The Moment that Bloodborne Became Unforgettable is about Orphan of Kos, Lady Maria, Laurence, Ludwig and the old hunters DLC. The story goes that as Yharnam was experiencing its golden age, the founders of the healing church and the hunters of the beastly scourge sought out another great one to harvest and study. This great one was known as Kos or Kosm. When they went to this hamlet, the village worshiped Kos as she provided them with food in the form of parasites (gross). Everything was going well until the Byrgenworth scholars came in. Lady Maria, Micolash, Gherman, Ludwig, Laurence, all a part of the hunt in some way. The scholars discovered the presence of the Great One, as well as the connection the residents of the hamlet had with her. According to Accursed Brew's description, the scholars ravaged the village. Eldritch knowledge is known for granting eyes on the inside of the head, so the scholars wanted to find them. Eventually, Kos was hurt by these actions. As a result, they were cursed to forever remain in this world by the remaining villagers under their will and power of Kos, this nightmare state of the old hunters.

This will be the end of the Bloodborne universe for now, the door to Elden Ring is getting wider and frenzied flame is calling, will you answer?
Step foot into the lands between, tarnished. And, become Elden lord.
Have you ever played sekiro? This guy is not hard lol
Malenia is a dance, orphan is panic atk
More like a seizure
Gherman is a tearful. Malenia is a dance. Sword saint isshin is a show. And Orphan is a seizure

Don’t know if anyone else mentioned it, but it’s not just a placenta blade. The blade and line that the Ook uses is the fishing hook and line that hooked Kos and pulled it in.
Even grosser thank you
I've never heard that Kos was pulled in as you say, I've always read / heard that Kos washed up ashore and that was partly why she was venerated. What is the source of this information? I'm very curious, thank you!
You mean the umbilical cord? 😂 😂

I’ll be honest… the two Shark-Giant’s were the hardest fight in all Bloodborne for me. Beating them without exploits is maddening.
If you go through the way from the elevator that leads to orphan, fighting them is pretty manageable
I jumped down that well to hide from the shark beast ON TOP, thank God I got them first try but it was an endurance run, I used ALL MY ITEMS 😭
The two Shark-Giants in the well were the hardest fight FromSoft ever made. Legit, I find Malenia easier than those two motherf*ckers. One of them alone is already the most powerful non-boss enemy, but two together are just ungodly.
@@jenjoe4359How, there's no difference. I tried cheesing the one on the ceiling, you can't hit it to my knowledge.
I beat them first try kinda by accident. I thought they were going to be tough...
The Orphan's weeping is Gehrman's.
His screams may also be Gehrman's.
And if you look closely at his face, while it's skeletal, it's not at all unlike the First Hunter's, either. Personally, I've always taken this to mean that, ultimately, the deaths of Kos and the Orphan before everyone got trapped in the various nightmares were more directly caused by Gehrman, something I feel is supported by the elevator statue that takes you to the clocktower. That statue shows three men overlooking the body of the Orphan. One of them is Master Willem, one of them is Laurence, and one is Gehrman, who is the only one among those three to be a Hunter.
I personally think, after Kos was killed, they took the body of the Orphan back for study, and that it was Gehrman who was responsible for killing it in the waking world. I think that's why you find one of the one-third umbilical chords in the original Hunter's Workshop, not far from the Clocktower in Yharnam. I think that's the Orphan's one-third chord, and I think that Laurence might've had him use that as the means to commune with the Moon Presence once the Dream was revealed to them. Which is all to say, I think the Orphan's appearance in the Hunter's Nightmare is one partly shaped by the memories of the people who killed it, chiefly Gehrman.
That’d mean that even Gehrman had a hard time against the bastard, goddamn.
This is brilliant! And would also explain the presence of the umbilical cord in the original Hunter's workshop, which I always had questions about
@@ryuivanovich7271The implication is the child died in its fetus form. They ripped it out of the mother to experiment on it, where it died during. This is a manifestation of that baby’s rage, openly towards Gehrman..😢
@@iosonoio8799the Cord Has nothing to do with Koz.
@@hugofreitas6799 some say kosm
Pretty sure it's made explicitly clear that Kos was dead long before she ever washed ashore. It was what they did to the Orphan that brought on the curse. Kos is only corporeally dead, which seems to merely be a slight inconvenience, if even that, for a great one
Also, those aren't water bags. That's their heads, grossly expanded by infection of parasites
Yep, Kos arrived dead and has parallels to an old Japanese tradition where the more remote island peoples would occasionally receive the gift of a "dead God" washing up in their shore in the form of a whale thus giving them much needed food and materials. The whale was respected and praised as a bountiful God during this time.
Kos was already dead. The orphan however was killed by Gherman/Maria/Willem who did the same to the peaceful residents.
I don't think there's anything to back up the parasites in the head though. The only reference for what they're injected with is the brain fluid item description. It bearing a resemblance to the Lake rune as how deep water creates a bulwark for the Great ones. I suppose you could argue the brain fluid is made of the parasites because both are blue (same as the blue elixir) so it does kinda make sense.
@@Funko777 parasites cause your head to fill with fluid irl
Someone once mentioned that whenever Orphan calls for lightning, it always struck the same spot; Mother Kos' corpse. The scream isn't actually calling for lightning specifically, it's Orphan's instinct to call help from their mother. Whether it's Kos' transcended form hearing her child's calls or Kos' body reacting to the screams, the instincts to protect are still there.
Just one thing, Kos was already dead when the Old Hunters came. Their sin against her was dissecting and studying her unborn child.
It’s crazy how this games lore is just an endless rabbit hole.
I will never forget this boss, I remember I was nervous as hell to fight him because I saw all the horror stories about this guy. I was using the saw cleaver as my main weapon the uncanny one I do believe with the gems I had. Of course I farmed the hell out of the best ones you can obtain in chalice dungeons, so I made sure I was as strong as possible. Went in to fight the boss, got him down to 3 or so shots on my first try and died. I was like ok ok, I can do this. Beat him my second try while my friend was at my house and it took him 3 hours to beat orphan using the whirligig saw. He looked at me and said "I hate you". I can remember how happy I was when saying "that was easy". Lol

