    This is the first comment I have EVER left on a UA-cam video and trust me when I say I've watched allll the college vids on here. I've been highkey obsessed with/stressed about college ever since my freshman year and it literally took this one video to make all that stress go away.

    Honestly I've never commented on a UA-cam video but I've never felt so compelled to write something.
    Thank you so much for this video. As a current junior I've fallen into the deep hole of Ivy League reaction and stats videos where everyone seems to be the president of 15 clubs with perfect scores and an endless list of EC. Of course I am incredibly proud of them, yet after watching these videos I can't help but feel as if there's a heavy weight on my heart, reminding me that I can't compare to all these achievements and activities. Your video was different. After watching this, I really feel reassured and inspired, thank you so much for talking about the mental aspects of college applications and being realistic. Congrats on getting accepted into Ivy League and other schools!! This is honestly the best stats vid I've ever seen, kudos

    • @QuonHowery02
      @QuonHowery02  4 роки тому +136

      So in most cases, the ones with an application process where you have to answer short questions and wait to be accepted to attend are the ones you want to go for. If they're just "harvard summer courses" or "______ summer courses" theyre probably not it. if all you need to do is pay to attend it's not helping you. things like the yale young global leaders program, where there's an application process, are ones that help your resume. and you can always double check and look up their acceptance rates (under 20% is a good indicator of their program recognition) or see if it's legit. hope this helped!

    Hey man! I don't know if you're still reading comments, but im gonna let my thoughts spill out anyway. Im currently a junior right now, which is probably not the demographic you were aiming for with this video, but it's been very recently (these past 4 months, around the end of my sophomore year) that i've discovered what im going to call a "curse of knowledge". Basically ive gotten more aware of myself, of highschool, and my goals. To the freshmen and sophomores reading this: you're absolutely on the right track. When i was in your shoes, all i ever focused on was completing homework assignments and playing video games. For two years. It's a shame that I wasted those two years, and ever since having my "curse of knowledge" and dwelling on that regret for four months, ive spiraled into depression, and on occasion, a feeling i can only describe as being hit by a truck load of straight sadness, anger, and remorse at random moments. It's weird, I know.
    Im also in the same financial situation as you, I think. But instead of living in a city, I live in a very small town in Oklahoma. And its pretty terrible. Because of this and my low income status (my family earns around $27k/year), opportunities rarely show up. And when they do, none of my parents and I know about it. It's been very hard to keep up with peers around the U.S -- such as yourself -- who have absolutely fantastic ECs and APs and awards and the whatnot.
    For my own stats, I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, 4 Honors, 4 APs (3 currently being taken) i've taken no AP tests (even though I had APWorld sophomore year, I didnt care about it to take the AP test), a 25 on the ACT, and a 1120 on my PSAT. The ACT is especially disheartening to me because I had scheduled the testing date in the midst of my sadness and sulking and crammed studying 4 days before the exam. For my PSAT, I pretty much went in blind. Of course this was before the big sad hit. And now, dont even get me started on my EC's. BECAUSE I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NONE. It's so depressing i want to just end myself. It's like having your field of view locked at 50 in a game. My vision was so narrow and focused on one thing that I could barely make out what was happening around me. And now I pay the consequences by waking up everyday to the same drab, feeling far below exceptional, and even though my goals are big, my motivation is severely lacking.
    Ive been thinking that right now is my last chance. No second wind, because senior year will be drained of opportunity. I definitely do not think ~300 days of school + summer will be enough for me to bolster my application anymore, but i told myself, screw that. Im gonna try my best anyway. I've picked up a few interests other than video games, mainly being writing, art, and technology (if you could even say thats an interest). I created my school's very first stem club before sophomore year ended, which me and my friends named the business and tech club. Although the only members are me and 2 other friends, we plan to do something big with it. I also plan to create a writing club and join art club, and hopefully i'm able to make some big accomplishments in them. However i seriously doubt it. I dont understand why but i just get this random adrenaline-like rush were i get super ambitious before the fatigue and self doubt kicks in. But im gonna try, and I wanted to ask you, which although you don't share any of my circumstances other than the financial one, i want to know if theres anything I should do. Or even CAN do. You seem like a great guy, and honestly the most down to earth college youtuber ive seen. I saw your personal essay video as well, you've been through a seriously tough life. I wish you the best, and anyone else reading this too
    EDIT: About the essay thing, do you know if there are a group of people who are willing to read and share their thoughts on your college essays? I don't feel quite comfortable letting people I know read stuff that I wrote, and would much prefer if a stranger did instead.

    Quon: Be able to figure out how to express your identity while capturing interest.
    Me: Can I write about being boring?
    But jokes aside, thank you for this video. This is actually one of the most helpful and realistic video that I've seen on youtube(and I've watched a lot). I like how you don't brag about your achievements and stats- although you do have the right to do so- and instead teach the viewers about what you personally thought about each activity etc. Congrats on getting into so many good schools, btw!

    Ik I’m late but I’m about to go into my sophomore year and I’ve been stressing about colleges. I’ve been looking all over UA-cam and binging videos to figure out where to start and yours is the best!! This is amazing advice, it’s in depth, and ur also funny and entertaining. I watched your college reaction video and I never comment on videos but I needed to thank you for this!!

    Thank you for this video, Quon. I really hope freshmen take to heart what you are saying in the video. I am a junior right now and I feel like I didn't prepare much for college, specifically the college application. As a student who comes from a low-income household, I wish I had known about all the things you said in the video when I was a freshman. I feel that extra-curriculars are vital to the college application, and I never did nor think of any summer programs of my own interest, and that's on me. Iv'e done art club in school, robotics club, and I'm starting a club for students who love to produce music or rap. I don't know if that will be good enough for college applications.

      hey bro, don't worry too much about it. i wish i'd told myself these things too, i was basically in your position. just keep grinding and hopefully it works out.
      and it's never too late to keep building your resume! it sounds like you have a lot of potential to build on those clubs, try finding things like competitions, awards, scholarships etc that you can put on your resume before apps. you can so update your application with new materials, so just keep grinding.
      and undergrad really is not that important (except for med/law school lol) there are so many ways out. best of luck to you
