One last little kick before we end 2015. Oh and just for the record. this is what the videos would look like if I tried to upload every week, not investing much time in quality graphics and editing. Just saying.... MERRY CHRISTMAS/ HAPPY HOLIDAYS/ HAPPY NEW YEAR GEOGRAPEEPS!
They didn't sell it, singapore was still in british control and when austraila gained independence the british gave the island to austraila i guess? (Im not so sure.)
no but the next java island people from java traditionaly believe that the south sea very mystical because belong of the queen south sea kingdom its very sacred area , i think never heard that because you dont know the area south java sea culture and tradition
There’s a crazy myth going around; Singapore sold Christmas Island to Australia for $1. The myth is to widely accepted that it has become ‘truth’ in some people’s minds.
one time i was in a cab ( in singapore), and the cab driver went on a rant the whole ride about how australia bought christmas island and how it belongs to singapore. it was like a 10 minute ride (which is a lot for downtown singapore).
Thanks for this gift. You're getting so much better at your job. You've grown so much this year! I hope you continue to grow. I love Geography Now. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Barby!
Wow! Well done Paul, I cannot believe you did a segment on Christmas Island. I am actually born there in the early 60's and left the Island when I was about 8 years old. My family and I are now residing in beautiful Australia and we managed to return to the island about 10 years ago for a holiday. CX is so beautifully unique and a naturalist paradise, the migration of the red crabs, exotic birds like the Golden Bosun are some examples the island have to offer. Btw the detention centre is actually very well run and the refugees are extremely well looked after, it has got the best view of the Indian Ocean and spectacular views of the cliffs and golf course. I love your programme.
God Bless and hope things are well for you and your family. Also, it'd be cool if you did geography videos for more territories as well (like the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar or Canary Islands).
+Bradley Maxwell 1,000+ of the residents of the island being in detention should certainly be mentioned. Also their largest source of employment, and revenue.
Of course we cut him slack, For example the impression of the island being invaded by crabs is wrong ... the crabs live in the forest and go to the beach to breed ... they are permanent residents not invaders. But the immigration detention centre is THE thing the island is known for.
I'm Australian and all I knew about the island before this was that it's where we dump our refugees. There's a massive detention centre there which has committed a lot of human rights violations...
+SantomPh Erm... When did you hear that? If anything we brought people from the camp to Australian High Security prisons (Several New Zealend biker members who started the riots).
+Benjamin Rome Clarke the detention center there had a overpopulation issue but apart from that i hadn't heard of any human right violations. where did u hear about these abuses?
Christmas Island, where Australia confuses itself with Nazi Germany. I mean, we might call them detention centers but I think we can all agree they aren't much better then prison camps old Hitler and his fellas used.
+Rick Locker Um just remember it was the British who "invented" Concentration Camps during the Boer War, you know, the one where Breaker Morant & his mates got shot! The Nazis turned them into Death Camps true, but Australia was on the side of the guys who started Concentration Camps. & no Australian Detention Centre (not Center!) has deliberately starved people to death like the Brits did in South Africa! Also, comparing what the Nazis did (& no not all Germans where Nazis) with Christmas Island is a pathetic cheap shot! I agree with helping genuine refugees, but not "economic refugees" ie the 1s who paid people smugglers big bikkies to ride in death trap "boats" from Indonesia to Australia! How many Syrian refugees could we help now if we hadn't let the "economic refugees" come pouring in? PS No, I'm not some right wing nut job like Andrew Bolt either!
I was waiting for the "theirs also a giant Australian Concentration camp that the Australian media can be jailed for talking about, and that it is severely overpopulated and understaffed"
Look up Manus Island Detention centre and christmas island detention centre. Both while sort of on Australian territory or also not, same as Guantanamo Bay. Guantanamo as it is not on US territory, is why they can torture the inmates and not face US law. (To my understanding) and its the same in Australia, with the detainees of Manus and Christmas facing horrible circumstances
Josh Clarkie listen i can believe that but what i can't believe is the Australian media being jailed if talking about it. Not even the U.S. does that with Guantanamo. That's the biggest insult to freedom of speech in the western world I've ever heard of. Australia is no better than China and North Korea.
