HIT THE BELL & TELL A FRIEND ABOUT ME. - Розваги
To put it plainly, West end girls are rich and proper. East end boys are rugged, poor, working class or "dangerous" types.
Like in many cultures, it is the classic story of rich women going across the tracks for "low class" men. For example, much like Princess Leia and Han Solo.
Yes the song is about "class" structure in London.
London class structure. I'm an American who was married to one of those London boys.
Also Billie Joel's "Uptown Girl".
I always thought the west end girls were actually east end girls but uptown shopping clubbing etc
It's more layered than that. 1980s London East End = post-industrial decay and social deprivation, West End = traditional wealth but more importantly for this song it was the glamour, being the benefactory of the 1980s capitalist financial sector boom that saw the explosion of the yuppie culture of excess as opposed to the more sober, dusty old money. True it plays on words conjuring the traditional image of rough poor boy meets glamour girl but it is in fact is about the idea of the lustful draw of escapism and temptation of urban and capital excesses that lead you down the dive bar or a gun against your head (the dive bar is in the West End remember, not the East End ie you think you do not fit in), "no one knows your name" is a clear echo of a feeling of urban alienation brought about the two seismic socio-political shifts London saw in the latter half of the 20th C, collapse of the traditional working class communities during the post industrial decline and those who benefitted from the free market economy boom of the 1980s. The Pet Shop Boys did many other songs about those subjects.
Oh the 80s... How I miss them. Loved this song.
I think they're still around you know. (...but their songs probably don't sound quite like they did in 1985.)
The Pet Shop Boys never
went away. Their latest album
is "Hotspot". Other albums
from the past three decades
include "Behavior", "NightLife",
"Very", "Bi-Lingual" & "Super".
Just because music isn't played
on the radio or celebrated
in the media doesn't mean
it doesn't exist or isn't out there.
80's never die
I was stating that I miss the 80s... I know the pet shop boys are still around.
The 80s, when the music was very good.
"Is he always this serious?"
Yes. The other one is even more serious. They don't smile on demand. That's how they've rolled since the beginning of time.
If you knew London in the 80s, you would get this song on a few more levels.
Oh yeah. I spent a lot of time in London in the 80s. One time I didn't come home for a few months.
These guys came along at exactly the right time (early 80's) they were part of the New wave genre of 80's music.
A great London hymn. Nothing is more superbly Londoner and British than this. PSB are exquisite
The 80's had great song's and this is one of them.
Miss the 80’s. And the music. Glad I grew up then. Great teenage yesrs
👏🏾👏🏾🙋🏾♀️
Class of ‘86. 👩🏻🎓
@@maryannlockwood7806 class of 88
The absolute best time to grow up.
Class of '87
I miss the 80s... What a great time to grow up and be alive.
This is a very British song with specific references that expressed the times it was released.
West end is the glitzy rich side of London. And the East end is considered the bad side of town.
Yep them rich boys were crossing the tracks go see about them West end girls. A tale as old as Time.
@@papillonmjbIt's the other way around. The rich girls are going out with the poor boys.
@@terriertz6837 you don't think Rich boys go across the tracks to find and take advantage of poor girls? And the song it sounds to me like the Western boys the ones traveling. We could debate this all day but all I have to do is look at my own lineage. My daddy was uptown and went down to where the working class folks were and found my Carolina born sharecroppers granddaughter mother. don't sit there and tell me it's always poor women going out gold digging. Rich boys are oftentimes so repressed they have to go find a girl that knows how to have a good time without anybody telling her which fork to use. You kiss my Carolina Mama's rice!
@@papillonmjb ya just have the sides of town mixed up. Settle down. Dang.
This isnt the original
That's the first of several hundreds of fantastic songs they have made and are still doing today.
Legends.
My mom had this on vinyl. She loved this song so in turn I do too.
I'm a sista and I love this song. Matter of fact I m a fan of the pet shop boys since 1986 when I was 16 years old
I am a sister way older than you. Lol! My cousin is a big Pet Shop Boys fan. Big Black straight man. When they come to town I have to go with him to the concerts. Not too many of us there. Lol!
@@adc2327 thats alright nigh! I know it's not many of us at the concerts.. lol. Id love for them to come to South Carolina ....thanks 4 responding!🤎👏🏾✊🏾👊🏾👍🏾
@@mitzithompson6585 Mitzi, I even met them back in the day. They signed an album for me. We still had vinyl back then. Lol!
