The Future Humans | Low

- Опубліковано 20 вер 2022
- In Rick Remender’s Low, almost all of the future humans have migrated underwater and now all live in dome cities, due to the fact that the surface had become too hot for normal human habitation. This is due to the fact that the story is set billions of years in our future and the sun has expanded to a red giant. The protagonist of our story, Stel Caine, lives in the Dome City of Salus, with her husband and children. Using robotic probes she desperately searches for a new planet that can support human life. The Dome Cities themselves are crumbling. The filtration systems which keep them oxygenated are becoming continuously less efficient. The citizens of all the known cities know that they do not have long before none of the cities can support life.

Can you do one on "We Only Find Them When They're Dead"? It's a comic series about humans harvesting the corpses of gigantic gods in space, and covers a lot of things related to the need to find meaning, fate, and politics. I've only read the first few issues but I'm already hooked! (Also great drawing, coloring, and type styles as a bonus.) Otherwise love your work and keep doing what you do!!!!
Some other good ones are the Ancillary Trilogy (detailing the actions of the last body of a military ship), Blame! (A Japanese graphic novel aka manga set in a decaying megastructure that has long since forgotten its purpose), and Girls’ Last Tour (its about two of the last humans exploring a ruined city).
I can’t really explain what makes the Ancillary Trilogy (my nickname for Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword, and Ancillary Mercy) good without spoiling it, but let’s just say that the world is a MC in its own right and it goes places you might not expect.
I don’t have much to say about Blame!, but Girls’ Last Tour is really good, easily my second favorite piece of literature, right after Plura Magi Madoka Magica. Girls’ Last Tour is slow, it’s more like a post-apocalyptic slice of life than anything else. And that “post-“includes at least three, if not more apocalypses.
That sounds bloody good, i'ma check it out.
Wow that sounds so fking cool. The idea is genius
This sounds a lot like kill 6 billion demons
Sounds interesting. I'll check it out
If you’re ever looking for some unconventional scifi type books, “The Dogs of the Spires” is a good series to check out. The whole premise is that humans are extinct after some sort of apocalypse and highly intelligent dogs have taken over the ruins to build their own society. Lots of themes of repeating past mistakes, and the whole thing leans toward cosmic horror with a lot of the themes especially in later books. Would love to see you cover it since the worldbuilding is really unique and interesting!
DUST put out a short film (a little over 16 minutes long) called “Sunbelly”. It also deals with dogs taking over the world after humans foolishly destroy themselves.
C’mon man, we all know either cats or snapping turtles are going to take over. Snapping turtles can extract oxygen from water with their butts while frozen underwater.
Sounds a lot like the premise of Clifford D. Simak's _"City"._
It sounds like that one movie that came out a few years ago, called white god
Edit : white dog is what i originally thought it was called and i looked it up and it freaked me out lol
Hell yea dogs
LOW was so overlooked when it was coming out in single issues. It's one of my favorite Remender series for sure.
Agreed! But it works so much better as a graphic novel!
@@faizrabbani i own every single issue of this series and it took a long time and many city searches for them. there was something very special about waiting and wondering where this series was going to go. getting the single issues also made me go back and reread them because of the time gaps of the releases. one of the best science fiction series i have ever read along with the journey of the read that came with it.
The only plothole is how humanity was able to survive for that long
I'm so happy to see you covering LOW. It's one of the best series I've ever read. Rick Remender's story is spectacular, especially in the form of the constantly-optimistic Stel Caine. The art Greg Tocchini displays is truly art: beautiful, emotional, full of awe, wonder, and horror.
Anyone looking through the comments gets another recommendation to read LOW from me. It may be my favorite comic book series ever.
I have every issue. This series is so well written and beautifully drawn.
@@michaelkiggins3090 I have every issue as well. I also have most of the trades, but I have yet to get the hardcover versions.
Absolutely love LOW but Black Science edges it out imo.
@@Juel92 I need to read more of Black Science. Fantastic series.
Keep posting at this rate! So glad the channel has grown to include new sci-fi. Remeber when it was ideas of ice and fire. You have come a long way, glad I get to watch you progress so far. Peace!
This. He has introduced me to so many new sci fi projects. I also trust his takes on it so I know I'm getting something good
Aside from your excellent selection and wonderful commentary, you’ve single-handedly gotten me back into reading. I’m absolutely loving it. Somehow I found a copy of the killing star and it’s so haunting.
It's always a good day when Quinn uploads. Cheers lad, have a good one!
lol I heard "100% get low" as a clarion call to hit the dance floor 🤣
I would get low, but I’m getting old and my knees ain’t what they used to be. But I might pick up this graphic novel by Remender.
Year later, im white af but same haha
Low sounds quite interesting, graphically they look very nice too.
Thanks for the video Quinn.
Awesome, Quinn. Glad you're covering Low. After reading this book, I reread it again last year. The art, characters, world-building, and especially the family that cares deeply for one another are all quite enjoyable and memorable. In the first issue, Stel tries to save her loved ones from the borders. Armed with a spear gun, she snarls at them, "Get the hell away from my family!" Shades of Ellen Ripley, albeit not as successful. It was this family love, and not her, um, bare assets, that made me want to read the whole story ... and want more.