Nothing can compare to your first blind play through. BB was my first souls game and my favorite by a long shot. now after beating all the others as well as sekiro, ER and AC6 I can say it still would have been my favorite even if it wasn’t my first, it’s just deeper and more fleshed out.
Fantastic attention to detail! Thank you for consistently highlighting how great the sound design is, and letting it "speak for itself."
The Old Hunters DLC along with DS2’s Scholar of the First Sin was one of many DLCs I started buying and well, The Old Hunters DLC was honestly the most amazing experience. The Orphan of Kos, is easily one of the best best bosses I’ve faced and I still have trouble with him to this day.
definitely not one to forget
@@EvanExplains Indeed, it is my all time favorite FromSoftware game ever.
I'm glad you already mentioned Shadow over Innsmouth. It's a creepy and chilling story and it has clear influence on the DLC. Just fantastic use of these kind of stories by FromSoft
So I didn't have much trouble with the orphan of kos, because right before I fought him, I fought Laurence The First Vicar and I learned a very important lesson. The trick was to dodge forwards. Most of OoK's attacks cam be avoided by dodging forward. Took me like 5-6 tries
Laurence on the other hand took like a billion tries give or take
Same. I found OoK easier than Laurence
You dodge forward with Gascoigne to
@@procow2274 dodging forward and staying aggressive in general is the intended way. The developers give you one shitty shield, where they make fun of shields in general in the item description. The only other shield being the Loch Shield which only works for magic (projetiles).
In the main game dodging to the left is the trick and I followed the same strategy in Old Hunters and it didn't work here. With Ludwig, dodging in general was useless whether it's forward or sideways. With Maria it's same case but compensated with the fact that she's much easier to Parry
But Laurence and OoK, dodging is the key.
@@ravipathak4614 dodging left is still the trick with Ludwig, too. Thing is, instinct tells you to dodge his charges and swipes to the right because that's the side where his back is leaning down, so it looks less threatening. In reality his hitbox, particularly for his charge, is larger on that size and he'll catch you more easily with his swipes along the ground, where you can weave under some of his attacks if you dodge to his left. Ultimately, though, timing is the key with Ludwig. Attack at the wrong time and he's probably gonna counter you with a kick to the face or a swift bite.
6 tries on my first ever play through of Bloodborne. Probably my greatest video game accomplishment. Ludwig was the bane of my existence
Its just so sad to realize you’re fighting an orphan while his dead mother’s corpse is couple of feet away for him only made a corpse by the insanity of the old hunters and their search for ascension

We practically barged into something we weren't supposed to and proceeded to kick an orphan to death while it was grieving the loss of it's mother and whatever else. I jest, but the orphan sounds like it's pretty much fighting you out of hatred for what your kind did, rather than being a monster who kills for just the kill. If it's anything that this boss fight felt during the clash, it would likely be sadness and hatred.
yo bro, just saying your content is awesome, i love watching your essay videos and i think they're extremely well written and directed, kudos to you! have a nice day