Hey barby I'm a young geographer ( very) but these videos have really helped me understand new things like diplomatic relations and I just think that you are doing amazing! And I would love to tell you what know about different countries
I hate how inconsistent we always are when it comes to classifying languages. How does it makes sense to call English, German, Dutch and Danish different languages in the Germanic language family, but to call all the languages in the Chinese family a single language, and refer to Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese and all the other individual languages as "dialects"?
+Robert Faber It has to do with structure and semantics. Although Mandarin is still the largest dialect, there technically isn't a full "Chinese" language. Many Cantonese speakers will still tell you they speak "Chinese" because they are ethnically Chinese and from China, yet they have a whole different system on communication.
+Robert Faber its a matter of politics. china saying that all of its languages are just 1 language is one way in which the country is unified and homogenised
darlixjaffa Yep, pretty much a weird way of oppresion, meaning claiming you don't speak 'Chinese' yet speak one of the other 'dialects (as your language)' then you are against the status quo, which also means your are claiming your own nation-state or something along those lines.
Thank you Barby for the Xmas gift video, loved it, I'm hook on your channel. Sending healing thoughts for your Dad, may he recover promptly and fully. Thank you for the knowledge and entertainment you bring to us all with your channel.
My city, in Brazil, is called Natal, which is portuguese for Christmas. It was founded in December 25, 1599, and is located in the northeast of the Brazilian coast.
thank you so much Barby! were catching up on your last two videos on a holiday in New Zealand after a heavy Christmas dinner when this popped up. have a blessed Christmas and all the best wishes to your family!
I second the idea of covering Easter Island during... Easter time. By that time and if nothing happens Chile will have been covered before but Easter Island or Rapa Nui has enough history to have its own video.
that's cool, you should do a video about easter island for easter and if there are other islands named after holidays you should videos about them during their respective holidays
(1:54) I'm not sure, but that looks like Hawai'i's State Fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a (Triger Fish). Thanks Barby! I know so much more about Christmas Island than I ever learned on the Discovery Channel.
I just found you on youtube and love your videos. Caught this one today and it got me thinking about how your Dad is doing? Sounds like maybe he wasn't doing to well. I'll say a prayer for him just in case! Keep uploading! Pastor Tom
historically Christmas island was named Keris Mas (Golden Keris/Malay sword) during Temasek(Singapore) era...and there even a classic malay movie from singapore entitled Keris Mas, loosely based on old malay stories about how this island is related to the Malay archipelago.
Hey Barby! Any chance you can add Svalbard to your "to do" list as a "stand alone" project (or give it some extra airtime during the Norway episode when the time comes) Cheers!
Great videos so far. Very interesting and entertaining . Looking forward to when you do the Republic of Ireland in 2016. It will be a special year for us as it will be 100 years since the 1916 rising for Irish freedom . I still love the UK by the way :) Happy New Year
Barby, near the Christmas island is the Cocos islands. My father said if you zoom it to that island, you can see the street names are in malay/indonesian (i already looked at that, and it's true), even it's australia's.
Deers is correct when referring to multiple species of deer. For example: 'The Deers of North America' would be correct grammar for a book title. Let's say you see a group of 7 whitetail deer. 'Look at all those deer over there'. would be correct in that instance.
There are flying fish, well kind of, exocoetidae are called flying fish and they make very long jumps out of water aided by very big pectoral fins that kind of look like wings
+geographynow Thanks for the video. Knew about the crabs, but learned something new about the demographics. Glad to hear your dad is doing better. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
I saw the flag of Christmas Island in my local Outback Steak House and I NEVER KNEW WHAT IT WAS. It bugged the hell outa me. I would like to take this time to thank Mr. Paul Barbato for finally answering this question.
Sorry for the late response, this particular Outback Steak House is in Lowell Massachusetts. I also just did some research, this is YET ANOTHER restaurant I figured was located all across the USA, but isn't. Just New England, same with (for the most part) Dunkin Donuts, and Papa Gino's.

