that paid $200 more for his seat just because he started in Vienna and I started my 2 hour flight to Amsterdam from Budapest! So this again shows that they price differently depending on the country that you are living in (or that they think you are living in - thanks, VPN!)

You're correct, it depends on the airline. Japan Airlines, and I believe ANA, uses regional websites, so you have to login to the specific website to purchase a ticket. If I want to fly from Tokyo to Bangkok, or vice versa, I would need to book the ticket on the Japan region, international site. If I'm going from LA, to Tokyo, to Bangkok, I can book all legs on the North American site. I would not be able to book from LA to Tokyo on the Europe site. Not sure if only the Japanese airlines operate this way.

Hi, Megan. I live in the U.S., and my mailing address associated with my MP account is the same. I followed your instructions step-by-step on the UA site (at least six times using various countries and their respective currencies), but each time I changed the location, a message appeared below the banners with the sign-in link and the Traveler 1 info (shown at approximately 1:40) that read, "We updated the price in your cart. Your cart will have the lowest fare class available to match your billing address or currency type." Does this message basically render the "hack" useless? I'm curious whether any other U.S. -based MP members have booked using this with any success.

@@PortableProfessionalThe biggest problem that I see is that you might be evading taxes - part of the reason of a lower price might be that tickets are taxed less there. And if - as is the case with India - entry into the country that you pretend to be in leaves a trace in your passport they could indeed prove that you weren't in India at the time. So to be on the safe side I would limit the search to visa-free countries, as for instance the Austrian - Hungarian example in the comments. If you need a visa you always get it for both countries (as they are in Schengen) and a lot of people don't need visas anyway.

I have Amex as well as chase cards. I pay 0 on foreign transaction fees, withdrawals from ATMs 🏧 in foreign countries etc using chase since I’m withdrawing from my chase acct and not cash advance.

We just returned from a short trip to NOLA and want to pass on a lessoned learned. When we booked the flight with UAL, I used my Mileage Plus number, but there didn't seem to be a place to add my wife's Mileage Plus number. That became a problem because her TSA precheck did not show up on her boarding pass while mine did so we both had to go through the whole TSA scrum!! UAL explained that we should have used "MyUAL" to manually add her id number. Hopefully this can assist someone else that uses your information. Thanks, JAH

I fly between Bangkok and Los Angeles at least twice a year. I've known about this trick for a long time and have never been able to save any money. Do you really think the IT people writing code for the airline websites are not aware of this stunt? At the least you should reboot after changing location and checking price again. I suspect many are tracking your MAC address rather than location and this is challenging to change.

@robertlloyd3184 you mean an IP address, not the MAC address. Your IP (unless using vpn) ties to you to the country you’re located in. Hence use incognito mode or get vpn from a diff country etc

It doesn't work for me. I tried on United page. Reminds me that I once booked connecting flight because it was cheaper and decided to fly only second leg. At the airport they said I should have started at the first leg for ticket to be valid and my ticket is no longer valid therefore, but those were days when airlines were friendly and they just let me on the flight and continue all the flights on the ticket.

Love your location hacks to save us $!! There are 195 countries in the world. UN doesn't recognize Palestine and Vatican as countries. I find this interesting because 1. vatican is historically church And state (from Constantine 325 AD and Charlemagne 800 AD and 2. Palestine (I thought UN recognized it in 1947.)

Palestine has never been a nation only the name of a region when Emperor Hadrian changed the name of Judea to Palestine (after the Jewish enemy, the Philistines) as punishment after the failed Bar Kobba revolt in 135 CE.

But what happens IF you want to get say United Miles credit, which usually requires you to log into your account, and then they know where your "home" country is??
One thing I've noticed (not specifically with flights) but that people should keep in mind, is that some countries have VAT or tariffs built-into the price, so the price you see may include that, whereas in other countries, like the US, this is not always factored into the price you see. Most airlines will add this for you so the price you see generally does include taxes, but since (in the US) tax on goods can vary from state to state, prices shown are not always shown with taxes, so what may appear to be a better deal on an item, may not be when you add taxes, or it may be the same price as say in CAnada or in Europe, it's just that those countries may add VAT automatically and you pay the price you see. I see this a lot when people try to compare prices on cameras for example from Asia, Europe and the US, and they notice a difference, only to realize that many countires in Europe for example have VAT buit-in whereas in the US taxes are not generally listed, and are only usually listed when you to actually buy the item.

To tackle the first part, you can log in and switch the country setting to any location you prefer while still earning miles. Alternatively, you can stay logged out and only enter your MileagePlus number when asked. Your 'home country' doesn't matter; what matters is where it thinks you are when you make the booking. I earned miles on this flight. Good luck!

Get 49% off and 3 months free isn't exactly corrrect. They are offering 15 months for the price of 12 but the cost, you're out of pocket cost, is the same.

Hey Paul! Thanks for flagging this. I took another look on the checkout page and it's 36% off 12 months ($99.95 instead of $155.40) and then a bonus 3 months after that. Corrected the 49% to be 36%. Really appreciate you letting me know and sorry for the confusion. Safe travels!

This doesn't add up. Clearly, at 3mins20s in, you are comparing the price listed in GBP and USD, for the sake of this comment.
In it you show GBP 661, and USD 809 - that is virtually THE SAME PRICE! The conversion from GBP to USD is around 1.25 USD for every 1 GBP. The same for Canadian dollars (different rate). There is no magic happening here, and you are incorrect in saying that one is "cheaper" than another.
Do you really think airlines are so stupid that they have "bugs" like this to allow people to exploit?
You also fail to clearly explain to your audience that if someone stupidly follows your advice and changes their location to change the currency used when purchasing a ticket from their usual national currency, unless they are using a credit card from Amex or another that doesn't charge currency conversion fees, they are just screwing themselves over again by paying 2-5% in fees on top of the SAME price they would have paid if they had just used their own national currency.

Is there ever sny problem with the airline or security after setting your location to a 3rd world nation, yet your passport is that of a first world nation?

    • @PortableProfessional
      @PortableProfessional  7 місяців тому +3

Nope, there shouldn't be. It's the same price you would see if you were actually sitting in that country at the time of booking the flight regardless of your nationality, passport or income. Thanks for watching, best of luck on your bookings!
