- For those interested in the interview also, here's the entire BR segment from The Tonight Show 9/12/79, which ends with Buddy playing the song "Boppin."
THE greatest drummer to ever walk planet earth...Bernard "Buddy" Rich
This is IT. The speediest I have ever seen.
Respect
😊
The Greatest Natural Drummer in The History Of The World.
I can’t think of any modern day drummer that can come close to Buddy Rich, either. He truly was one-of-a-kind.
Indeed he was.
This might be the most inspired BR appearance on Carson. The band applauds.
This has always been one of my all time favorite Carson appearances too.
Watch this ua-cam.com/video/gqnS1rz6DcU/v-deo.html from 6/6/82. Even the piano player stands up to applaud and that rarely happened.
I thought this was the most spectacle display of his playing until his April 13 , 1976 was posted...this spectacle topped that I thought...Buddy's playing obviously proved blazed...oh and his admiration for Jise Greco is obvious , buddy coming from the vaudeville era...and knowing how similar tap can be to drumming
The left hand is legendary.
+Scott Mills Watch Buddy on the Carson show April 13, 1976 and the boston pops thing with John Williams.
His playing blows my mind every time.
Me too!
No Question.
I keep coming back to this “
Can't think of any drummer who can come anywhere near BR.
I agree!
this is a side of Buddy that wasnt seen on camera too often.
Yes. He actually had many sides to him, but sadly many people only want to focus on the harsh or critical side.
He really killed this night. :)
There is no other drummer alive now or in the future who will be able to top Buddy. DAVID L. SAELENS (drummer, Rock Island, IL.) posted 19 November 2018.
I feel the same!
@@cloudview747 He should be number 1 in the best drummer list forever.
Now this is the way to start the holidays.
Now that's some exciting music, wow!
Met Buddy when I was 16..He was as nice as he could be..I still have the sticks he gave me..
Jeez... he was good.. I saw him live 18 x ..take my word for it
BUDDY TOLD IT LIKE IS IS,HE PUT EVERYTHING INTO HIS PLAYIN
How is that even possible ?
Indeed!
One of the best if not the best short solo's iv'e ever seen . Love those various and incredible crossovers that he does here, he didn't always do those in his solo's but throws all of them in this time. Also love the tune they play here, thanks again.
I love this particular TS performance also. I wonder if Buddy was pumped because he was dissatisfied with his performance of "Boppin" with Doc just three months earlier on June 13, 1979??
Yes Rufus is one of my all time favorite drummers, he was with Basie and then went to Ellington. Sadly his career was not very long, way too short. The was a reason he was nick named Speedy.
I don't drummer he is my true idol!!!!
What a Brilliant left hand !
No doubt, and this video really shows it off.
AMAZING ! WRISTS ! AND DEDICATION to the ART! of Drumming. Too bad no one has come close to this perfection ! We need another Drummer to Step up !
+Ed Man Glad you are appreciating this so much.
Buddy . So much beautiful human energy. incredible. The best!
Yes. He is definitely missed.
AMAZING
I didn't know they had musical performances at The Comedy Store in LA. It's a legendary comedy club where David Letterman got his start.
Love that Carson line after the anecdote.
“And who would read it to you anyway”
That’s when you’re genuinely great friends when you can take the piss like that, and you both belly laugh out loud.
As A drummer its Buddy's left hand that sets him apart...... stunning!!
He will be 100 Sept 30 2017 I saw him twice the best and never will be another!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT DRUMMER CRAPPY SONG....
I've always wondered what Buddys take would be on our new generation of mega drummers like Virgil Donati (who also plays traditional grip} and Mike Mangini,Thomas Lang..anyway.. you all know the rest....insert your favorite uber drummer of choice.Anyway my point is is that it was no secret that Buddy dismissed rock drummers as mindless knuckle draggers. And he was right about 90 percent of the time...but there's no denying on our side, we got guys like Vinnie C.and Marco M. (apologies folks, my punctuation is for shit. ha ha)
My guess would be that if Buddy were around to comment on today's drummers, it wouldn't be all that different than when he was here. He would likely criticize many drummers as all technical flash with little or no inspired musical development. I think he also would point out and compliment a small number of drummers as creating quality music - again, just like he did when he was alive.
Dan Laurin..The only drummer he gave rave reviews for was Steve Gadd!! He really never mentioned names as he was not a fan of contemporary players!!
@@sticktrikhe complimented Danny Seraphine of Chicago and the drummer for Blood, Sweat and Tears whose name escapes me.
Great Video, thanks for posting it
+Mr DDD3az Glad you enjoy it!
It's his set. NBC usually provided tin cans.
lol it sounds like johnny carson is talking to himself
When music was created and played with style and class.
:-)
I admit I have trouble knowin just where 1 is unless I give my full attention. It seems like it would be so hard to not just get lost listening to Buddy and lose my place and not know when to come back in. It would be interesting to see a wide shot to see how close the band is watching doc for the cues. Buddy does holler it out but his back is to the band..amazing there are so many good players in this world
I too sometimes get lost knowing where 1 is because of getting lost listening to Buddy. And yes, the Tonight Show band was filled with fabulous players.
cloudview747
no slackers in that band..fabulous does seem to be a good description..and isn't it great we can easily find these old wonderful moments preserved hopefully for all time..if all I had was youtube and a room to live in the rest of my life I think I could stay totally fascinated and entertained till the very end..
Ok
Love seeing Buddy count the band back in...he seemed to always be polite as a guest...even when he would see a former member from his band...AAAAA ..!!
There never will be another Buddy Rich ever!!!!!!!!!
That is definitely how I feel!
5:52
he also was a 3rd degree black belt.
Thanks for this Cloud!!🎉😮❤
It's really interesting seeing the different personality sides of Buddy in various Carson interviews. In this one Buddy is very relaxed & laid back.
@@cloudview747 Buddy also puts on a great drum solo on Boppin’ and his left hand is just incredible to watch!! 😮
@@dylangatenby9928 Yes!! This rendition of Boppin' is FABULOUS!!
He's doin' it all wrong!
Are you on drugs I hope you are joking!!!!!!
No, man, I'm not joking. ... Can anyone here communicate with the dead? ... so I can tell Buddy that he's doin' it all wrong.
He's doin' it all wrong! He's doin' it all wrong!
ian paice folks! he's the fastest.
I'm sure ian appreciates Buddy as the rest of us do...but frankly, he is not even in the same league and ian knows it.
Ian is more disciplined than any jass drummer.
I enjoy Ian's work more. Buddy had faster drum roll 2nd to no one.
Ian would be the first to disagree with you, closely followed by the rest of the world. Having said that I think Ian is probably the best exponent of his genre. I am a big fan. No one comes close to BR.
thought Keith Moon was better!!
Gordan Ramsey absolutely not just because Buddy Rich was fast doesn't mean he's better!! Keith Moon had a very much more interesting drum sound and very unique! nothing unique about Buddy Rich drumming except for his speed. he was a total Asshole as well
Better maybe in your preferences of what you like played, but if you are talking about skill and not art, you would be wrong.
Steve Troise...... That's what I like... anyone with a good sense of humor!! lol : )
@@Romans--bo7br k moon was a joke
Pierre morlen of Gong is more interesting to me. More dynamic and breathtaking.
Did he threaten band with physical violence for playing poorly afterwards?