Its clearly a dog looking to the left
*right
Haha! Very appropriate. :D
* once seen. It cannot be unseen*
I Saw that to
looks more like a cat
Probably Singapore regrets selling it because they don't have any land anymore to expand now :p
They didn't sell it, singapore was still in british control and when austraila gained independence the british gave the island to austraila i guess? (Im not so sure.)
no but the next java island people from java traditionaly believe that the south sea very mystical because belong of the queen south sea kingdom its very sacred area , i think never heard that because you dont know the area south java sea culture and tradition
a lot of singaporen still hates it the lim hock seng sold it
There’s a crazy myth going around; Singapore sold Christmas Island to Australia for $1. The myth is to widely accepted that it has become ‘truth’ in some people’s minds.
Well, people can now build islands in the middle of the ocean now, can't they?
one time i was in a cab ( in singapore), and the cab driver went on a rant the whole ride about how australia bought christmas island and how it belongs to singapore. it was like a 10 minute ride (which is a lot for downtown singapore).
Thanks for this gift. You're getting so much better at your job. You've grown so much this year! I hope you continue to grow. I love Geography Now. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Barby!
This definitely was the best channel discovery I made on 2015, merry Christmas and greetings from Ecuador!

Really hope you did an Easter island one at Easter!!!
God Bless and hope things are well for you and your family.
Also, it'd be cool if you did geography videos for more territories as well (like the Falkland Islands, Gibraltar or Canary Islands).
No mention of the Christmas Island Imigration Detention Center
Yeah, that's strange considering that's what Christmas Island is mostly known for recently.
+Bradley Maxwell 1,000+ of the residents of the island being in detention should certainly be mentioned. Also their largest source of employment, and revenue.
Not really a Christmassy thought.
Or the old nuclear testing zone, where the British and Americans detonated several nuclear and thermonuclear bombs.

I was waiting for the "theirs also a giant Australian Concentration camp that the Australian media can be jailed for talking about, and that it is severely overpopulated and understaffed"
That's why he didn't talk about it. And if you don't respond within a week, rip
P.S. This is just a joke
wait WHAT!?
hahaha I'm not dead yet, I haven't had any random knocks on my door.
Look up Manus Island Detention centre and christmas island detention centre. Both while sort of on Australian territory or also not, same as Guantanamo Bay. Thanks for doing a review of my island home, bro... Appreciate it :)
I was born n raised on the island n still am happily living on C.I 👍
It's called the Mid-Autumn Festival, not the Moon Cake Festival.
u can call it the mooncake Festival (if you dont wanna sound too educational-ish)
SantomPh Thanks for the information!
+SantomPh Thank you for explaining that so I didn't have to.

That's a very good point and got the potential of a debate on a other UA-cam channel.
That's actually a political thing rather than an actual linguistic thing.

Since you did Bandiaterra or however you spelled, I'm suspicious of this kind of videos so I better Google this XD
+Esteban Ortiz LOL you probably aren't the only one! This is actually real man. Bandiaterra was a good joke though.
+VladSparr 95 I knew Bandiaterra wasn't real as soon as i read the title of the video.
Christmas Island is very real. :) Here in Australia we hear about it all the time.
+Dendarang hey that's an interesting thought but it doesn't work for my native language that's Spanish... Where England is "Inglaterra".
how tf u never hear of christmas island
Awh no flying fish? Like really? I thought it would be a Christmas miracle.. Merry Christmas anyway.
There was no record of the Red crab migration until one or two decades after the two rat species became extinct.

It was founded in December 25, 1599, and is located in the northeast of the Brazilian coast.

historically Christmas island was named Keris Mas (Golden Keris/Malay sword) during Temasek(Singapore) era...and there even a classic malay movie from singapore entitled Keris Mas, loosely based on old malay stories about how this island is related to the Malay archipelago.

Barby, near the Christmas island is the Cocos islands. My father said if you zoom it to that island, you can see the street names are in malay/indonesian (i already looked at that, and it's true), even it's australia's.
Merry Christmas Barby 😃 and geographers !
I feel it looks like a Yorkshire Terrier.
Deers is correct when referring to multiple species of deer. For example: 'The Deers of North America' would be correct grammar for a book title.
Let's say you see a group of 7 whitetail deer. 'Look at all those deer over there'. would be correct in that instance.
Great video. And have a merry Christmas dude and to all the Geography peeps around the world. Be excellent to each other and party on dudes!
There are flying fish, well kind of, exocoetidae are called flying fish and they make very long jumps out of water aided by very big pectoral fins that kind of look like wings
Whoa, I didn't realize there was another Christmas Island besides Kiritimati!
Christmas or Mooled on Christmas island . funny .
wish a prompt recovery for your father .
+geographynow Thanks for the video. Knew about the crabs, but learned something new about the demographics. Glad to hear your dad is doing better. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
1:53 That is the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a the national fish of Hawaii
The island's shape resembles the state of New York
Thank you for the wonderful video
No deer here on christmas island! Great that you took an interest though :)
i hope he does more videos like this, about smaller islands or citys
I saw the flag of Christmas Island in my local Outback Steak House and I NEVER KNEW WHAT IT WAS. It bugged the hell outa me.
I would like to take this time to thank Mr. Paul Barbato for finally answering this question.
Wow, where is this steak house?
Sorry for the late response, this particular Outback Steak House is in Lowell Massachusetts.
I also just did some research, this is YET ANOTHER restaurant I figured was located all across the USA, but isn't. Just New England, same with (for the most part) Dunkin Donuts, and Papa Gino's.
