Personally, I think the episodes "Calling All Titans" and "Titans Forever" would make for a much better alternative finale to the show, an action-packed two-parter featuring multiple characters from previous episodes, that would've been a great finale.
They wanted to do a anime-style ending with meaning to it.
The reason is TT borrowed a lot of anime ending and it was popular at the time, so many shows tended to end on the "big fight" ending that they wanted to be different. Since the show did so many things differently. But as expected, their audience wanted the same as every other show around at the time, a big fight.

It's my understanding this wasn't meant to be the series finale because the show got cancelled, possibly due to disputes over merchandising rights.

This is my biggest pet peeves with TV shows. NEVER END WITH A CLIFFHANGER. That always pissed me off because now this issue that's been brought up will never be resolved I still remember Moesha ending with her brother being kidnapped and that still pisses off to this day.
It's writing 101: cliffhanger finale, bad idea.

Funny you mention Moesha since that pregnancy b plot was to be resolved in Season 7 (had there been a S7 if UPN renewed it instead of cancellation) in the form of Mo being preggers with Q's baby according to Sheryl Lee Ralph
My personal theory is that the whole thing is symbolizing the show ending, but yeah, DEFINITELY a horrible way to do it.
How? It ties the character's feelings into the show's ending in a deep and symbolic way, and caps off Terra and Beast Boy's character arcs from Seasons 2 and 5 wonderfully.

Well duh, they kept on saying that things don't last forever, or that things change, and that you have to let things go. The episode is clearly telling us that the series is over and we have to let it go.

This episode could have actually worked if they had changed two things:
1. It actually IS Terra with no pretense or bullshit ambiguity. And have it just be that after she was resurrected, she moved away and moved on. Then have Beast Boy's arc be completed by him moving on too. Maybe involve all of the Titans in this story so it actually feels like it's one last story of them all together without it being the apocalypse?
2. ERASE THE STUPID MONSTER SUBPLOT

Only if we as the audience get to see Terra's reasoning/motivation for the decision. I think that was another big problem with this episode, that it just felt like there was no explanation for anything that happened.
I felt that they only used Beast Boy because he felt the strongest about Terra

From what I heard, "The End" was supposed to be the series finale, but the show got greenlit for another season
And then got CANCELLED a few episodes in for some reason that I don't know about. This episode wasn't meant to be a series finale, they intended to continue the series and most likely this episode was to open a new story plot FOR the new season. The rug just happened to be pulled right under the developers before they could do anything about it. Completely changing the episode for a series finale would have been too drastic, and just sent the episode as is, knowing there was not much they could do to change the situation. Don't blame the makers, blame the company that cut the season off right after green-lighting it. (Not mad at you, just speaking passionately about it)
I agree with you, Mr. Enter. This episode was a bit of waste of time, not even as a subtle epilogue. Even the plot feels hallow on ending the series as a whole.

This wasn't PLANNED on being the series finale. The show got cancelled. You can't really fault a show for having a shitty ending when the network pulled the plug on it. Moesha had that same issue.
That’s why you don’t end a season on cliff hanger, whether it’s the series finale or not.
Yeah, this is why pretty much every show writes their season finales in a way that can plausibly work as a series finale (discounting cases where they were renewed for another season well in advance.) If you try to pull something like this, and you don't get your new season, now your show is known for its terrible ending
Regardless you arent suppose to end seasons on a cliffhanger anyway. Not unless you know for certain you are getting another one.
Moral of the story:
Don't end season finales on cliffhangers, especially if you aren't sure if you're going to get another one.

If Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo was supposed to be the true finale to the show, why didn't it answer any of the questions left by this episode? I mean, I like that movie fine, but it would've been a lot more interesting if it had given us the answers we were left thinking about from this episode.
The events in the movie took place between Seasons 4 and 5.

