I love how when Columbo starts rambling on about his "disproved" theory about how Roger could have set up the murder, Logan clearly catches onto where he's going with this almost immediately and just starts glaring at Roger. And then the two of them just end up calmly watching him when he's on the floor of the cable car whimpering and frantically trying to find the "rigged" cigar.

@@Thrifty032781 From the looks of it, Logan was not in the know. The look on his face makes it seem to me that he slowly catches on where Columbo is going with this. Also mind how he asks Columbo where he got the box from, something he would have known if Columbo had explained it to him beforehand.
It's impressive how quickly he catches on. Even for Columbo, the victim is rarely that quick on the uptake. An impressive fellow.
I love how Columbo's expression at the end is basically "I think I may have gone too far."
Most Columbo villains usually go quietly, are shocked/angry/relieved, and/or express respect. Here, the villain just goes nuts. Columbo definitely would not have expected this kind of reaction.
They cut the part where he give Columbo his prized award medallion, acknowledging him as his better.

I loved that psychotic laugh at the end. A colossal relief at the realization that he just narrowly escaped getting blown up to pieces mixed with the distress and terror of getting caught.
You mean realization he did not narrowly escape after all, and was made a fool of.
But he hasn't confessed.

A very memorable ending. Roddy McDowall did a wonderful job showing his growing panic over the cigar box.
I love Roddy McDowell when he plays a villain; especially when he gets caught.
He was so different than the other Murderers, loved this episode for how he was always the clown and never took things seriously....In the end his manic laugh/cry just showed his despair at being caught out. Love it!!
@@gunitpuri Maybe its also relieve since he thought just a second ago that he was going to die and figured that getting arrested for murder is preferable to getting blown to bits.

I love how Columbo simultaneously piles on the pressure on two fronts. Whilst Roger's methods and motives are outlined in detail, making him nervous that he's about to be prosecuted for the murder of his uncle, that pales into insignificance as compared to his fear that he's about to be blown to smithereens by the high explosive cigar tube that he rigged.
The most disturbing about riding in a cable car is looking down and seeing the remains of earlier cable cars.
Come on. These cable cars only fall down two, three times a year. No need to panic.

Only people who have seen columbo detect would know that. There is one where his commissioner is the perp that maybe should have known of columbo's antics ..but most of the time they have never met him before.

I love how he hangs the 'genius badge' (I know that's not the name for it but the real name escapes me at the moment) around Columbo's neck as he utterly loses his cool. I always loved this ending.
It was a phi beta kappa chain. And he was extremely proud of it. And giving it to columbo He acknowledged that Colombo was smarter than he was

My favorite villain, I love how throughout the rest of the episode he seems ones step ahead of Colombo and is the only one who doesn’t get caught up it Columbo’s usual Schtick, its like for most of it he’s the one making Columbo uncomfortable by following him around everywhere, instead of the other way around.

I was scared he was gonna jump after giving his necklace to Columbo.
That unhinged laugh hinted at self-directed mayhem...
I suspect if it was made today, that would have the ending.
A terrific ending where the Lieutenant has the guy in such a panic that he finally gives in...keep em coming as they are well worth watching 👀
Something to appreciate, that I've not seen many mention. Is how the camera work is set up. With some parts of it being so frantically cut, almost as if viewing the scene from Roger's own eyes. Trying to find an escape, or just panicking and keeping his eyes on the mountains or the ride to keep calm. Then when he finally snaps, the wide shot reveals how claustrophobic the cabin feels for Roger. He's stuck in there, thinking Columbo picked up the rigged cigars and they're close to explode. When he's thinking about the explosives, it goes back to the fast cuts. As he begins to panic for the explosion about to "set off". Then finally, after it all, as he's looking for the rigged cigar, after he reveals himself to Columbo. We get an over the shoulder look. From Columbo and Logan's perspective, looking down on Roger as he finally exposes himself. Looking ultimately pathetic, and cowardly.
Did you notice when the camera was facing Roddy the door is closed, when it was facing Peter and William the door is open.
I spotted that too. I don't think there's ever been a TV show or movie longer than 3 minutes without some or other continuity error.

