  • Roasting coffee beans is a craft driven by art and science. These raw cherry seeds are transformed through heat but can be much more than a burnt and bitter liquid. Lab Notes Coffee pursues that perfect craft cup with each and every small-batch roast.

The coffee industry has seen a lot of changes in recent years, with an emphasis on craft coffee and small batch roasting. This trend has led to a renewed interest in the quality of coffee, and how it is roasted. If you're looking to get the most out of your coffee, small batch roasting is the way to go. In this blog post, we'll explore what small batch roasting is, and how it can improve the flavor and quality of your coffee. We'll also give you some tips on how to get started. So, if you're ready to take your coffee game to the next level, read on!
    What is coffee roasting?
Coffee roasting is the process of heating coffee beans in order to bring out their natural flavor. The roasting process can be done using a variety of methods, but most small batch coffee roasters use a drum roaster. This type of roaster slowly rotates the beans as they are heated, ensuring an even roast.
The length of time that the beans are roasted for is one of the most important factors in determining the final flavor of the coffee. Roasting times can range from a few minutes to over half an hour, depending on the desired results. Lighter roasts will have more acidity and brighter flavors, while darker roasts will be more full-bodied with deeper flavors.
Coffee roasting is both an art and a science, and it takes a lot of practice to perfect. The best way to learn is by doing, so we suggest getting your hands on some green coffee beans and giving it a try yourself!
The benefits of small batch coffee roasting
Small batch coffee roasting has many benefits that make it the perfect choice for crafting the ultimate cup of coffee. Perhaps the most important benefit is that it allows for more control over the roast, resulting in a more consistent product.
In addition, small batch roasting results in less waste and fewer beans that are burnt or otherwise unusable. This means that you'll get more bang for your buck, and end up with a higher quality product overall.
Finally, small batch roasting simply tastes better. The fresher beans and more controlled roast result in a cup of coffee that is richer and more full-flavored. If you're looking for the best possible cup of coffee, small batch roasting is the way to go.
How to roast coffee at home
There are a few things you need to know before roasting your own coffee at home. First, it's important to choose the right coffee beans. Make sure to select a high-quality coffee bean that is meant for roasting. Next, you'll need to decide on the roast profile you want. Do you want a light, medium, or dark roast?
Once you've selected your beans and roast profile, it's time to start roasting! To roast coffee at home, you'll need a coffee roaster. There are many different types of coffee roasters available on the market, so choose one that fits your budget and needs.
To start roasting, preheat your roaster according to manufacturer's instructions. Then, add your beans and begin roasting. Roast times will vary depending on the type of beans and the desired roast profile. Keep an eye on the beans and stop roasting when they reach the desired color.
Once roasted, remove the beans from the roaster and let them cool. Then, store them in an airtight container until ready to use. Enjoy your freshly roasted coffee!

Hopefully, you've noticed a trend. In 2020 we published 6 videos. In 2021 we published 4 videos. So far in 2022 we've now published 4 videos and have 6 more already shot and in editing. If we can maintain the momentum, we're aiming to publish a new episode every week this year. It's always been our dream to make this our full-time job and this year we're doing everything we can to make that a reality.
Unfortunately being at the mercy of the UA-cam algorithm makes that much more challenging. Regardless of how many views they get, every video requires the same effort and time commitment. Each one takes weeks to make from all the coordination, filming, and editing. Yet some of the videos get millions of views while others only get thousands. We just keep rolling the dice and betting on ourselves to succeed. Liking the video and leaving a comment is a huge help but sharing the video is an even better way to help the channel grow. So if you enjoy what you see, consider texting the video to some friends or family who may also be interested in seeing these stories.
Of course, sharing is free and easy, it's something everyone can do, but if you believe in what we're doing and can afford to go one step further, consider supporting our work via the Patreon we just launched. You'll get access to some of our behind-the-scenes processes and really get to see how we work. We are a small group of filmmaker friends who just want to keep doing what we love. If you can help support that, we will be forever grateful: www.patreon.com/PARAGRAPHIC
But we know there are many people on the internet competing for the money in your wallet so if you can't afford it, or simply don't think it's worth it, we completely understand. We will still tell these stories. Hopefully, they are as much a joy to watch as they are to make. If so, please consider liking, commenting, subscribing, and SHARING the video.
    Thank you.

Channels like this that are educational and beautifully shot- as well as personal- they just don't exist. Its why I subscribed awhile ago and have watched every video since. And one better- these short films are encouraging! If these videos could be displayed to schools imagine the impact it would have on those young hopes and dreams that otherwise see a grey and calculated future.
There are plenty of interesting people with great projects; from car culture and paints, to leather crafts and woodworking. Truly an endless supply of content to be brought to light. Good Luck Paragraphic!

Excellent, thanks! Especially would agree that most of coffee in shops is overroasted. I'm roasting coffee at home more than 10 years, and have tried about 100 different kinds of coffee beans, from different regions (from coffee, directly bought from farmer at Cuba to Chinese one from Aliexpress ;)
But still, my favorite way of making coffee - "cinnamon" roast (drop it just 10-15 seconds after first crackling started) and cook it in "turka", made of thin(!!!) thermo-resistent ceramics.
Initially I've used "baharaj cawa" from Syria, now - only these ceramic pots.
IMHO taste depends significantly on the water quality, temperature, cooking duration, material of coffee pot. Seems like thin ceramics is the best (special porcelain).
Can write a lot about coffee :)
Sadly, most of people don't understand what the coffee is. They drinking some cheap crap, pushed by marketologysts... So, at least here, in Russia, real coffee is not popular enough to pay off cafe or coffee shop. Unfortunately :(
