This challenge is impossible for Dave, he loves it when he sees a troll and figures out what happened. Even the most torturous troll level makes him smile, at least in the beginning. xD
Both Dave and Carl (who ignored the rules altogether) thought they weren't supposed to laugh or smile, but the level has sound effects that cost points, too. The baby face counts as a smile, and the audience laughter sound counts as laughter.

To be fair, the description implies the player laughing or smiling, not specifying and bringing attention to the in-game effects.
@@djmariuzzo7445 I distinctly remember watching a Carl video where he was playing all 4th Wall Rule levels. He laughed so much that he just told chat he wasn't going to keep score.

Every time something funny happens I look at that counter in the corner and just wait for it to climb up
I wonder if the "GUTS?" section would've worked differently had you not hesitated long enough for the Thwomp to fall off the track below. Like if it triggered something that changed how the next room functioned.

Y'know what else is counterintuitive? Drifting. Wise old Doc Hudson from Cars famously said "Turn right to go left." McQueen didn't believe it at first either until he had a better handle of the situation.

It's easy not to laugh at these levels. Find them incredibly annoying and un-fun. Then it's easy. You just get grouchy after every death.

Correct me if I'm wrong but every time you hit restart the level, that should have reset your points to zero...so technically until checkpoint you can always reset your point total from smiling and laughing to zero by selecting restart rather then simply just dying over and over.
You can also laugh like a fool when you get to 10 points just to reset counter before you get to somewhere far, so you don't end up like Dave. Or just ignore counting points altogether, if you want to look for loopholes for fun challenge.
I too find that the best jokes are the ones you have to explain.

The other loophole, is to just restart anytime you feel like it. Then you'll never accumulate 15 points in the first place. ;) The availability of a few softlocks helps with that.