Quinn has enough ideas for at least several lifetimes.
Recently got 'em. Very excited to continue the story!
Props for doing workout lifting those volumes on camera😅
Low is a fantastic series with beautiful art, incredible characters and rich thematic storytelling. I agree everyone should do themselves a favor and get this series.
This guy makes top tier content, Deserves all the support available.
bought this because of you. Same with the three body problem series which I'm currently finishing, but this is next. Keep up the good work Quinn.
I loved LOW! I kept seeing it on your bookshelf in other videos and was hoping you'd do a video on it. Masterpiece indeed.
Looks amazing. Can't wait to read it. I always find new books and comics on your channel. Keep up the amazing work. 😁
I love this comic series so much! Hyped to see a video on it, especially by you 🤩
It's incredible how much more sci fi I have read since I discovered your channel. I have just finished three body problems and the first three of Dune! Don't stop sending them!
Glad to see you covering LOW! I remember reading this when it first came out! Remenders sci-fi series always have this sort of tragic bleakness interspersed with small glimmers of hope to them, you can definitely also see it in his work on Fear Agent, Black Science and Tokyo Ghost.
What a great morning - not only does this book sound awesome, they have it at my library.
I love your channel so much man. Litterally keeps my insomnia at bay.
Ok this looks really interesting and I vibe with the art-style, might have to give this one a try! :)
Love the way you are getting into all these different works of SF - I hope you'll consider making some content about Ursula K. LeGuin's SF one day, since you did for Octavia E. Butler. ;)
If you want to give it a try, skip volume 1, it is god awful. I don't know about the rest, I gave it away and never went back.
I wish you had touched on the personal relationship Remender has with this series. It’s part of his work through his depression, why it is so hopeful and optimistic. It’s a very personal story about overcoming the crushing weight of one’s own darkness and is one of the most beautiful things about the series.
You should also cover his other favorite of mine, Black Science. Kinda the opposite, he leans into the darkness with that series, but it is so wildly creative and cool as hell.
I love this series! Thank you for doing this video!!
That’s crazy. A buddy of mine had just talked with me about this, and it is his favorite, and he isn’t a diehard Science Fiction nut like I am. Going to share this with him. You are on top of the science fiction game, my man.
Great video! Your recommendations have never failed me so I’ll definitely check out Low.
Dude I love your opening song, please never change it!
Love this channel and these recaps. Ever consider doing an audio book series? I would love to listen to these books then hear your commentary after.
Fantastic comic. Greg Tochinni is an incredible artist, his gesture drawing is gorgeous.
Outstanding video. I'm going to look for this.
Your music intro never fails to give me a chill.
I am headed to the library Thursday , l hope that they have this there... thank you , you always keep me updated on good reading .
I knew this sounded familiar!! I have the first volume at home! I haven’t been able to find the second volume, but I’m going to have to renew the search for it now. I can’t believe I forgot about it.
Oh, it's a whole series, not just one book?
just got volume 1 in the mail, very very excited. thank you quinn!
As soon I saw Low on your shelf I knew it was going to happen in these wonderful eons of contemplation
Yes! Please bring more attention to these under the radar gems. Low is a masterpiece!
Ah! I had almost forgotten about Low! Such an awesome story and depicted sooo cool!
I love the way Rick Remender tackles scifi. Always fun and adventurous. Also a big fan of Fear Agent.
I read this one, the writer notes she was inspired by this after battling depression and at the time i was too so it was pretty inspiring
You sold me! I'm getting this :) I am a major fan of world building because I always ask those questions that stories often hint at but never mention. It kind of drives me crazy when I can't ever find out why something is or that the story I'm reading is all of what is there for that realm created by it.
This sounds awesome!! Definitely gona check it out.
This had one of the best endings a series ever did. Truly beautiful books.
ohh i didnt know it ended, I only read through probably the first 2 trades worth of single issues. This is good to know that i wont have to pour iniinite money into for a conclusion! ty
As much as I loved this comic, I'm not too keen on the ending
This was a really cool video, I for one would appreciate more vids in the future about graphic novels and comics as it's an area of fiction I'm not really familiar with but would like to learn more about!
Couldn’t agree more. One of my all time favorite comic series!
My man. You got the best damn channel I swear.
That's pretty cool I never heard of Low. I saw saga on your shelf that's a great comic.
Low is fantastic. Glad to see it getting some love.
Man, I devoured both those HCs! Great series.
I love the art and the covers look amaziong this would be cool just to have on a shelf tbh - i want t shirt lol
Great stuff as always! 🤓😎👍
Shangri-La & Low were the two comics I used to follow along back in the day chapter by chapter when I'd get an internet connection coming home from school. Definitely an incredible read.
thanks for the videos, great stuff as always
PLEASE DO MORE OF THIS BOOK ....I am dyslexic and this helps alot
thank you so much for putting me onto great sci-fi i haven’t heard of!