The biggest problem with this ending is that the creators didn't know it was going to be the ending. They fully planned on being renewed for another season, but the network royally screwed them over.
I kinda appreciate the unrelated epilogue feeling this episode was going for. I always interpreted the ending as the second part to phrase that that the title was derived from.
“The more things change, the more they stay the same.”
You know, it ends with Beast Boy going back to do what he and his team does best: save the day, even though a bunch of things around him have changed dramatically. I thought it did give off that “and the adventures continue” vibe, but just on a very melancholy note as opposed to the usual upbeat tone that sentiments usually conveys.
With Terra, I think the idea was that we should just be happy she got a second chance at life and understand that Beast Boy shouldn’t be trying to drag her back into a life that clearly didn’t end well for her.
Leaving things open I thought was a good way to basically say: “sometimes when things are different, there isn’t an easy answer. Sometimes there isn’t an answer at all. But how we react to the changes is more important than why they happened” or something
Like I said, it’s very much a an epilogue to the real finale and it was trying to convey an idea/feeling rather than an actual plot.
That's basically how I feel about the episode. It operates more on mood and emotion than logic, but I can respect the decision to end the series on such an ambiguous note.
The execution is crap though.
Except Terras powers overreact to stress and shes in school wich is really stressful so eventually shes gonna explode and take the school with her. Thats a bad thingm
I don’t know thinking more on it I think it would have been better if they address the idea (maybe through Beast Boy near the end of the episode) the amount of pain and stress she originally went through and add a scene where she’s happily talking to her friends in the distance and have Beast Boy decide to move on and just rejoin the Titans. I think that would be a better way of conveying the message of moving on not only for Beast Boy but for the audience. Back then I think fans really missed Terra and wanted her back to the Titans to be happy. Even if that didn’t work out in the episode I think showing her happy in the last minutes of the episode would of been enough closure to some people even if we didn’t get all the answers.

Moral of the story: When you’re writing a finale, *always* tie up loose ends. *Never* introduce new ones.
This episode serves as evidence that more episodes were planned, but were never made due to the planned cancellation of the show. Sucks, we'll never have this great of a show for years to come. It deserved a proper finale.

the annoying thing is this episode with a little tweakage could have worked anywhere else between terra's ""death"" and the true finale where they put all the baddies on ice...

Because going by the show alone Homura doesn't strike me as all that controversial. Once she made the contract her only option was to keep trekking forward or despair and become a witch.
" I think it’s a nice cap to the “Terra” story."...HOW!? It makes no sense and resolves nothing! This episode being the finality ticked me off too. I have no idea what they were thinking, and it does indeed put a sour taste in my mouth, tainting the entire show.
It makes complete sense and resolves everything. Terra clearly wants to move on with her life now that she's made up for her crimes but Beast Boy wants to cling to the past by forcing her to become the girl he thought he knew. She won't let herself be forced back into a life of unhappiness and in a relationship where she can't be herself so she tells him that Things Change and the Girl he wants her to be is just a memory.
It caps off his character development from the rest of Season 5 brilliantly.
@@bunsmasterbunny Except it does not because we spend the entire episode with Beast Boy and the audience being told over and over that this is not Terra at all. If we find she IS Terra and has decided indeed to just be a normal girl and move on with her life, being that she was never cut out to be a hero in the first place despite her powers, then okay that makes sense, but that is never resolved. She could be a long lost twin for all we know, which also would make sense but make the entire episode a throw away. I get the idea they were going for, somethings change, somethings stay the same as life moves on, but frankly it feels like they were setting up for that message and never delivered it, as if this was a set-up for a two part episode, but the second half never came.

I wouldn't call "Things Change" an atrocity but it is frustrating. "Titans Forever"was a much better series finale.
To be fair, this was not actually meant to be the series finale. There was supposed to be more, but I think there ended up being huge disputes over producing and merchandising rights, and combined with the lower ratings of the fifth season as a whole, CN saw fit to pull the plug entirely. However, I do agree that this episode is a pretty bad season finale, so I ultimately understand why it’s the subject of this episode. At the very least, people should dislike certain things for the right reasons.

