I like the part about getting older! I'm going to be 52 in July, and I am particularly fond of the "zeros." Seems every time I hit a "zero" year, I feel better about life than I did during the prior decade.
yeah I remember that "life audit" vid. Feels like 2-3 months ago rather than a year. time flies. You inspired me to get a journal last year. And a decent fountain pen. Yeah, don't write on a computer, a device, your phone. Pen and paper. I wrote down my gym workouts, progress and weekend "to do" lists like tree work outside, shopping, etc. It helped me be more productive. Holds you accountable when it's committed to paper.
Some of my goals for 2024: - Take first aid, CPR, and AED training. - See the Met Opera in New York (which I have tickets for now). - Have a decent understanding of chemistry, physics, and biology. - Have a better understanding of chess openings and their respective responses. - Continue reading classic literature, with all the big names under my belt (er, suspenders). - Stay at a local luxury hotel. - Completely master correct "whom" usage in everday speech. (I mostly have it down, but not fully.) - Buy at least two new suits - one for summer and one for cold weather. - Be a better horse-rider. - Keep up my charitable donations. - Compete in novice swordfencing tournaments. - Keep my fish tank cleaner than I am.
Morning MD, You have some great goals that I find inspiring. The fencing I find most interesting as I’ve been fencing for a longer than I’d like to admit. Are you planning on epee, foil or saber? Tradition would dictate that one would start with foil( but that’s an outdated belief). My weapon of choice is the epee.
@@9er.. Thank you! I'm a saber fencer. I know saber is a bit mocked by the community, but I started with it and like it. I've been taking lessons for about a year; I just haven't competed yet.
Agreed. My own goal for 2024 is to do one small thing each day that brings me joy (wearing a suit once or twice each week, reading 30-60 minutes before bedtime, taking a walk around the neighborhood, working on my toy soldier collection, shining a pair of dress shoes, etc.)
Happy new year, Ash. I stumbled across your channel recently and it just resonates with me, I like your words, your approach and your organisational and communication skills, so to say. It all brings value to my life at the moment. I´m not even a chap, I´m a woman.
Glad to report, I've just retired... at 54. BUT, I've got a stack of work to do to the house.... the extension roof and new boiler is beyond me, but the rest I'll tackle, eventually. Wish me luck
These are great suggestions, using general principles that can be applied in any aspect of life. Before I retired from secular work (I now do voluntary work), we used an acronym for setting goals, which I thought was good: We were to set SMART objectives: Our targets were to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-constrained. Again, this can be used in setting objectives in all areas of life.
All nice and good BUT 3 thoughts I'd like to share with you on this topic : - goal setting does not work for most people (doesn't work for me for sure). There are other strategies that are far more efficient. Litterature enough available on that topic. - Relying on peer pressure for achieving goals is also not the best advise. It's negative motivation. - Yes indeed you have to start somehow. Writing goals in a journal is often a path to procrastination ("it's written so it's done"). Bravo Zulu for what you are doing and All the Best for your channel, looking forward to your future video.
Happy new year, Ash. It's hard to set goals in my case, when the main thing you want is that the awful conflict started by your own country would end. Unfortunately the rigged 3-days electronic "elections" won't help it, since everyone already know the result. But still I know that at least I need to stay healthy and don't let myself give up for the future. Thanks for your positive videos, been watching them since long ago, even though I'm much younger.
Sound advice, thank you Ash. Bad habits can easily creep in and I think it’s often a fine line between living and enjoying life and aiming for healthy self-discipline. I wish you and other readers a Happy New Year.
Your timing is always spot on Ash. Yesterday I started looking into postgrad degrees and what I’d be most interested in ( and qualify for with my undergrad degree). I swear guys ( technically anyone ) could use your content as an encyclopedia for life.
Very inspiring Ash. With some goal setting, planning and action little and often to chip away at it 'the meek shall inherit the earth'. Happy New Year All!
Happy New Year Ash, Im recovering since Christmas Eve from a horrible Viral Infection that has taken me out and still haven't recovered yet. I know all to well about Writing Down goals and even created a Accountability Meet Up group years ago! I did achieve some success but most of the time they fizzled out due to lack of commitment, resilience and self belief in my abilities. This is universal for everyone its allways done to Accounability. I also recommend the book "Little Things Matter" 100 ways to Improve your life Today by Todd W Smith. Cheers Ash
Happy New Year Ash. It looks as if you videoed this in April. It looks like Spring there. Things are so green. In my advancing age, I am learning to avoid hazards more than when I was young. I would say I was dealt a hand very strong in some suits and very weak in others. Working around my weak spots is challenging.
There’s something about committing ink to paper by your own hand that makes you more accountable. If it’s a phone, computer, device, etc, there is less connection. Anyone could have written it or it’s just easier to file away, ignore, pretend it doesn’t exist or flat out forget about it. I’m a firm believer in pen and paper. Good quality 80+gsm paper and a fountain pen.
