  • Step by step of how to replace your weather stripping on a steel exterior door. I used the magnetic replacement seal (reference link below) but this would work the same for a standard foam or rubber seal with any kerf style door. This is a project that anyone can handle and a great way to keep your home cool in the summers and warm in the winters.

    I appreciate how simple this video was. It wasn’t full of extra information before getting to the actual task. Concise, descriptive, and good quality. 👍🏼

    Thanks for actually showing us how to do this and not just saying what you're doing like other diy “how to” channels do.

    Great video. I don't understand how the magnet works, though.

      I believe this is really meant for for steel doors (per the description on Amazon). It has a very weak magnet inside the strip. Technically, it's supposed to help pull the door shut, but it is obviously a useless feature for wooden doors.

    What do you do if there's still light coming thru after you've installed the strip?

    I have a front door that sure lets the cold air come in. I'll have to replace the current weather stripping. I'm in southern Alberta and it gets cold here. Thanks for the video.

    ...but how did you know what size kerf to buy...the last two I bought don't hit or press against the door enough. Also, my other door seems to not come off. So its been a pain. Definitely not 1 size fits all.

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  3 роки тому

      Hi Carla, yeah most of the kerf seals you find at home improvement stores will fill a max gap width of 11/16 of an inch. Do you know how large of a gap you are trying to fill with the weather stripping?

    You never actually mentioned what the difference between magnetic and non magnetic stripping is or how it works?

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  4 роки тому +14

      The magnetic strip will actually be attracted to the door as long as you have a steel exterior door. That helps to fill any air gaps compared to what you might get with a non-magnetic weather stripping. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hello, If the door is wooden and does not have magnets , is there a wat to make it magentic any kits ? metal stripes ?

    • @EverydayHomeRepairs
      @EverydayHomeRepairs  3 роки тому +1

      I would probably go with a standard weather seal assuming the gaps you are needing to close are less than the width of the weather stripping. This kit can seal roughly a 5/8" gap amzn.to/3poyRqD

  • @trinitylancer

    Scott, my front door is fairly new around September of 2019. Yet I noticed the weather stripping also new makes decent contact from the top of door to a point about 18" above grade where a consistent 1/16" to perhaps 1/8' gap exists. Should I try and replace it with a size that is an 1/8" to 3/16" larger than what is there now and will this affect the majority of the door that had a decent seal from a point of 18" to the top? How is this type of weather stripping officially measured so that I can be well prepared shopping for the next size up? By the way, this is the hinged side of the door.
