Agreed even as a commentator he was very balanced in outlook and not as biased as the other commentators. Great sense of humour as well - doesn't take himself too seriously. He was a great player too but we will forgive him for it. Whenever he was playing instead of Kelleher I knew we had a proper game coming because he was rugby smart. Kelleher was just strong. When Kelleher was playing I breathed a sigh of relief.

That was a bloody awesome podcast and interview! John Smit has a great sense of humour and Justin is seriously like an honorary citizen of South Africa, his respect and knowledge of our culture is admirable! And that’s why this is the most amazing and beautiful game on the planet!
    I really enjoyed watching that.!!!!

Best interview yet. Smit is a legend, and Marshall knows it. Deflated the usual Justinarrogance. “I ate myself into rugby” is a classic line that all forwards can identify with. Smit is still massive, filling that little sofa. Great sense of humour. His braai explanation was bang on. If the conversation is flowing, more wood goes on and more beer comes out. Anyone who has experienced a real South African braai can relate. Nothing like it. The behind-the-scenes stories were epic. Well done.

I was at that 2007 Fiji Quarter Final... I sat behind the posts where Butch James scored that crucial try. I will never forget that mix of disbelief and fear that the Springboks were going to lose to Fiji... (that was what it felt like, because everything Fiji did turned to gold, and 90% of that crowd was behind them... it felt like this unstoppable tsunami of emotion)... and then the HUGE relief when Butch scored that try. I could see the gap opening in the Fiji defensive line and started to scream and point... and at the same time he also saw it and went for it. That visual of his eyes moving to the gap and bursting through there is burned in my mind forever. So it was so interesting to hear John Smit's side of that story! Now I understand why they suddenly turned things around.
