  • I freaked when I saw the condition of the factory wires on my 2007 BMW headlights. The insulation was falling off in chunks. I did hear this may have been some GREEN Soy based insulation??? Anyway bad supply issue to BMW and also Mini.
    This had 55w globes in it and to my knowledge it always has, so it isn't due to over rated globes, this is a known issue.
    Here i show you a simple fix to keep you going. I had replaced three globes prior to doing this repair. Once i did it I never blew another globe. I DO LIKE AND RECOMMEND the LIQUID electrical tape in the link below.

    When u see one wire dry and cracked, there are others. It is not just because of heat. It is mainly the "biodegradeable" material used. The only way to fix is to open up the lens and take apart everything and pull the harness out and depin each wire to shrink wrap it. It is painful but a permanent solution.

    My wife has an 05 X3 with this exact same issue. A globe blew and I pulled it out today to check which globe it was and seen all the damaged casing. How disappointing they have not done a recall..

    It’s really fairly simple fixing electrical adding new wire etc and that’s what I thought I would be able to do but not that easy the wires rot all the way in the headlight assembly it’s not just about covering the wires up that doesn’t do much solid connection with or without the biodegradable insulator m, the problem is they touch and send a fault and not work really surprised fuses don’t blow or something doesn’t get fried, can’t belive what they want specifically for the 5 series even halogen is the same as the hid most likely due to the common demand 7-1000 a pair depending on brand 300 up on one used 250 looking nasty or for parts and listed not working

    I used electric tape it worked for less than a day. Should I put liquid electric tape over the electric tape and slowly. Or try and tape the electric tape off and use the liquid tape. I’m not trying to F the wire up removing it.

      If you use lqd electrical tape take the other off.
      Some electrical tape is very poor and doesn’t stick well.

    Liquid electrical tape would give a weather tight seal and a cleaner finished look than any tape.

      That is what I used as well. I took the headlamp totally out. I still have the failing bulb dash light on. Do you think the wires crossed and damage d the bulb?

    BMW should be sued for this as it is common in most of their cars. At some point they decided to go green and use SOY insulation wires which degrade and are a great snack for rats. for quick fix others have used liquid insulation that they pain on or spay on. I personally would like to find a service that will crack the headlight open replace these junk wires with normal wiring like in every other car in the world and replace the dull lens. I can not seem to find anyone doing this though. I do not want to spent $1000/new headlight that has the same crappy soy wiring in it. I also recommend for people to replace what ever they can inside these headlights with error free LEDs as they do not get as hot which will prolong the life of the plastic housing which can also crack.

    • @seanpaul3050
      @seanpaul3050 Рік тому

      The led’s may not get that hot. But the ballasts you have to fit to prevent error codes get very hot instead.

    I doubt the insulation degradation is caused by heat. It's more likely caused by ozone created by the xenon bulb. Either way, the wire insulation is terrible and a recall should be issued because of these wires.

      This car has normal tungsten filament globes. Not Xenon

    • @HomeWalkVirtualTours
      @HomeWalkVirtualTours 4 роки тому

      Yes I was going to say the same, it’s not ozone as my dads 1992 850i has exactly the same issue and he doesn’t have xenons hence me finding this video

      No, it's because BMW used wiring with faulty insulation. My 54 year old Ford truck still has the original headlight wires. Surely, BMW can do as well as old Ford trucks.

      @Marksreviewsandtutorials have any ideas that can cause it I've changed my starter,head gasket, pvc values, crankshaft sensor, oil pressure sensor, I have no leaks, but one thing that got my attention is that I do have cracks right where the windshield wiper are and I'm wondering is water going down somewhere and and leaking onto a module or something is there's one in that location and sometimes it's says the key is not reading to the computer witch I don't understand because the car stills starts up before the drive trans messages, also the engine light will come on and eliminate

      Wires shorting out will either blow a fuse or the car will detect the short and cut power to that particular bulb.

      Hi waqas azam because of the bad wire insulation issue I would start there and make sure there are no shorts. Other than that it is just tracing the wire back to see where there is power, starting at the fuses.

    Thanks, very helpful information! I have a 2006 330 CI convertible with the exact same problem. It's my second E46 BMW convertible, but it's certain to be my last BMW. As their slogan boasts, they may be considered by some to be "the ultimate driving machine". They do drive wonderfully when everything is working as it should. However, they're a royal pain in the butt to work on and repair. 😓
    I'm going to have to try the same thing that you have done. But I'm not looking forward to getting into those cramped spaces with my big hands!
    (Anyone want to buy an "ultimate driving machine" convertible just in time for summer fun?) 😛
