All life is suffering by its very nature. It only hurts when you cannot understand the truth of things,,there is no “you”…the destruction of the ego is our biggest feat here. Once you see things for what they really are-including the “self”, you can begin to understand,, “dependent origination” -and life gets easier and you get lighter and easier. You treat “people” kinder with the understanding that “few are born with little dust in their eyes.”✨✨✨All can come to this understanding, but not all will.
I would love to have a conversation about this with Lex😭✨This dude has a pretty close concept to what I know to be the truth,,but The questions Lex asked him we’re-from what I know -leading him more towards the truth,differing from what this man described. This man has a close concept but from what I know -it’s not quite the truth.
The first episode with Joscha is the best in the history of the podcast so its safe to say I'm excited for this one.

i enjoyed the 1st podcast with Joscha Bach so much that i sought out other lectures and conversations with Joscha!
Ya, I remember sitting in my car about to go on an 8 hour drive and started his first Lex episode. When he explained what a nerd is as being someone that uses dialogue as a means for peer review of ideas as opposed to a bid for social power I was hooked. His rhetoric for diagnosing the mind is unprecedented. Definitely one of my favorite thinkers.

The thing I absolutely love about lex is he is dumb enough to ask the questions in a way that I could follow but also genius enough to know what questions to ask.
To me, Joscha is the most profound public intellectual of our era. It is unfortunate that he does not have more public exposure, but I suppose that is simply due to the unbelievably high level at which he perceives and thinks of these ideas. He is simply a different level.

This really seems, without hyperbole, like one of the most important pieces I've content I've ever heard. I feel like he just offered the best synthesis to date of consciousness and life itself. And only half way through it so far. I'm not often this awestruck. One of my first thoughts is that this needs subs in multiple languages added, as non native English speakers are going to have difficulty with Joscha's accent and level of vocabulary ; the whole world deserves to hear this!

Without a doubt the trippiest episode I've listened to. Joscha's descriptions are simultaneously abstract to the point of incomprehensible and yet I somehow feel as if I can just maybe manage to wrap my monkey brain around these concepts and know what it is he is talking about. A surreal experience.

Nah. I understand a good 40% to 60% of his ideas. Then I use that which I've come to understand, to make inferences about the rest of what he is saying, then build a model of the broader picture he paints. Pretty easy.

As in, they could be spouting all sorts of bullshit and make a career out of that, because their vocabulary and use of concepts befuddles most minds. Do people spot your mistakes? Just raise the level of abstraction.

Holy @#@! Joscha just gave us years and years of his research all chunked together in his well articulated answers. To a lot of people he probably is talking gibberish, but I have never heard another human being be able to articulate an idea so well. This is actually a sign that the model is actually very very simple. To me simplicity is a sign of truth. Thank you Lex and Joscha.
I discovered Mr. Bach from a somewhat snarky twitter interaction I had with him, but I liked what I saw on his page so I looked him up on here, listened to both of your interviews with him back to back, and now I feel like my life is forever changed for the better...and it all started because some brilliant person decided to take a shot at me on twitter (a totally funny and lighthearted shot, btw). I love the whacky, beautiful ways life unfolds, and I'm eternally grateful to the two of you for producing these conversations and releasing them for free. This is one of my favorite interviews, because they're both obviously extremely smart and nice, but they clearly misunderstood each other at times where I expected the conversation to get derailed and yet they both continued to remain calm and work through their misunderstandings. It makes me wonder if/when something like GPT-3 would be able to pick up on such subtle tensions/misunderstandings in a conversation like this...