Big problem of this episode is also the fact just how strongly on the nose the Title is. Oh & do not forget that when you think about it the episode makes a strong case against change.
The episode should be titled "Things Change & you won't like it" sure the episode tries to go with the idea that change is inevitable so you have to accept it & move on However through the entire episode all the examples of change are set up as sth bad. Not even a hint to the idea that Sometimes things can change for the better. None of that. Most is just "Things change & you always loose something from that but deal with it" . Which might be the most Depressing end to a Long running kids Show ever.
I think only Young Justice had come close but that was cancelled early to actually come back with another season or more... Idk I kinda didn't get back to it

This seems like this episode was more intended to be followed up rather than being a conclusion.
I don't consider things change a bad episode, just an awkward cliffhanger (in which the idea was good, but no one knew that the show would be canceled), however, it definitely felt like a letdown from the previous two part epic finale (calling all titans and titans together). I didn't think as the monster as a flaw either, but I thought that the monster, Slade and Terra were kinda connected, the expectations for the 6th season were definitely high thanks to this episode, due to the circumstances, it would have been definitely better if it didn't exist and the finale was Titant Together.
One Piece is more..."pirate-adjacent."
One Piece is a fantasy story set in a world where the majority of the cast are pirates or hate pirates. saying 'its about pirates' is overly simplyfying what the actual story is.
yes it has pirates in it, but it ALSO has magical fruits that give superpowers to thsoe who eat it, cyborgs, cloud islands in the sky and MOTHERFUCKING DRAGONS!
Rather than being traditional pirates, they're just outlaws on water, Robin Hood style.

Probably not a super popular opinion but this is an episode of a cartoon that actually really stuck with me and I really loved. I know it wasn't super conclusive but I always got the sense that was kind of the point. The monster subplot for BB to run off to at the end kind of bridged the gap between Terra and BB's choices when all was said and done. Beast Boy still wanted to be a hero whereas with everything Terra had gone through she just wanted to live a normal life, and well, this caused things to change between them since they both couldn't be what the other wanted. I definitely interpreted as she was the real Terra just like, out of her secret identity and found her best way to move on was the try and put everything about the superhero life, including her best friend/lover behind.
I don't hate this episode, though i think it works better as a sort of epilogue.
The episode before this, where they defeat the brotherhood of evil and essentially form their own teen justice league might as well be the true series finale, so i think this episode was meant to be kind of a meta way for the creators to say goodbye, by showing that despite the changes (with changes possibly also referring to the show ending), the titans are still the titans and they'll continue fighting bad guys and more mysteries will arise.
Slade returning, a villain of the week being fought and the vague "here we go again" type of ending i think were all deliberate choices to contrast the theme of change, specially if you consider the last season at large.
And while it's true that the episode raises more questions than it answers, i feel it does end Beast Boy's own character arc in a satisfactory way, by allowing him to finally let go of what was essentially his biggest regret and maturing as a result. This whole season was focused around Beast Boy so having Terra be part of that arc in some way is probably something they wanted even if it was in such a short and confusing way.
My personal biggest gripe is that the return of slade, as well as the fact he knows about Terra, makes it weird that Beast Boy would just be like "yeah whatever", rather than suspect Slade will go after her again.
Its completely against everyones character Star not caring that one of her friends is back from the dead. Robin not caring about Slade and Terra both of whom have been proven very dangerous. Beastboy just giving up. Slade not killing the person who murdered him. Its all wrong.

History has shown that it's a bad idea to end a show on a cliffhanger in the assumption that that will cause the show to be renewed. Remember the show ALF?
@Sir Embrum49 The Great Moth Heck, the last episode of Sonic Boom, the latest Sonic cartoon, ended with a hook for a third season. Thanks to Christina Miller and her obsession with airing as many Toddler Titans reruns as humanely possible, a third season of Boom will probably never happen.
Keep in mind we didn't have internet dirt sheets and twitter in 2005. For the average kid, all they knew was this was never resolved and the movie didn't bring it up. The show was just there one day and gone the next.
I think that the message was loud and clear for those of us who watched it at the time, even among the fan community. It was supposed to be unsatisfying, the episode is dripping with subtext about uncertain future as well as the need to stay focused on moving forward. Not being stuck in the past, moving on despite regrets and mixed feelings... I get that it leaves a lot to be desired from a narrative standpoint, but I do firmly believe that the real message of the episode was in the subtext, and a sort of personal goodbye to longtime fans of the show.
People tend to overlook alot of bad episodes in this show when talking about it. A huge standout for me is that one where Brother Blood tears Cyborg to literal pieces but magically reforms with the power of the human spirit somehow. Absolutely some of the worst shit I've ever seen.

