This is one of the only known films of Marshal South and his family, taken in 1947 at their home, Yaquitepec, on Ghost Mountain, in what is now Anza Borrego Desert State Park. The film is narrated by Rider South, eldest of the children. The film was acquired many years ago by Diana Lindsay, and was subsequently donated to the ABDSP archives. I produced the recording of the narration in 2002 (or thereabouts), at a time when this was the only known film of the South family. I recently was able to borrow the film to make a high-quality scan of it using my Moviestuff Retroscan Universal film scanner. This version is far better than the previous transfer that was made of the film. Thanks to Diana Lindsay and ABDSP for helping make this film transfer possible! My found films are generally available for use in your video projects. For non-commercial use, I simply require a credit and a link back to the original video on my UA-cam channel. For commercial use, we can discuss an appropriate licensing fee based on your budget. In either case, please email me at phix@optigan.com with your project proposal.

RIP Rider South. He passed away in Silver City on Feb. 2nd, 2016. I'm glad he at least got to visit his family's homestead one last time before passing on.

My goodness, I was searching for Rider South on the internet because I'd become interested in finding out about Lucile Iverson South who was Rider South's wife. By a few coincidences involving a doll and a book about Lucile Iverson, then a beautiful framed photograph of Lucile as a child, and then finding another copy of the book today, I became interested in finding out more about the beautiful lady who Mr. South had been married to. When I discovered that he was living in Silver City, the town I came to live in 11 yrs ago, I thought I might get even to tell him in person about these happy coincidences ! To my dismay, I found out that Mr.Rider had passed away just about a year ago, on Feb .2, 2016. I now see that he had quite an interesting life also.

I didn't realize that Rider South had passed away. I've been reading the Ghost Mountain Chronicles (which I bought a couple of years ago in Borrego Springs) and became fascinated. I do want to visit the site soon - I've been to Anza Borrego park many times but only recently became away of Marshal South. Whatever happened to Lucile?

The Anzo Borrego Desert down in SD is a great place to camp if you like camping and it's indeed just as gorgeous as this film portrays it to be.

Beautiful documentation, this family looks to be Native American mixed with European.

According to the book, Marshal South (AKA Roy Richards) was born in Australia. Tanya was born in Ukraine. I'm 1/16 Lakota Sioux and I look about as native American as Elizabeth Warren

If only there had been reality TV back then......
Unlike Bear Grylls, the Souths actually slept in the wilderness.

hi, sorry, you're wrong. first off, this isn't video- it's film. second, color film was very common at that time. anyone with an interest in old home movies is well aware of this. i personally have hundreds of color home movies from that era, in 8mm as well as 16mm format.

no need to apologize. i am not the thin skinned type, like so many, today. If i am wrong, i am wrong.
before i was born, but i just do not recall it being that readily available. Over and Out.