Its really sad that every Great One loses their child, but the Orphan uniquely lost his mother. How lonely and tragic that he was never even named

Great video! Only two issues so far. Both Sekiro and Dark Souls 3 came out after Bloodborne, so the two things you mentioned that were references to the other games would actually be backwards, those instances in Sekiro and DS3 would be references to Bloodborne.
We know, what he means is they are foreshadowing From's future titles (Sekiro was already in devlopment by the time Bloodborne DLC was being made) hope this clears it up.
Ah, Kos... Or some say, Kosm... Do you hear our prayers?

I'm currently on a brand new Bloodborne run thanks to you. My ps4 broke 2 years ago so I lost all my save data on BB so I plan on playing thru on the ps5 to get all my fav weapons and outfits and such
I fought orphan of kos for the first time the other day one my ng+ playthrough since i didnt realize the game threw you right into you next playthrough. Honestly with all the hype and the way everyone talked him up i was worried esspecially him having more health etc. He beat me up a few times but i beat him in about 6 trys. Then with new found resolve from fairly easily beating one of the hardest bosses i proceded to beat the rest of the base game 1st trying ever boss except 3. Amy, comos, and nightmare guy(idk why it took me more than once). Point is he didnt live up to the hype for me as far as difficulty
The bit around Lady Maria and her doings also tie in rather nicely with Iosefka's impostor at the clinic, as well. Sadly, she didn't get the lab notes from the old hunters and their trials, but it is a nice tie-in. Given the content so far, Bloodborne should've been given some additional dlc that delves deeper into the Vile Bloods, imo, as there is much, _much_ more to uncover there.
I also noticed kos weapon looks like certain blood gems which brings up a lot of questions
It's also a placenta
A book can also be a hat
That screaming is forever imprinted in my brain.
The orphan, not my own screaming after being killed over and over again. Or maybe it’s both idfk
That well in the fishing hamlet is the true final boss

Living Failures might not be the best boss but their OST for phase 2 has no reason to go as hard as it does
Absolutely NO reason to go that hard 😂

Laurence and ludwig in ng+ cycles go goblin mode.
I love Orphan!! Best bloodborne boss in my opinion. He’s super hard but I love the fact he’s also completely fair and the reason that he’s hard is because he’s fast, strong and aggressive. Learning the parry windows on his attacks and going around and charged R2ing him when he does his placenta spam feels AWESOME. I also love that if you’re aggressive you can stagger him. Compared to Malenia, Orphan is hard for all of the right reasons, instead of Malenia where she has like a standard and fair moveset but then this one crazy attack that can just outright end a run on the spot.
Also: his weapon is his placenta, but there’s also the fishing hook inside that placenta that killed his mum, Kos.
I'll remember his screams forever
That's when you get your buddies to help you clear your playthru boss.
I hate when people say that Laurence is just a fire cleric beat, which is true
but he is also a bloodletting beast, sometimes even headless with a parasite making up for the loss of brain
I’m not sure what happened, but orphan seems so much easier than Laurence now, never died to him more than once a character after the first time.
I like this content!
thank you!
Now, THIS title i agree with LOL, no update needed after i watch the video (and forget to update)
Damn now I have to play this again
Can you imagine a live-action Rated R version of the slaughter and massacre within the Fishing Hamlet by Maria and Co.?
What i love about Orphan is... Yes he is hardest boss in a fair way...
Not like Malenia type bullshit boss....
The orphan is my favorite boss fight ever!
Orphan of Kos' screams are a stock sound like the Wilhelm scream. I used to hear it a lot as a kid.
What?! Where?! How?! HUH?!?!
Pretty sure the crunch sound in the grass is actually bones.