Actually there is a finally, you see there was a comic series that was printed during the run of the series that went on a little further (ironically, the comic was called teen titans go), and in the 51st we kinda got a conclusion to the terra story (not a really good one, but still a conclusion).

The polish version of the first episode aired on 8th of january 2005, few days before the premiere of season 4 in USA. My best bet is that the contract only included 4 seasons for some reason, even though they finished the polish version in 2007 and that's about a year after the end of the english season 5. That's just my guess as there are no official information whatsoever.

I thought I had heard somewhere that "The End" trilogy was supposed to be the finale (hence the name and arc), but afterwards, the creators were given the greenlight to make more episodes; so, they started to, and then the show just discontinued into oblivion. That was my take on it, anyway.
I just remember finding this episode somewhere online with my cousin, and we were so confused by this episode that we looked everywhere thinking there was an episode following it, and came up empty. We then figured out that this was the last one and were so bummed out (since this was a year or so after the show ended so we figured there'd be no continuation).

Yeah, the episode before this should have been the finale. The final shot of all the Titans getting ready to stop Dr. Light as he was robbing the bank was a perfect one to end on.

I see it as one of those things which had a message but failed to execute it which was for Beast Boy to move on. This reminds me of Ralph Breaks the Internet which also had a message of letting go of friends only to be told awkwardly.

I've heard that supposedly the show was cancelled because of how expensive the episodes were to make, but don't quote me on that.
I share not knowing this was a series final on first viewing Mr. Enter. According to Voice Actors, this episode was intentionally made to convey the message that life dose not always go your way. Which is not bad on itself, but was not done well here.

B. It’s just my head canon to deal with the shows ending, and what Slade did after he got his body back. That was my least favorite hanging plot line.

Oh I’ve been waiting for Mr. Enter to tear this episode apart for a loooong time.
In the scene where terra says “things change, and the girl you want me to be is just a memory”, (potentially fake) terra was (probably) saying if she were the same person, she was telling beast boy to move on because even though beast boy had the memory of terra, it was just a memory, and she (probably) isn’t the same as she used to be. She would have to do this in this situation because beast boy wasn’t listening to her saying she isn’t terra, and that’s why she talked about it as if there was a possibility that she was terra, while never knowing if she was terra or not.
This. Right here. Is why Teen Titans Go is so hated. If Teen Titans had a legitimate ending, or at least didn't close on a cliffhanger, there wouldn't have been such an uproar about Teen Titans Go. Because TTG does not resolve the Terra amnesia plotline.

Yeah this episode really hurts because it was unsatisfying for a finale. It doesn't even feel like a finale. It's why I wanted the series to continue because I wanted a true finale. Not this.

Steven Universe Change Your Mind left many questions unanswered, but it answered the most important questions and was an overall satisfying resolution.

D YellowMadness I didn’t say it was perfect by any means. But I think it was a good conclusion to the storyline. And keep in mind they are doing a season six so the show has plenty of time to explore White Diamond’s redemption and probable relapse.
Vulpes Ailurus the movie was a better finale
It was a story about growing up, moving forward, and accepting that there are things you can't change and questions that don't get answered in this life. Thematically, it was an appropriate ending to a series about adolescence.

This episode was season six episode one. When it was shown during "The summer of new", as the hosts said this is the first episode of a new up coming season. It was later retconned as the final episode when it was canned
For me the episode Things Change works better as an epilogue than a finale.

The thing with this episode is with some minor tweaks this could'be been an interesting finale, with a message of letting go that would'be been appropriate with the series finale of a popular show, but they fucked up the execution so badly 🤦🏽♂️

I think that the biggest issue of this ending is that it’s about accepting change, but terra was never a constant enough part of beast boys life that this makes sense. She was never a part of the status quo, or constant enough. If the plot was about say, Robin returning to gotham, than the theme of accepting change would fit way better here.