@@adc2327 Get out!!! Thats whats up!! I'm jealous...lol...awesome ✊🏾👍🏾
“If you feel unsafe blink twice”. I’m cryingggg 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The whole thing about Pet Shop Boys in the 80s is that they stood out a mile. Not dancing around is a conscious stylistic choice, because everyone else back then did. They looked different, they sounded different, their album covers looked different. There was depth to their lyrics that most pop acts lacked, but they still had some big hits, especially here in the UK.
Suburbia. Hey headmaster. Being boring. Jealously. DJ Culture. Miserablism. Bet she’s not your girlfriend. Too many people. Left to my own devices. It’s alright. We all feel better in the dark. So hard. Domino dancing. So many great songs. I could go on and on.
@@kayelle8005 Yes, there's a lot besides the Hit Music. Their album tracks and b-sides are full of Alternative gems, but I would feel like Your Funny Uncle going on and on if I were to list them all. There's a character limit on UA-cam so It Couldn't Happen Here without multiple comments.
@@RobMcDermott I just think they’re massively under appreciated. Lots of great music that holds up really well. Plus I can cope with the crazy aunt vibes from my own list 🤣
For me, it's this one and Rent.
One of the best artists of the 80s and still going strong today hes wrote so many songs for different artists too
Neil Tennant and Christopher Lowe are total legends
I was 18 doing spring break in FL and for the first time I saw the ocean and this song was everywhere, sounded so good on a crisp sound system every time I hear it for a moment or two I young again.
I just love watching people who’ve never heard these 80s songs before that I grew up listening to.
My favorite song since it first came out when I was stationed in New Orleans. 21 years later I finally make it to London. Kids wanted McDonald's and we're sitting in one on the West End and this song comes on. Very surreal
East end London..... And the better end of town...west end.
Everyone in New Wave used to hold that stance....no reaction....
Absolutely loved your thoughts on this classic track. I learnt to play keyboards because of this track. I’ve been a fan for over 25years. I still think this track sounds as fresh now as it did then.
Pet shop boys did so many fire tracks bro, legends
I can tell you though, those guys weren't interested in any girls. "It's a Sin" is my favourite of their tracks.
🌈 Love Em!!
Neil is gay, I always thought Chris is straight? Not that it makes the slightest difference!
Mine too
@@jonnylumberjack6223 Yes, Chris is straight and married.
@@jonnylumberjack6223 It sure doesn't matter. You are right!
Omg I loved this song!!!!
Simple Red time
@@kennymccormick9292 NOOO, I'm desperatly Holding back the years, or at least trying to!
That bored look was the thing back then. It's called 'ennui', or the 'I' m so done with everything' look.
That’s how we all posed in photos back then. Everyone looked like that in my high school year book. Lol! It was considered cool (and preppy) back then. 😎
It's one of the things that Gen X is known for, not giving a fuck.
I can still sing every word of this song. Awesome.
exactly
The seriousness is called being ‘cool’.. haha 😆
They are "Brits" after all !
Yup their 'West End Girls' single was released in April of 1984 while it was on the album "Please" released the following year.
That was the funniest reaction ever! Thank you for the refreshing take on good ol' Neil and Chris.
Miss the 80's😭 But glad I get to relive moments through the music, movies and memories.✨🌺💜
Loved this song when it first came out. I used sing this all the time. I recommend It's a Sin and What have I Done to Deserve this. Both great songs.
I was stationed in London when they got popular. They would often hang out at Heaven Ultra Disco. The largest Gay nightclub in Europe at the time. Fun!
Roger Harris: Been to Heaven in the 80s. Saw some great bands. Naive as I was I didn't get that was a gay hangout. Until I saw a poster on the wall with two men with moustaches kissing. 😃
🤮
@@bjhellstream I saw Eartha Kitt in concert there. I honestly didn't know she was supposed to perform that night! Was on the massive dance floor having a blast and all of a sudden she appears on stage with a couple scantily clad and oiled up muscle men. She had a reputation for liking men a lot! Haha! I think she must have had a good buzz on because they practically had to carry her on and off the stage! Amazing fun!
@@bjhellstream I regret that I never made it to Gay Night at the Hippodrome! I'm pretty sure it was Thursday nights and I only had the weekends off.
