If you ever use pastel pencils, what brand would you recommend?
Thank you for this super video. Is there a similar Senelier (or other brand) sanded paper that would accept water for an underpainting?
Thank you so much. A brand of pastel surface that I love for creating wet techniques along with a Pastel is called Pastelmat. It comes in various colors, and it really takes a lot of layers. I can create an underpainting of Watercolor, Gouache, Acrylic, or even a light coat of oil paint prior to pastel painting.
The sanded ones are uart 400 grit, lux archival, and paste premier. I love the first two and yes they take water and alcohol wash.

I am curious whether the round or square shaped pastels are better for an intermediate level artist who has been away from it for a while. Should I buy both. I am travelling so need to limit my stuff.
That’s a great question, and I’m thinking that if you’re limited in the amount of pastels you can take with you, round pastels may be better because they take up less space typically and you can get a better variety of mark making techniques with them. Have fun!

Will this work with oil pastels?
It should work with oil pastels, but I’m not sure if you can get the same amount of layering. Worth a try though.

How do you preserve the paintings from smudges?
Hi @paulinatomczak8874, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image.
To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting.