I only recently subscribed to Lex's channel after watching an incredibly enthralling clip of Annaka Harris sharing her thoughts on the nature of consciousness and while watching the longer interview Lex had a couple of moments at the max where he didn't seem to understand what she was talking about. I didn't think much of it at the time but after watching several of his interviews I couldn't tell if he was misunderstanding clear statements and interrupting / derailing the conversation because he wanted clarification for his viewers, was thrown off base because maybe english isn't his first language or if he really didn't understand clear concepts. Dont get me wrong he's smart in his own way but some of the tangents he goes on literally make zero sense half the time and i can tell the guest is being polite by not pushing him for clarification on what the hell he's taking about

Talking about dreams, i woke up this morning at 6am went to the bathroom and then back to bed and put on my computer with this podcast. after 15 min fallin asleep with the podcast still running. And in some weird way the voices and the topic where woven in to my dreams and it felt total realistic that people in the dreams aproched me with Lex voice and asked question about reality,dreams and consciouness. a good way to start the day =)
Joscha is my favourite guest of yours. These podcasts are mindblowing and I dont use that term lightly. I only with I was smarter to follow the conversation on a deeper level. Never the less, great talk! I hope we get many more with Joscha.
My jaw was dropping constantly throughout this interview at the bombs of knowledge being exploded by J S Bach. But when he delineated why Miyazaki illuminated his soul via the Heidi-complex, my heart swelled and models of tears fell upon the fabric of my reality. What a beautiful story Lex and Joscha wove.

When I thought about this, innocence is dealt with well in the Japanese programs I have watched. Ash Ketchum was completely unjaded after years of trying to become a Pokemon master. Princess Peach is a classic victim of circumstance, at least in the early years.
The idea of agency being a control model that is intertwined with its own set point generator is one of those ideas that feels like a given once it's explained but is so sophisticated when you realize Joscha had to develop that idea from the ground up

From a life form to another
Mr Bach either has a talent for putting his thoughts into words or he has spent a lot of time thinking about how to most accurately phrase most of his ideas; or maybe it's simply that he's been asked about them so many times that he has a canned response ready by now. Whichever one it is, it's interesting that the precision of his language makes the information density of his sentences very high, which makes it hard to take in everything he's saying in real time. It's like he's speaking too quickly for my brain to process the information, even though he's speaking at a perfectly normal pace.
Maybe none of those two have to be necessarily true. Let's digest this a little: he simply is highly intelligent by a number of metrics that also happen to include verbal intelligence. Therefore, speaking fluently, accurately and densely can come as second nature to him, the same way some people without formal training can snap into high-strain opera singing on the spot and maintain perfect pitch and harmony for minutes and hours.
He may not even need prior extensive speaking training or media training (a hunch that I got since I was able to find only a mere handful of interviews with him online). In his interventions, he seems quite modest and contained, and that can also be the result of a safe strategy on his management of his public persona.
I also recognize he has undeniable high information density packed in his speech delivery, which often times means you can't zone out and miss a single phrase uttered by him without losing the grip of the whole paragraph he's leading you on. I like that - it's exactly at the opposite end to what other speakers are doing 🙃
Another advantage of this style is that this whole interview could very efficiently be transposed into an actual book the same way a stenographer nails down everything said in a court of law with 100% accuracy. The ensuing editing done afterwards would be minimal - any publishing house's dream.
My point is: I have a feeling Joshua's pretty much always been like this. Some things you're simply born with or not, and further training can do little in expanding certain abilities (training in verbal intelligence or sense of humor - quite little; muscle control for piano playing, overcoming stage fright or improving social integration skills - a lot of progress can be made). Sometimes what meets the eye is just what it is. It do be like that doe.
It reminds be of Jordan Peterson. JP talks about how he scrutinizes every word he says in order to convey the right idea he is attempting to convey. I think you are on to something with your comment
@@isaacionescu3559 He's just very educated on what he speaks about and I think what you're recognizing is his "attention span". This man didn't form his brain with short TV shows, movies and shitty school teachers like most of us. He trained and grew his brain with with literally hundreds of books, research and novels from an early age, all on his own I suppose. His control over his attention is something to be admired, its extremely impressive to me. That control gives him so much power when attempting to convey an idea to an individual. You're exactly spot on though with mentioning how missing out on any part of what he expressing will cause you to be lost rather quickly. It seems every word he adds to an idea serves great importance, at the very at the very least you could say every sentence.