@@rogerharris825 I'm not gay but was still having fun. Saw synthpop duo Eddie & Sunshine there on a Monday concert night. It was in the early eighties and I guess I was naive to not notice it was a gay club. The suntanned, bleach blond, muscular bartenders in tight t-shirts should've given it away. But who cares. Were all just people...
The energy is simply cool calm and collected. The energy shows emotions that cannot be affected. He's cold as ice, he is not simping on anyone. This is one of my favorite alternative rock songs from the '80s. Nice reaction!
The song was inspired by the members love of hip hop, it’d also inspired by a poem called “The Waste Land” and old gangster films. It’s also really deep if you learn of its origins, these dudes were super serious with their love of all types of music, poetry, and films.
As a kid of the 80s, I'm ashamed that it took me this long to get into Pet Shop Boys. They're spectacular. You should check out "It's a Sin" or "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money) Version 2".
I like "Opportunities" and "Shopping" by the Pet Shop Boys.
He still performs this song live and he still sounds good
Nightclubs in the West end of 1980's, was an area where rich girls would come into contact young men from east London from a less well off background and get down on the dancefloor.
The contentious objector look is the hallmark of their video style.
Now you got me on an 80's vibe-do Tears for Fears.
At 4:14 - that haunting note I love it. Just brings you to the 80s
Love this song. So much great music growing up in the 80s.
I absolutely loved the 1980s LOL. All kinds of fun music
As American growing up in 80's love this song never new what it was about until I read the comments thanks for the heads up.
My inner goth girl is thrilled that you watched this... I also recommend Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears
I think my favorite Pet Shop Boys track is their version of Willie Nelson's song, "Always On My Mind."
At one point that was my favorite PSB song, but they've made better since.
Watch --new order- blue Monday
--- the specials- message to you Rudy
--- the clash- any song by them.
As a long-time (since the 90s), British fan of the Pet Shop Boys, I SALUTE YOU, my good sir!
80s had so many great songs ..so many memories..
Pet Shop Boys are geniuses.
I spent some time in London in the 80s. This song takes me right back there!
This song has such a cool vibe to it.
Loved to dance to this!!!!!
I am sure you will be intrigued by Pet Shop Boys - Left to my own Devices Wembley 2004 remastered HD. After your introduction to this wonderful group's first hit West End Girls, your journey has just begun and will continue. Thanks for taking time to check them out.
I like you and your reactions and have Subscribed but I am glad AT LAST you are actually looking at the video while moving..lol
Especially as that has been my wonderful, beloved Home Town that as given me 66 fantastic years. To make me even more nostalgic that Train Station "Waterloo" was near me @ 5'16 and immediately followed by the number 42 Bus @5'18 that went down my Walworth Road High Street in South East London. Moved from there 37 years ago to the safe S E London Suburbs which are lovely but I miss the vibe and buzz and only 2/3 miles from London's West End then!
I was listening to this in my teen years.
I loved your reaction. 🖤 The vocalist, Neil, wrote the lyrics for this song in 1984 and it’s social commentary on British morals. Most of their songs were making social commentary. They weren’t just another 80’s pop band.
Love your Channel, Yo check out Lisa Stansfield “Been Around The World”, And that’s how those techno groups demeanor was
As a teenage boy when that came out I remember “Been Around the World” being a frustrating video to watch for many reasons.
kelis sampled the line " call the police theres a mad girl in town" in her song " trick me"
Love how they used Roland keyboards to enhance the electro feel of this tune. And, background strings. And the old Finland petrol stations!🤣 I also hated how the ‘other guy’ didn’t do owt!!!
PS: Curtis Blow… stop it right now!😂 UK here!
It’s a London Thing as far as the different ends, West Ends Girls were the FLYEST
West end: upper class East end: rough and tumble (London)
I only know this song from playing GTA V. Heard it one time, while Franklin was getting a lap dance, and was hooked lol. Started playing it all the time as I cruised around doing missions.
For me, this song will always be correlated with my memories of playing GTA for the first time back in 2013. It’s nice to see all the comments of people enjoying this song back in the 80s when it first came out as much as I did, although it was much later.