Yes! I'm glad to see you covering LOW, I really loved that comic series. Do you think you'll cover Black Science as well, it's also a Rick Remender series.
I always take your opinions seriously.
same
You definitely have an insight.
Yeah Quinn is a proper connoisseur. Always worth hearing his take.
I agree, this guy like "you should read this I highly recommend it" and I'm like "wellp guess I have something new to read" 😅
I've thought about these times and that migrating out into the Sol system would make sense. Many moons should change and perhaps even be habitable.
For the dome race there would be water worlds to inhabit, at least buying time.
I'll be picking this set up to see what ideas they go through. It looks good!
Nicely done!
Can you complete 3 body problem . Your explanation was really good.
i remember borowing it in highschool. it motivated me to draw and the story is great.
I want to cover you in gold
I started reading this several years ago and have been driven mad looking for it since then
Thanks for the recommendation, I hope your graphic novel takes off like crazy.
I could listen to you narrate all day!
Incredible Video!!
This sounds really cool! I might wanna get this book!
Hey Quinn now that you're in a row, have you considered covering Stephen King's Dark Tower saga? For me it's the ultimate cosmic horror fantasy setting
Not a complaint...I just wish your videos were longer cause i love love your content.. Loved your recent video on the trisolorians.
Low is awesome and so are your videos.
Very interesting, thanks for reviewing it. 👍
Never heard of this before- awesome
Love the intro music. Sounds mysterious and syfy
I really enjoy non 3 body content because i havent finished book 2 yet.
Awesome, there's nowhere near enough material on YT about this comic series. It caught my attention a while back while reading publisher brochure(it's Nonstopcomics in my country), and I do not regret trying it out. Great story and art through and through, although Remeder took way too many shortcuts with the finale, it is literally "WTF just happened?"
Love this channel
A billion years and all we managed to do is go deep diving? Nah, we are destined for greater things in far far far less time
Damm, with the way it sounds. The burnt are pretty relatable.
Reminds me of how, rich people are currently prepping for end times, even shock collars for their workers to keep them in line,
So the idea of that, prepper mindset, sorta working but also excluding them from a change that humans can actually endure, making them stagnant in evolution, fascinating
This looks fire! Will be getting it
Very interesting channel. Just found you, gonna delve in
I love your theme music. It reminds me of Space 1999, for some reason.
thank you for this great suggestion
Love you videos, thanks for all the content! I'd love to see one with your thoughts on Spin by Robert Charles Wilson - great concept sci-fi along with fantastic storytelling. 👍
I remember borrowing the first volume from the library but never got into it. Gotta give it another chance.
Why did humans only started to mutate and evolve after a billion years ? For reference, the Cambrian explosion was half a billion years ago, and our ancestors from then were tiny worm like "not quite yet" vertebrates. In the book's setting it's been twice as long and humans are almost, if not entirely the same ? Do they explain it in the book ?
Great comic, loved it
I know you focus on SciFi on the channel. I just finished Remender’s Deadly Class and it’s basically my personality right now. 10/10 recommend.
Once again, ordered the hard copy (I find it tough to appreciate graphic content on my Kindle 🤨) before the end of the video. Your recommendations carry significant weight here.
Low: Hope is all that matters
Warhemmer: Are you sure you want to do that?
One series I would love to her talked about on this channel would be "The second apocalypse" from R- Scott Baker. I can't really describe the series without spoiling it but immagine a cross between Dune and the Silmarilion.
Would love to see more lore videos about this, since I really liked its worldbuilding despite finding the story to be very difficult to access and having stopped reading because of this
This man should get from publishers some publicity money!
All my recent books have been Quinn's recommendation.
Really APPRECIATE how you tirelessly introduce us to fantastic Sci Fi lit we may not be familiar with.
Currently reading Blindsight and will find a way to source Low (3rd world country problems, hehe).
Keep up the great work. THANKS!!
*Low* is incredible and while reading it I kept thinking the story could truly be adapted but the cash it would take would be absurd; if only Amazon had spent their money on this! I still think about _Stel_ and her oddessy, her family, and other characters she met along the way. Last but not least finishing the story was like getting a reward at the end of a long journey.
Cool, new reading material.
I love your channel
Ever since I’ve gotten into DUNE (thanks to Quinn’s Ideas) I’m now fascinated with the concept of Distant Future or Far Future Sci-Fi. While DUNE is set tens of thousands of years in our future, this LOW is set BILLIONS of years in our future- now THAT is mind boggling! What a great idea this Rick fella came up with! A society living with the threat of our Sun becoming a Red Giant that will ultimately engulf Earth! And having the Burnt be the leftover land dwellers and everyone else living in underwater dome-cities… and then there’s also Vampiric Mermaids?!? Talk about some serious World Building! This I gotta check out!
"Absolutely 100% get Low" caught me off guard 😂
Agreed, Rick is one of the best out there. Out of curiosity, have you read his run on Uncanny X-Force? It probably my favorite of his.
Thank you!
