The sports card unopened box market is crazy. It’s a massive gamble and the prices for the gamble aren’t worth it. Imagine if a stock existed where you could spend $5000 with a forecast that there’s a 1% chance that you’ll come up big and a 99% chance that the value will plummet - not a soul would buy it. It’s just such a bad investment beyond the thrill of opening such rare and expensive products. You’d literally need to hit a crosby or ovi rookie or Gretzky as you said to make the 5 grand back here 😢

If a box has two, that's a 2.3% chance. If you sit down at a $5,000 table in Vegas, you need to understand these basics. Or else you join the endless hoards who walk home in a drunken barrel. Why do I say all this (other than being my normal annoying self)? Because ungraded it was a $500 card a year ago, and probably is a $1,500 card now. The (vertical) Crosby RC Auto is worth more, but there are only 299 in the entire population. All this math might make sense to someone with money to burn. But, that money could be invested elsewhere with 100% certainty on a return, whereby the graded RC Auto of Crosby could be bought outright, again with 100% certainty. (Have you ever tried selling a $200 secondhand couch on FB Marketplace. Ppl will negotiate for days, down to the penny. Yet go out and drop $500 on a box of five cards, without any mathematical clue whatsoever. A lumpy couch they'll have for five years.) The hobby is not luck or "hit and miss." It is an industry - and social media echo chamber - that reinforces not understanding these basic facts. For profit. But certainly not the profit (loss) of whoever's box that was.