The fishing hamlet is such an awesome area, the design of it is so gross and creepy.
Agreed, it’s dripped with atmosphere
I think hat makes the Orphan so difficult is how unrelenting he is. There's no other boss in any FromSoft game that attacks so aggressive.
Soul of sinder
My sphincter still spasms when I hear it scream...
Bloodborbe is my 3rd favorite fromsoftware game such a great game 10-10
More bloodborne, I need more!
This boss took me a full day to beat him. I was actually losing my mind. When I finally beat him my brother was with me and for the first time he actually was scared of me because my face looked like a psycho. I screamed and smiled while shouting at it. Had a headache for 2 hours after that.
The only use of stealth in a fromsoft game? Literally the first ds game - demons' souls - has a blind boss that fights based on sound alone and can one shot the player if he hears you. Also, Sekiro - literally a shinobi; a ninja...
For those not familiar with HP Lovecraft's stories, the fishing hamlet is very clearly modelled on the Lovecraft story called The Shadow Over Innsmouth.
Played this game right after I played 400 hours of elden ring. Kosm gave more work than anyone in both games except malenia.
I really wish there was a way to rematch him without having to do a whole new save. Fighting him felt more like fighting a player than even Hunters do. We kept one upping each other and countering counters. It’s such a fun fight.
Ahhh back when From Software made Grendel from Beowulf one of the hardest bosses of all time
I managed to beat the orphan in two tries via what I can only suspect was some sort of miracle n it honestly just made me really sad, I wanted to be stuck on it for days. feels like I missed out on the experience somehow. at least I suck real bad at elden ring 👍

I defeated Kos about 3 months ago. It took me 13 attempts. Not bad overall as far as attempts are concerned. But I’ll never forget that feeling on that final run when it clicked for the boss.
I usually have a easy time with widely considered hard bosses (proud to say maria and ludwig only took 4 tries) but Orphan humbled me, 50 tries but man was the feeling worth it.
225 tries here and now I am depressed.

A shame to not see any clips from the Tolomeo no dodge runs, but great vid nonetheless.
I remember the first time i did a bloodborne run with the dlc... no joke, orphan of kos too well over 20 attempts. Also, i ended up asking a friend to help me fight him 😅
As a big Bloodborne fan, if you think Orphan of Kos is one of the hardest bosses ever, you’ve clearly never played the latest God Of War games on NG+ hardest difficulty.
Sigrun on GMGOW NG+ is seriously no joke! The only boss in the Souls games (haven't played DS2 or Sekiro yet) that rivals in difficulty is Malenia. Sigrun I prefer because she seems like a more fair fight. Fighting Malenia was a complete shitshow that made me question my self worth lmao
@@brileonn I gave up at Hrolf and Gnar in Ragnarok, they're hard enough on NG, NG+ I began to sense would just drain my fucking mental health... One of the few times I'll just flat out admit to something being fairly outside of my gaming competency.

Oh, and regarding the human-like features of the Orphan of Kos; is it possible that, in their unhinged longing for ascension, one of the (male) hunters was responsible for Kos's pregnancy and that, given all hunters and their children were cursed, it was mad as a result?
Orphan’s Cries are the same. Orphan looks like Gherman for a reason😅
So a primearch died because of a really powerful human and thats why the emporor hid it?
For the 2nd or 11th legion.
So I noticed that you used the same clips from boss reactions here on UA-cam
4:15 Sekiro came out after Bloodborne just a heads up
Orphan is the hardest boss, the last bit of content is the DLC, and the hamlet is the clearest homage to Lovecraft. All of these are excellent but metatextual reasons why it’s important. I’m still not clear on the curse or secret shame of the hunters thing.
Somehow managed to beat him on my 5th try yesterday
He was a pain in most of our collective Ass’s.

In my first time against him, I died a LOT of times. But the second time and third time I face him I beat him in a first try, he became one of the most enjoyable boss fight in the game

@@EvanExplainsdemon’s souls dragon god boss was basically red light green light as a “fight”
Idk why but it took me more attempts to defeat ludwig than Kos. 😅
I think hes harder than Melania. Like in Elden Ring you have more tools in the kit to destroy her; Spirit summoning, tactics, magic, shields, etc. Bloodborne is like ok, "here is this wailing unstoppable monster, have fun"
I actually consider Laurence to be the harder boss then Orphan. Got Orphan second try on my first playthrough and even in NG+ an ++ it’s the same. Kos is super intense and hard, but kinda predictable as you’re able to see his moves much better, than Laurence. The best boss anyway is Ludwig, boss design, his weapon, cutscene and music, especially phase 2 is almost unbeatable.
I have to disagree here. I honestly feel like I'm one of the only people that killed Orphan on their first try. Ludwig was wayyyy harder imo, that c_unt gave me so much trouble, will never forget him💀 the Pthumerian Descendant is the hardest imo, i had to redo him like 40 times. I did find jt was mainly the arena causing me trouble, though.
One shotting Orphan of Kos is quite a feat! He took me about 10 tries I think, but I struggled way more fighting Ludwig too with 37 tries (actually counted that time). He was definitely the hardest in the game for me
If we’re counting chalice dungeon bosses then I’d say the defiled chalice watchdog of the old lords was the hardest boss
