- Singapore Chinese New Year 2025 | Lion Dance and Dragon Dance at SAFRA Punggol
Lion and dragon dances are vibrant and energetic traditional performances that are an integral part of Chinese New Year celebrations in Singapore. Here's a closer look at both:
Lion Dance
Symbolism: The lion dance is believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and ward off evil spirits.
Performance:
Two performers operate the lion costume, one controlling the head and front legs, the other the back legs and tail.
The lion's movements, from playful prancing to dramatic leaps, are synchronized with drumbeats, cymbals, and gongs.
"Cai Qing" (採青), or "plucking the greens," is a common act where the lion collects and "eats" vegetables or red envelopes (ang baos) as a symbolic gesture of fortune.
Dragon Dance
Symbolism: The dragon symbolizes strength, power, and good fortune. The dance is said to bring rain for good harvests and general prosperity.
Performance:
A group of performers carry the dragon on poles, coordinating to make it "dance" in flowing, serpentine movements.
The dragon chases a pearl or a ball, representing wisdom and the pursuit of knowledge.
Dragons can range from a few meters to over 70 meters long.
