"Balada para un loco" (Ballad for a Madman) was composed by Astor Piazzolla with lyrics by Horacio Ferrer in 1969. It tells the story of a man who is madly in love, describing his passionate and somewhat delirious state through surreal imagery. The narrator speaks/sings to his beloved about his crazy love, describing himself as a peculiar character who walks through Buenos Aires seeing the world in a dreamy, poetic way.
The lyrics feature vivid, surreal imagery - the protagonist describes himself riding a broom, wearing newspaper pants and a tin crown, talking to the sky, and seeing the world in fantastical ways. He's expressing how love has made him appear "crazy" to the world, but he embraces this madness brought on by love.
The song was somewhat controversial when it debuted at the 1969 Buenos Aires Festival of Song as it deviated significantly from traditional tango structures and themes. It represents Piazzolla's nuevo tango style, which pushed the boundaries of traditional tango music.
