The spiritual aspect of the lyrics is what drew me to Kansas back in the 70's, and being a Christian, it was some of the only "spiritual" music on the radio. I was in a band at the time and covered one of their songs, but the Lord called me out of the band around 1978. I always figured Kerry was a Christian, but did not realize it wasn't until 1979 that he surrendered to Christ. Awesome testimony.

No doubt Kerry is a musical genius. He wrote songs that were musically and lyrically superior that only someone like Neil Peart could grasp.

In 2011 I was working in Topeka. One of my customers invited me to this church. After the main service she asked if I wanted to go to a class taught there. On the way to the class she asked me if I knew of the band Kansas. I said of course. She said oh great, the class is taught by Kerry Livgren one of the members. And she introduced me to him. Got my picture with him and sent that to my best friend who was a long time fan. This friend took me to see them when they were touring with Bad Company.

Being a Philadelphian and a major Kansas fan, I was blown away by hearing Kerry talk about their concert at the old Spectrum which was demolished a few years ago. At the time, I was too young so I wasn't concert going age yet. But hearing how he reacted to the incredible reception they received made me proud of our rich music history in Philly and how much into the music the fans in this city were and are. The man who built the Spectrum and the Flyers NHL team, Ed Snider passed away last week. He was a great man and did so much for the city. He had wanted his arena to be a major entertainment venue and wanted to have every big musical act that came through town to play there. Now, after listening to his memorial service and hearing what Kerry said here, it seemed a fitting tribute to both Mr. Snider's dream and accomplishments here and the power of music and how it touches people. Hearing Kerry's words in this interview was a poignant moment for me. Ed Snider would be so proud.

Didn't know about his stroke...noticed a slight delay and just figured age. The theology of finding God or seeking goes against Paul who says nobody seeks after God. Being made in God's image is where the quest of spirituality stems from. Sin is way more complex than anyone can imagine despite the horrors both internally and externally in this life.

    • @zpizaman

And here Paul says that In Romans 3:9
      There is No One Righteous
9What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin. 10As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one. 11There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.…

You said that "seeking God" goes against Paul's theology, I suppose in reference to Mr. Livgren's description of his searching/spiritual questing in life and lyrics. There is certainly some truth to that.
However, it must be balanced with other scriptural truths such as:
      Jeremiah 29:13-14a
"And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
And I will be found of you, saith the LORD..."
How do you think those two apparently conflicting concepts can be reconciled and understood? I am pretty sure that the Gospels will show that Jesus will also have something to say about this.

At the 20 minute mark, he talks about booking gigs in "po-dunk" towns in the early days. The little basement Calvary Chapel and Pastor Lavern Campbell and most of the members of Kansas, and the Wonderful Babbie Mason leading music.
The early 80's I was working at Video Supply Company, and we did large conventions and had contracts with most of the major hotels in Atlanta.
We handled all the Sound, video, lighting and lots of 35mn slide projectors.
When the first AD album came out, somehow Video Supply Company was mentioned in the "thanks "🤔
I think we might have loaded out some Sound equipment or something.
Attended the old Metro Bible Study and got to chat with Mylon LeFevre when he was the janitor at Mount Paron Church of God, as he was getting clean.
Special times back in the day, and Kerry won't remember, but we went to lunch a few times in a big group after church.
I was in my early 20's and Kansas was the music I grew up with.
I was pretty pissed off after reading Weird Senses from the Canyon by the late great David McGowan.
I Highly recommend it for those who grew up in the 60-70's and everyone else.
Laurel Canyon was a freaky place where folks were suddenly discovered.
Funny thing, 90 percent of their parents worked in the Military Intelligence Community.

Jackson Browne CSNY Zappa America James Taylor jonnie Mitchell Flying Burrito Brothers Poco Beach Boys and on and on.
Charlie Manson and his family were regulars in the Canyon.

