  • I hope you enjoy this video I've made to document the current state of the 2nd Street Tunnel. This historic part of DTLA has become a go-to spot for tagging in the past few years. The white reflective tile has lost much of its sheen, having been painted over and over and over again, in the ongoing battle between the city and graffiti artists. A few times a year, the tunnel is repainted with a fresh coat of white paint, and it screams "blank canvas" to anyone looking to make their mark on DTLA.
While I love a lot of graffiti and do really believe that much of it has artistic merit, I get more and more sad when I see the new coats of paint inch higher and higher, obscuring the white reflective tile that defines the look of the tunnel. The tile was a bold choice by the architect since it was sourced from Germany right after WW1. Had the tunnel construction really commenced during WW1, as it was meant to, then perhaps there would be an entirely different appearance. Would Bladerunner, Terminator, or Transformers have wanted to use the tunnel without its iconic reflective tile? Who knows, alternate realities are always a fun thing to consider, but I'll hope we see a project that can restore the tunnel to its original splendor in the reality we all call home.
Pictures in this video came from the Water and Power Associates website. Their pictures come from a variety of sources, like the LA Public Library and USC Digital Archives.

Good work. The “info” was kind of annoying because the point was the graff, not a history lesson on the actual tunnel. Funny cuz the first side was the better side when the txt was obscuring the footage
    Appreciate the effort tho

Im sorry to hear you found the text annoying. Im an LA history guide, so I included some historical info. The text goes through the history of the tunnel for about 90 seconds while leaving gaps in the text to see graffiti. There about 7 minutes of only graffiti after that. I'd recommend you skip the first minute or so.

How about you open your eyes more if you can't see. I find it to be good information that I didn't know about the 2nd ST Tunnel