I have to remark, every time I start to listen to Joscha speak I’m first terrified, then absolutely infatuated with the knowledge he is dropping. It blows my mind...and at the same time helps me deal with my own sublime experience as a meat puppet. I love listening to him explain in painful detail using the most precise vernacular - ah...it is like poetry to my ears. Love these podcasts and always listen start to finish about 5 times. Bravo!

I find the exploration of who we are and what we are to be fascinating especially, in asking the questions that all of us can only postulate answers even when, we have some evidence each person seems to have their own way of intuiting the data presented. I find Lex to be the constant variable in these interviews that is the most intriguing. I have a renewed sense of humanity through each discussion that gives me a sense of a peace in this world because of Lex' optimism and view. I appreciate you Lex.

I have listened to both the first podcast with Joscha and this one at least 5 times and I'm still processing. These conversations are a gold mine of information and wisdom.

I was on a Joscha Bach marathon this week after watching Round 1. I believe I concur and endorse with almost of what he said, and thank you Lex for bringing this polymath into my intellectual hemisphere again today.
This is my 5th time listening to this one. Ive done the first one multiple times. I'm in love with Joscha. I was defining life as a negative entropy well long before I ever heard him. I like him because he thinks like I do but deeper than I ever could lol... and he gets to do it for a living.
I’m gonna have to listen to this podcast 5 times before it marinates. The depth is so satisfying

I have just listened for an hour or so of the podcast. It is mind blowing.
Two very interesting things to me:
1. During the enlightenment, the philosophers imagined the word as ruled by laws similars to the ones of mechanics. Voltaire famously described God as being a Great Clockmaker (at least it is famous in France, where we are taught this in high school). Today, Joscha imagines the world with concepts derived from quantic theories, programing and probabilistic models. As great as a human mind can be, we can only comprehend the world and the universe with concepts we understand. The greatness of Joscha is that he actually acknowledges his own limits.
2. The way Joscha descibes consciousness is very similar to the way it is described by the mystics. For thousands of years, mystics have experienced the emptiness of the material world and a few of them have experienced reality.
I would really encourage @lex fridman to organise a discussion with a mystic, how do mystics think the world in the age of AI.
That said, I will now browse for Joscha's speeches, maybe a discussion with a mystic has already been recorded.
Feel free to update, if you found something good. I was similarly reminded of the mystics, maybe A Course in Miracles, especially. It would be interesting to nail down the overlap and also the differences.

My god @ 02:30 Joscha nails exactly modern humans fundamental failure that is at the absolute core of all human suffering on earth almost so fluidly and calmly it may pass through many ears as just words within a larger conversation. It is the whole of our existence and if not our “absolute” we will cease to exist. It deserves every resource, will, and intention to bring to bear. It was struck upon by Lex’s signature more love mantra (which Lex i think lives in your heidi part that lives on from your childhood) i think is a large part of your success in podcasting. Joscha is like a philosophical machine gun that seems to have no internal conflicts and no ego. Its like he has a teleprompter being fed from the universe itself. When he was talking about his kids i was blown away by his almost father son and wholly ghost point of view. There are so many people i would like to hear in conversation with joscha as it seems his understanding and awareness seems boundless and rooted in first principals independent of time and place. All i can say is dam.
I am impressed by Joscha's patience.
The interview is a wonderful opportunity to access a rare and precious intelligence.
Some of the questions seem to be aimed at placating fairly mundane fears.
I wonder what Joscha is afraid of?
Being honest, I didn't expect a literary analysis of Heidi when tuning in to this podcast! Bach has an unusual clarity of mind, and I feel privileged in eavesdropping on this conversation.
Same here, first I thought - did he say "Heidi" 🏔️ I mean "Heidi" 🤦 but in the context of Ghibli Films like "Mononoke" it all made sense - eavesdropping I will again!
His take on and breakdown of the healthcare system is brilliant and refreshing.
Especially coming from someone one would typically consider to be deep into "tech bro" culture. Joscha is on another level though .. I might join his religion if he starts one