Just watched this episode for the first time. Most of the episode is only moderately satisfying but this was a marvellously tense ending; like something out of a Hitchcock movie.

Yes, you're right, with the cable car serving as a massive, spider web. Very Hitchcock, and you feel his panic.
And Anne Francis looks like a million bucks!
Roddy was great in this scene
It's very Hitchcockian because he laid this out once as the difference between shock and tension:
Film a scene where two people have a five-minute conversation. Then, at the end, there's an explosion. You've given the audience five minutes of tedium followed by five seconds of shock.
Now, set up the same scene, the same conversation, but open it with a shot of the bomb underneath the table. Now you have five full minutes of building tension with the audience.
Falk, Windom, and McDowell---three first rate actors.
Which is why it’s worth watching. Not the best episode of the series, but such a splendid cast. James Gregory is also a standout.

@@matiprofe3634 - McDowell was OK, but I don’t think he was in the same class as Falk and Windom. McDowell was pretty good in Planet of the Apes, but even then he never had to show a lot of range.
William Windom knocked it out of the park in The Doomsday Machine, and Falk was always convincing in his roles.

I loved this scene. The killer had to decide whether to incriminate himself or get blown up. A unique ending.
An underrated Columbo outing with a fantastic 'gotcha".

I love Mr Logan's look at around 5:40 as he slowly realizes what Columbo is doing here.
Roddy Mcdowell lost his MIND in this scene. Columbo is a BEAST! "What's upsetting you?" He slyly asks? You can feel the tension in both the cable and the character. I guess it's called suspense for a reason. A Metaphor for the suspension cable that lifted the truth out of the murderer.
One of my favorite endings ever...Roger was about to implode, he really played this part. That he was so condescending and hilarious at the same time had me rolling😅🫶🏾

I was in one recently and didn't find it that enjoyable. (Going down was much easier.) Fortunately, there was no way anyone could open the door from the inside.
This episode doesn't get much attention. It's a very enjoyable episode.
Most Columbo episodes from the 1970s are enjoyable. But this is definitely a lower echelon Columbo.

This episode was hastily written after the network demanded one more episode was made which I think is why it rarely gets repeated. There was a lot of resistance to do it from everyone involved. But whatever one thinks of the episode, no one can deny that this ending is one of the very best

I haven't seen it in a long time, but if an episode featuring Roddy McDowall and William Windom wasn't great, that has to be on the writers because they're GREAT actors. I sure love this ending! Roddy McDowall could do anything but was particularly good at playing a villain who's losing control.
I love how he fooled the suspect into thinking he brought a bomb on the cable car.

A rare ending where Columbo doesn’t confront the murderer by explaining what the smoking gun evidence is nor does he formally arrest this person.
Colombo must’ve been a heck of a card player
While I like the scenes where Columbo proves who’s the killer, there’s two other things that go on in columbo episodes that I love. They don’t both happen in every episode, but it’s often enough that I love the show for it.
- the moment Colombo figures out who the killer is. He may not have proof of it - yet, but he knows who he needs to focus on.
- the moment Columbo gets what he needs to prove it. It’s not something he can take to court, but he can take it to the killer and convince the killer into making a mistake that proves he dun it.

The shows arn’t a typical who-dun-it. They’re a how-catch-em. Well acted, with subtle clues put there by the actors from the start, which reveal the killer… but knowing who done it and proving it are different things. And spotting those early tells? Fun. I wish more mystery shows followed this style, with even just half the skill.
This scene really gives me an insight into Columbo's character. Considering how unstable the murderer is, Columbo is as cool as a cucumber and hard as nails. I mean he could have potentially gotten thrown out of that thing, but he was in total control and even lit up a cigar as relaxed as a cow in India.
Best detective series ever made, can’t stop watching them
This is sensational dialogue. I can't imagine how many takes they did to get the mood from player to player and line to line just right.
Columbo's playing tennis with the two men in one court and himself in the other.
One of the first episodes I saw, and one of my favourite endings - although first time I saw it I half expected the murderer to jump from the cable car when he realised the game was up.

