really like this host. seems like a genuinely nice guy who appreciates the japanese culture. i'm sure the japanese appreciate him knowing their language. thank you for your work, John.
Dear John, my family and I are really enjoying the latest run of Only in Japan so far, please keep up the good work. We love the wide range of subjects explored too!
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN When you said Hiroshima is famous for, i was sure you were going to mention something about being nuked, but a-bomb dome, i laughed, im sorry
This really should be showed on National TV. You'll never know whom you'll inspire John :-)! I'm even asking myself why I'm in the house and not travelling already lol...and I really want to o.o
Next episode coming next week! TOKYO'S MONSTER GYOZA CHALLENGE: The Largest Dumpling in the World Kai and I go over Japan's challenge eating and the concept of "mottainai" which is a big part of Japanese culture. Of course, I try to eat the mother of all gyoza, too! Photos from the shoot on Facebook: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv -John
Why do you not have a television series? I've been watching all your videos and you make me want to visit Japan so bad. Japan has never been on my travel list, now it is. Keep up the great work, your videos are very entertaining to watch.
Thank you for watching the show, Sand Man ! Well, thought of putting it at first, but all of a sudden the exchange rate changed rapidly, while around 2013, 1$=90yen. 2014 1$=100yen, 2015 1$=120yen, so it was pretty difficult to predict what the equivalent is! Surely more difficult to predict what it will be next year - WAORYU staff
Spent the last hour after watching this trying to find a restaurant in Melbourne that makes Okonomiyaki like this, but I think we only have the Osaka style here. Now I'm just sad and hungry!
Daniel B If you can find the sauce, you're most of the way there! The recipe for the Osaka version is quite easy. Many Asian stores have the sauce. You may even be able to get the nori seaweed flakes and dried fish flakes mail order! Usually takes about 10 min to make one on a fry pan :) Maybe you'll have people lining up outside your door when the heavenly smell hits the air! -John
ONLY in JAPAN just want to say, I love how you run your channel. You handle the haters gracefully as well as always having fun, engaging content that is also respectful.
amen bruh. I've been fiending for some Hiroshima style okonomiyaki ever since I tried it right there at the mura in 2017. It's taken many disappointing (but still decent) meals to learn that Hiroshima does okonomiyaki their own special way
This looks delicious! I hope to go to Japan one day! haha i love the okonomiyaki you made! It looked great! I love all your videos and can't wait for more to come.
YESSSSSSSSS! NEW VID! THANK YOU! THIS SERIOUSLY MOTIVATES ME TO CONTINUE LEARNING JAPANESE WHEN I WANT TO GIVE UP! NEVER STOP MAKING YOUR AWESOME VIDEOS! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!
mjbitz I think it may be as simple as similarities between African languages and Japanese in terms of pronunciation, etc.Often on Japanese television for example, there will be an African-American guy on a game show or whatever and he will speak immaculate Japanese.
I LOVE Japan! I was there in the USAF for 4 years, and I went back to visit Tokyo for 10 days in 2010. I graduated from Film/TV school (A trade school, not University), and personally would love to do things like this. Your works are top notch.
SLACKPLAN9 Thank you for watching! It's great to know more candidates aiming for Film/TV! Please also check out some of John's new episodes as well! -WAORYU staff
Thank you for the nice comment, drawing manga! Morocco is an awesome place! Glad the show is watched over there too :) I'm producing the next show this week and hope it's available in a couple of weeks. -John
That looked really good :) And you made it quite nice with a little help ;D I have watched few of your videos and i must say that these have been good. And big plus for the subtitles.
Thank you, can pinar! I hope every episode can hold its own. I'm editing the next episode now ... a Japanese eating challenege with the world's largest gyoza dumpling! Should be out shortly. I posted some photos on the Facebook page: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv -John
We try an eating challenge in the next episode -- the world's biggest gyoza! lol Editing it now. I posted some photos on our Facebook page: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv Thank you Dyjonn! -John
You can make okonomiyaki sauce, using ketchup, honey, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Came out tangy and great! I'm having it on a "Okonomiyaki Omelette" pancake made using just 4 bacon strips made into a ring, and green onions & egg in the center. Tastes great! =3
i discovered ur a little too late. but thank god i found it . thanks john for every video and hope i can meet you in real life when i travel the world.
I believe it was made with leftover of batter, seafood and cabbage only after the war. I used to live in Hiroshima and this is what someone told me way back in 1999. That's a good questions and I'll research it when I go back! -John
John the Bizarre Food's host had this on this week. You are correct. People didn't have a lot to eat after the war so the Chef's used table scraps and came up with Okonomiyaki, a pizza, omelet, pancake all in one! We are moving to Japan in July! So Excited.
I am chandramouli. I travelled Hiroshima during yr 2000 & tasted many Japanese food. One of my favourate food okonomiya with.chicken was very tasty. kudos to.japanese food.
Thank you, Sakura! It should be out soon. I'm editing it right now. I post updates here: facebook.com/onlyinjapantv can't wait to film the next one!! -John
Awesome!! The owner of Shinchan is in a lot of photos from viewers of the show! A viewer sent me a photo with him in January. He changed his hair! (Really a very nice guy who let me film this with him. He didn't have to do that.) Love the feedback. THANK YOU!! -John
Of all the fantastic, wonderful dishes of Japan my favorite by far is the Hiroshima version of okonomiyaki. Aside from sushi it should be the national dish of a wonderful nation. I lived in San Francisco for 25 years and have found only one restaurant that sold anything similar to the dish. At this restaurant in Japantown it was known as 'modern yaki.' A great dish indeed but nothing near the the gem of a meal I had in Japan so many years ago. Thanks for posting this.
I love how educational all of your videos are and its so cool u got a cooking lesson with a chef that's so coo.l great channel!!! You make me wanna go on vacation in japan. :)
We have an okonomiyaki restaurant in Toronto which has been in continuous operation since 1978. However, now that I see how they make okonomiyaki in Hiroshima I think the ones we get in Toronto have lost something in translation; they're not quite so complicated in their construction. I swear I could almost smell how good they were in this video.
Marc Goodman The "Okonomi House"? If this is it, I looked at the photo and....well, this may be the Osaka style Okonomiyaki but looks pretty with a lot of sauce! It seems like people like the Teriyaki Chicken more ... LOL -WAORYU staff
Yes, you are correct, it is the "Okonomi House". It's in a great location near the downtown campus of the University of Toronto and is physically located in a building housing graduate students and their families. Good food at a reasonable price since 1978! WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN
Hiroshima gals are amazing! You found a good one for sure if she's taking you to okonomiyaki places -- it's soooo good!! Thank you!! You know it's not the easiest flip ;) -John
Yes! The Hiroshima version is definitely packed with good stuff! So many different varieties too. Vegetarians can also get one without any meat on request. Me? Load it up with seafood! Hiroshima's is the best. -John

Woah! The Crunch Wrap! Like it :) I'd never had anything like this okonomiyaki before coming to Hiroshima so I'm happy to have been able to share the experience. -John
