  • Because of the potential size of the future, the most important thing about our actions today might be their impact on future generations. This simple-sounding idea has some surprising moral implications: 80000hours.org/kurzgesagt-las...

The future of humanity seems insecure. Rapid climate change, political division, our greed and failings make it hard to look at our species with a lot of optimism and so many people think our end is in sight. But humans always thought they lived in the end times. Every generation assumes they’re important enough to witness the apocalypse and then life just goes on.
This is a problem because it leads to short term thinking and prevents us from creating the best world for ourselves and our descendants. What makes this worse is that we actually may live at an extremely critical moment in human history. To understand why, let us look at the temporal window of humanity and ask:
When will the last human be born and how many people will there ever be?

HUGE announcement: we are launching Kurzgesagt in six more languages! Arabic, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Hindi, Japanese and Korean, on top of our English, German and Spanish channels: linktr.ee/kgs_international
This is where we need YOUR help. It takes us a lot of time, effort and yes, money to translate our videos properly and run so many channels - so to make this sustainable, please help us spread the word! If you are a native in one of these languages, share our videos on social media and tell your friends and family - make people in your native language aware that it exists. Thanks so much for your support!

    • @sonkeschmidt2027
      @sonkeschmidt2027 Рік тому +282

Technically that's true but equally more problems mean more solutions.
The interesting bit is to get the solutions across. A whale has many many more cells than a human, yet a human has a very different experience because of the way the cells are communicating with each other. Existence exists because it can and it will create everything that is possible. And everything is possible infinity.
What's relevant to us right now is how we communicate with each other because that is what shapes our experience and makes the difference between a shitty and a great experience. It is all about how we connect. With ourselves, our humanity, with earth, with the universe, with everything. Limits are finite and therefore inherently temporary. So that what truly is is unlimited and never ending. And if we recognise ourselves in that, we are too =)

Kurgestagt has realized that people who have been slain by the apathy sword are the people that wanted to help the future. The apathy sword is a term I have invented for the way you try to stop people by convincing them everything is awful and hopeless. If you cant see it, then you cant fight it. In politics its called wedging.
Theyre trying to form a shield of science and perspective. Something to fight the invisible sword. Perspective.
*Its not optimism.* Perspective is everything. Here is an example:
Life has been trapped on this sphere because of its gravity well forever. The dinosaurs had some absurd amount of time to try to evolve out of it, and no one did anything. Life was essentially doomed. Until Humans. We are lifes hope to escape this prison. We are its champions.
And under that perspective, you basically cant go wrong unless you've eliminated all life. Even destroying the earth but getting some life off it could be considered a victory of humanity.
Theyre just trying to help people see things differently, because people have been taught everythings awful, and it really can be argued against.

Hi, I watched your video about CRISPR and „the power of genetics“ a few years ago when I was still in High-school in 10th grade. I found it after my biology teacher brought a paper about the usage of CRISPR in terms of a therapy for HIV. It was just stunning and fascinating to me because HIV was like a big deal of a disease and this article was basically a huge step in the direction of a „cure“. It fascinated me so much that I started searching and reading about it at home until I saw this wonderful and inspiring video. I just got straight goosebumps when I saw it for the first time.
Now I‘m studying molecular biotechnology and molecular medicine as a main course at university and last week I got the opportunity to work with CRISPR in the lab myself. Couldn’t be more proud and thankful because this wouldn’t have been if I didn’t watch your video back in high school.

Leaving earth isn't even that difficult either, assuming we become serious about energy development and deployment using nuclear power. We are already positioned for starting colonies on Mars and the moon, with the right planning we can build a interplanetary communications and resource management system using specialized space stations, robotic systems, mining tools, magnetic rail slingshots on low gravity moons / worlds, development of megastructures like the stellar engine or Dyson sphere... there is so much potential for our people.

This is why I often find myself wondering about the mystery of the far future with a touch of melancholy.
So many things I will never get to see, so many things that we can only dream about now being mundane reality in the future.
But also with optimism: we got so far because of the ones that came before us. Through their sacrifice and hard work we went from, as the video so eloquently put it, "worshipping the moon, to walking on it". Look at all the things we have acomplished together as the human race, and all the things we've built, all the technology that sometimes is nearly indistinguishable from magic, and then just imagine the things we will create in the far future. I get shivers just thinking about it.
My only wish is to maybe someday be reborn again somehow, to see it all, or at least some of it. But for now all we can do is make the most of what we have now while leaving another stepping stone in our history on which future humans can step on to go even further than any one of us alive today could ever dream of going. ❤️

Well said and dreamt about. I have the same sentiments, and lustful imagination on what we may become, and what the future looks like.
I often ask people "if u could briefly visit the future or past what would u pick? and what time period?"
Personally I choose the year 3000. This wouldn't be so unrecognizable all things considered and would give a sense of where we are headed.

One of the best things about the future is that we can all take our own small role in shaping it here and now.
I feel very similarly to you. It’s melancholy indeed knowing that we may never see the long term fruits of our labor. I say, that’s all the more reason to make the best of the present!