I am happy to know I am not the only one who got hooked to this 80s Synthpop Gem. Salud and another Pet Shop Boys hit suggestion is Domino Dancing
Yes it's from the 80's. I remember buying the album in 1984. And yes it has been sampled by several artists since. It's about high class interacting with low class. The tough part of London versus the posh area. East versus West. The flat attitude the singer is displaying was very fashionable in the mid 80's. It was all about having the right look and acting detached - aloof - unemotional - disinterested. Some pulled it off better than others. That's what was cool at that time.
At 4:35 there are at least 2 hip-hop songs sampled that part. That I can think of right now. Music is beautiful
West. End. Girls...
Haven't heard this one in a while. Good stuff
I was trying to find the back story behind this song if there was any - but it just sound so 80s. The feel and sound
Hey nice Video i remember this 80s classic pet shop boys west end girls Great Song and loved your Reaction and that Cool you for 1st time😊
Also, they have a song called, IT'S A SIN that is another great hit! Pet Shop Boys are a great 1980's British group that made a big splash during the 80's BRIT MUSIC INVASION! I am a huge fan of theirs!
Saw them live and they were amazing.
This was MY JAM back in the day. DID. NOT. LEAVE. THE. DANCEFLOOR. Never gets old.
It's a catchy song yet a song can take you in so many ways. Makes you think
84 this came out, I was 9.Growing up in the 80s was a blast
My era! Bought the record! Love love love Pet shop boys!
A game changer of a track . 85 . Start of the PSB time . British melancholy set to a dance beat . Un matched
Aahh the 80s, I think I liked it back but can't say I've heard since but cool throwback 👍
East End and West End are places in London and in early eighties I think there was social barriers that avoided them to have closer social interaction or even emotional relationship I think.
Another song from Pet Shop Boys worth listening to is "What Did I Do To Deserve This"!
My favorites are Left to my own devices, and Being boring
These guys were back with Depeche Mode, way before The Church or Gene Loves Jezebel. They were starting when Madonna was in her Somewhere Seeking Suzanne days.
Loved The Church and Gene loves Jezebel as well!!!! Good times....
EPIC! Choice; 'Pet Shop Boys' Phenomenal 80'S band, during the British Invasion era
The BRITS delivered a MORE Serious swag in their visuals. Amazing artists in the 🇬🇧UK LEGENDS ICONS.
Lol. Those grooves made some folk dance, others more like seizures
Pet shop boys are Genius. Are the Best.
Yes, white gay synth group rap!
Recorded in 1983/1984 in New York, as Neil was there on journo assignment. Inspired by T.S. Elliot's poem 'The Waste Land' and the famous socialist history book 'To the Finland Station' by Edmund Wilson. The song was re-recorded in 1985 after they eventually changed manager and label.
I loved this song back in the day, had the cassette tape, listened until it wore out.
I never paid attention to the lyrics. The beat and feel of this song is so great.
спасибо за обзор одной из самых шедевральных песен 20-го века
Sooo many songs to love!!!
>What Have I Done to Deserve This?
>Opportunities
>Rent
>It's a Sin
>Yesterday, When I Was Mad
>So Hard
>Suburbia
>I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing
>Absolutely Fabulous
That cool, sophisticated detachment was an attitude that a lot of British bands adopted from Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music. Bit of Bowie thrown in for good measure. But yeah, this band was built to last in the clubs.
Loved this song. Thank you!
Love this song! They made a lot of great hits. Suburbia and cover of You were always on my mind.
the 80´s most creative century in Music especially in UK and Germany
Germany has some great 80s hits!
We danced our asses off, songs had to have a good beat, rythum, singable lyrics
And have great vibes
в 80-х PSB написали одну из немногих своих песен в таком стиле лучше в разы, чем многие современные РЭП исполнители
I thought it was Grace Jones, I was corrected by oceanempire who informed me it was Helena Springs
Ahh! I always thought it sounded like Annie Lennox.
Helena Springs
@@oceanempire I stand Corrected I had always assumed it was Grace she was also big back then I always liked the song but never really looked into it. Thanks for correcting me.
This song had a fantastic atmosphere, it seemed to catch the feel of London at night.
It's a song worth paying attention to.............................................it's really fucking good man.
LOL great reaction! When i was dating my bf (now husband) he lived in the east end of the city and I was in the west end, also he came from the East (Asia) and me the West so we always put our own spin on this song. Good memories!!
I love that joint. It was like the White P Funk lol