Happy New Year Ash, wishing you and your family a fabulous 2024. Thanks for your excellent efforts to date with all of your outstanding presentations and wisdom sharing. We feel that we're on your journey too making collective improvements. That can only be a good thing for all of us. Keep positive and inspirational, and a big thank you.
Nice video. I am writing at least three things which I have done well on every day on each evening. This is my success journal and meant to boost my self confidence. Also, each day I will write down my goals each day. Unlike the last few years, I do not use smart or precise goals, as I am aiming for a generic mindset. Means no SMART goals and such. Instead of „I want to have 10k emergency fund“ I write „I can manage my money well.“ Not specific or precise, but more of a generic style. This is the opposite of what my old coach said but it seems to work well for me. I will reevaluate after a few months and am very curious of the outcome.
Indeed top-notch suggestions on how to do life audits, I appreciate very much how you highlight it's not simply about success or failure, but rather having in mind a set goals then getting started and finally keeping going to achieve one's goals as always thanks for sharing and indeed the very best to you and your family in the coming New Year of 2024!
Excellent advice, as always, Ash. I agree with you that it is important to set clear, measurable goals, which are actually achievable over the course of a calendar year, and to "reverse engineer" them into a series of smaller steps that are incremental and manageable. Writing one's goals down in a journal or notebook is an excellent way to organize one's thoughts, and to give them a sense of concrete "reality" which they would otherwise lack. On the subject of sharing goals to establish accountability, I have told all the serving staff at my favourite coffee shop/patisserie that one of my central New Year's Resolutions is to eat low carb...and that I will not be ordering pastries with my morning cup of coffee for the foreseeable future. As Siddhartha Gautama said: "The longest journey begins with a single step,"
You are very correct sir, sometimes what appears to be in insurmountable task can be achieved by breaking it down into numerous, smaller objectives. Loosing weight, stopping smoking or desisting from alcohol being prime examples.
I neither smoke, nor drink alcohol. And at the age of fifty-seven I have lost all taste for junk food, fast food, and just about anything that is deep fried. Being a quarter French, however, I love bread and pastries, and have set as a New Year's Resolution to drastically cut my daily carb intake. Joke: What is the scientific name for a gluten-free, low-carb, vegan brownie? -Compost. @@TheChapsGuide
Ay Ash, I'm like 12 years younger and I always feel that any changes doesn't have any major impact because my life is pretty much done. I know that people tend to say it's never too late but on the other hand most people have made their biggest steps in life way earlier.
Hopes are for dopes, you can only goal what you control. So make a resolution not to make any resolutions, except this one.😁 It's one you're sure to keep.
Happy new year, Ash - great advice as always! I'm curious to know, what do you do with all your historic paper-based journals? Do you have an ever expanding library at home, that you keep (and possibly refer back to for posterity, from time-to-time)? Or do you transfer paper-based notes to the Cloud?
I did this last year. I didn't realize all my goals but I did achieve most. I plan on making new ones this year and working harder at them and the ones I didn't finish last year. My reading was one that I did reach and I am planning on increasing that one. Thanks for the video Ash. Have a happy new year my friend. Cheers Ron
First! Hurrah! I’m living on Social Security, but my personal goal is to do some part time work - and contribute part of my earnings to charities that provide help to Ukrainian refugees. I’ll soon be leaving this world, but those poor wretches will still have to live in it. There are plenty of people who’ve helped me when I needed it, so - I’d like to pay it forward. Besides, I suspect that there are lots of chaps already buying you coffees, and I wouldn’t want you to be over caffeinated. Bad for the heart.
This is very encouraging. A topic that I have not heard you cover re self-improvement is a man's role as husband and father. For example, what makes a good father? What would you do the same, and what would you do differently? Or, what do you look for in a woman that would make her a good helpmate, and a good mother? Do you have anything to say about the ethical man's sex life?
I like the part about getting older! I'm going to be 52 in July, and I am particularly fond of the "zeros." Seems every time I hit a "zero" year, I feel better about life than I did during the prior decade.
Good stuff. Had a coach tell me when I was much younger that "a goal without a plan is just a wish." That advice has served me well over the years

It is unseasonably mild at the moment, I filmed that video on 29th Dec. What is happening to the world?

Hopes are for dopes, you can only goal what you control. So make a resolution not to make any resolutions, except this one.😁 It's one you're sure to keep.
Happy new year, Ash - great advice as always! I'm curious to know, what do you do with all your historic paper-based journals? All are stored in my bookcase and I do refer to them quite often.

I've got a pretty long list. Half of what's on the list is a carry-over from last year's Jan. 2023. LOL
All topics to unravel in the future sir. We are going to be leaning more deeply towards self improvement in future videos.
Wish there was a female equivalent! Most are too pretentious and too high maintenance. Love your videos.