I was seeing "Where Eagles Dare" in my mind - aerial tram on the one hand combined with a known guilty perp presented with the evidence and invited to jump from an open airplane door - only thing that I was unsure about was that this was a Columbo ...
I was surprised that the doors could be manually opened while the cable car was in motion above the crags. Nowadays that would not likely be the case for stricter safety reasons.
Notice near the end when he's patting Columbo's face the doors are closed again. Continuity error.
Don’t forget about the black tape on the box…
It would've been funny if Columbo had looked off camera and barked, "Officer!", and a uniformed cop somehow shows up in the cable car .... 😏
Lots to say about this scene in terms of writing and acting, but you have to give some praise to the editing. This is a fantastic example of how to use fast cuts to build tension.
A cable car with the door open hundreds of feet above a rocky ground. A desperate criminal who Columbo is making unhinged and might potentially try to wrestle the man who is getting ready to send him to jail for a very long time. I’m not sure Colombo thought this through to the end.
There was never any real danger to the desperate criminal as he understood that Columbo episodes always end free of violence.
Could have jumped if he wanted to avoid prison but none of the Columbo killers ever do that.
that's why he brought another man. the suspect was a lanklet anyway.

Yeah he mentioned his fear of heights in the Johnny Cash episode Swan Song. He said to an air plane guy investigating a crash that he "didn't even like being this tall." LOL which is funny since he's not all that tall. I'm old and remember that line well ( I prolly saw the episode as a pre teen? ) and I use that line all the time and virtually No one knows where I stole it from. Genius! LOL LOL LOL.

I think Richard Basehart's meltdown is perhaps creepier.

If you love Roddy McDowell you have to see him in Legend of Hell House. One of my all time favorite movies. Made right around the same time as this.

@@precbsfender -- thank you. I didn't think it was Squaw Valley because the car there goes up over a sheer rock face before reaching the top of the ride where the Olympic Museum is, but the otherwise spectacular scenery is quite similar.
my only problem with columbo is why couldnt he have seasons, cant get enough of this brilliant show, i really watches episodes nightly
What would have capped this scene off perfectly, is Roddy putting the necklace on Columbo, cackling maniacally... and walking out the open door to his death.
The continuity of the door being open in one angle and closed in the other angle and then cutting between them was driving me bonkers, but I think it was mostly because in every shot with the door open I was tense that he was going to jump, or even just fall out 😬
Or chuck Columbo out and ruin the next season.

The way how Roger acted when he saw the cigar box looked similar to his fake cigar (bomb) box,
is the same way how I would feel if I had to control a commercial aircraft with passengers inside.
McDowell is, in my humble opinion absolutely excellent and really elevates the episode which also in my opinion is otherwise not one of the better ones. This ending is one of the greatest Columbo gotcha’s of all the episodes.
William Link, one of the creators of the Columbo series, thought Roddy did a terrific job in this role.

Hey it's William windom, he was also in the very first columbo, played semi regular character, seth hazlett, in murder she wrote and was in the classic star trek tos episode, the doomsday machine
He was also in "Dallas"
He was also in an interesting half hour sitcom "My World And Welcome To It" that drew its inspiration from the writing and cartoons of the great James Thurber. The show combined live action and animation. I do believe he snagged an Emmy for it. And we mustn't forget his work in the Steve McQueen thriller Bullitt, which featured one of film's greatest car chases.

I live in Japan and this episode was in TV very early this morning, I grew up in Palm Springs and watched the tram being built.

I had forgotten this episode, been a while since I watched this. Columbo almost always gets his killer, and finds ingenious ways to get the guilty to reveal themselves. I do miss watching this show.
There was actually script development talk of Roddy MacDowell's character deciding at the last moment that since everything had been discovered about how he committed the murder, after he flung open the carriage car door that he would spontaneously decide "Oh well.." & jump to his death. It was deemed too violent for t.v. viewing back then, so they went with the **suggestion** that he might leap.
Columbo as a TV series was way ahead of it's time, no pun intended...

I love Columbo laying out the plan And Roger almost daring him to get it tested. Yet it's all under the surface.
I wonder one thing: how they were able to film this very complicated scene during the short time when the cabin as goind up the thill. How it was possible, that they didn't make any mistake? How they were able to quickly change the postion of the camera to film the scene from different angles?
I wonder how many trips up and down they took on this thing to film this scene.
