This song was written during the Great Cultural Revolution in which many young intellectuals were forcibly sent to remote rural areas for '' second education''. Rough translation: I have gone to Tarim, farewell my beloved ones. Farewell my wishes which accompanied me through my life. I will work without feeling tired in Tarim. I will wrap you up with flowers if you come to Tarim. Farewell my wishes and beloved ones. This song is sad but towards the end you can feel the hope and courage.
Johann Brauer, You misunderstand: young privileged Han intellectuals from Beijing and Shanghai, were sent to remote areas such as XinJiang to learn to work in under-developed and impoverished regions, and to learn ethnic minority cultures --- so that when they come back to Beijing, they can have a more broad and more rich understanding of the country and of the world.
This song is about pure love and passion. It is rather disappointing to see various hate comments. Can't you just enjoy this beautiful song without turning it into a political battle??

"beloved ones'' should mean ''a lover'' in this song. Plural terms in Uyghur sometimes refer to singular objects. It is a very delicate grammar. Maybe I should have translated it as '' a lover''. I could say more about this song. I know the people from that era and they love this song mostly because they can feel it with their own experiences. Young people now love it mostly because it is kind of romantic:-). Strangers love it because it is beautiful and touching at least in terms of melody.
Great song....i only understand "Tarim" but the song sends a chill along the spine That' s how beautiful it is. I'd only wish that somebody post the translation in english. I'm not sure about the conection between the Indo-european Tochar people and the turkic uyghur, but the song makes me think about the moment when the europeans met the han people of the east.

One of my favourite renditions of this song, I love how it incorporated the pipa (for right of the stage), which is a traditional Han Chinese instrument, into this Uyghur song (did you know that this song was originally written by a Uyghur composer and arranged by a Han musician?). Parhat has an extremely magnetic voice, and he won national 2nd place in the Voice contest in China this year. This really captures the essence of Xinjiang: unity and inclusiveness, people of all ethnicity coming together in perfect harmony to create beautiful music, so let's just enjoy the music and screw all the politic talk.

Levin Mengele because seljuks turks are ancestors of modern turks and plenty of central asian nations. Seljuks came from central asia where kazak, uighur, uzbeks, turkmens live. They all have simmilar turkic language.
Because all those people are Turkic people and they belong to the same Altaic language family. Turkish people are Oghuz Turks and those are Uyghur Turks. There are more than 250 million Turks speaking the Turkic language with different accents, they can understand each other with little effort.
This song first came out in early 80s when I was in high school. Reportedly it was created and performed by someone who was sentenced to served in the notorious prison in the Taklamakan desert in Tarim Basin. China built the Tarim prison styled after the Siberian Gulags of the Soviet Union. Tarim was selected as the ideal place for the prison, which is allegedly the biggestin China, because it is remote location in a harsh and unpopulated desert just as Siberia was chosen for the same reason for the Soviet gulags. The text of the song says, I am going to Tarim River Valley, good bye my friends and loved ones. I will work day and night there (it is labor through reform camp).
I mean we could track them down through some local people there. You could look at this link. The lead singer Perhat Khaliq was in Germany in 2010. His band is called Qetiq. An Uyghur student named Muqaddas mijit helped the band come to Europe. Not all the band members got visas.

Thank you Dilmurat, for giving the context.
We know so little and still, we are giving our advice to people with thousands of years of culture.
Such utter BS. The singer misses Tarim because he is a Uighur and misses his home area. Uighurs are from Tarim, not forcefully moved there.