      @Kimberly Lyons
You said you had begged... 40 years... and been ignored.
Here is one thing Jesus says about that.
      Luke 11:9
"And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you."
And lest you say, "It doesn't work for me, because I asked, and didn't receive," he further says in v.10:
"For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."
On the other hand, you said, "I tried." You might need to think about it a bit, but I am pretty sure that what you tried is not what Jesus said works.
Lest you think this is condemnation: it is not. I would suspect you have been trying to get God's freely provided grace by your own efforts. Perhaps stop trying, and simply receive by faith.
The passage cited above continues, and it would be worthwhile to read down to the conclusion:
      Luke 11:13
"If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?"
      Grace and peace to you.

You said (well, more like YELLED), "The Son wanted Kerry. When he wants you, you will come... ."
Just think about what you are saying, or maybe more accurately, what you are implying with that assertion. You imply God chooses only certain individuals to save. And further, only at certain times. That means that God may not *will* to save you. And it also implies that God changes, as for example, yesterday *he did not will* to save you, but today he does. Does that accurately express the revealed will of God? I think not!

*"The Lord is ... not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance."*

I think Kerry "Might " be wrong about the record companies not liking Christian music. Maybe I am wrong BUT.....IF Steve Walsh was singing those songs instead of John Elephante I don't think anything would of been different. John was the WRONG choice to replace Steve Walsh.
John is a great guy, talented but he simply was the wrong choice. He was WAYYYYYY TOO bubblegumish which to me was a HUGE turn off. Not to mention he would be dressed up in concert like he was on his way to a DISCOTECH . To me this is NOT what KANSAS was about. I truly think Christian music would of been successful with KANSAS if STEVE WALSH would of not only sung the songs but let him have input on how the lyrics came across. I absolutely cringed when I saw John Elephante in his sky blue body suite come out on stage at the Spectrum in South Philly .
I'm saying to myself .....what ?
There was no professional musician with a great voice that Kansas could of hired other then Elephante? I think this choice set KANSAS back and never completely overcame from it.
When Walsh came back, but Kerry left even though they brought in my favorite guitar player Steve Morse, it was not the same. The lyrics were definitely not the same. The double album later was Awesome with Kerry writing alot of the lyrics.
Look,I THINK KANSAS was/is thee Greatist band that ever existed. But they did have their highs and lows fer sher. God bless ALL the members who ever played in KANSAS.

    • @ronconrad2867

I respectfully disagree, and his name is John Elefante, not Elephante...your opinion on his look--that's like me saying I hated Walsh wearing short 70's basketshorts and a tank top! Walsh kept Kansas relevant through the early 80's with "Play the Game Tonight " & "Fight Fire with Fire" and is still singing today! Check out his latest album! He can still hit the notes, but hearing Walsh up through his last decade with Kansas was painful. Couldn't hit the notes anymore. As for what Kansas was about, I suggest you read Kerry's book "Seeds of Change". Good luck!

The Christian religion based on the Bible IS certain of its truth. I offer one showstopping passage in evidence:
      John 14:6
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
Now the question is, what are you going to do with that?

Although Kerry is a good man and I respect him, there is only one Christian and we all know who that was. There is a difference between a Christian and a practicing Christian. Jesus Christ would never vote for a politician for a start and he would not seek fame and put himself on a stage.Religion tends to f....k people up and confuse people simply because none of us will ever understand it until we are long gone.If any of us were a true Christian then why did Jesus die for US.Kerry is A good song writer and very humble and a good man but in no way a true Christian as it is impossible to do so under a political system. Our imperfection has been handed to us from the beginning of time,so don't fool yourselves. Calling ourselves a Christian is an insult to the very Christian who gave us his life.

@@devmag52 Kerry's politics changed his views and I certainly believe his admiration for some of the former leaders is in the complete opposite of Christ's teachings. It's how I feel. I prayed for Kerry for 5 years after the first album in hopes that he would find Jesus because I was a believer, so in 79 when he became a Christian, I was ever so grateful and thankful that he had accepted Jesus. When I heard how much he admired don trump, alarms went off because don is certainly not the messiah, he claims himself to be. You can't have it both ways as a Christian. Jesus, in his very words, warns of people like don trump. It has broken my heart since 2017 when I heard from a friend how much Kerry admired don. No sense in giving me lip about it, it's how I feel. As a songwriter and musician, I admire Kerry probably more than any other musician alive today., but it's like I'm back at square one in hope that he finds that this man is not someone to emulate.
