How To DE-GOOGLE Your Phone!
Вставка

- (Note: graphene only works on Pixel phones, if you have a non pixel phone you can instal lineage, but it’s a more complicated process)
Google is all over our phones. The amount of data that they’re collecting about us is astronomical, regardless of whether we’re using an iPhone or an Android.
But why does it matter if Google knows so much about us?
First, that data is being siphoned up by governments: Not just the US government, but governments all over the world. While we’re probably not doing anything wrong, what is considered “normal” or “acceptable” today may not be tomorrow. Regimes come and go, culture changes, but that data is forever.
Second, carving out some privacy in our digital lives is important. Surveillance has dramatic effects on a society: We self-censor and conform when we know we’re being watched.
Luckily there are lots of ways that we can protect our data so that it’s not all collected and stored in a permanent record attached to our identity.
I went to a “de-google your phone” install party the other weekend, where we learnt how to install a new operating system on our phones that will better protect our privacy.
We installed “GrapheneOS”, a privacy and security-enhancing phone operating system recommended by Snowden. We also downloaded some awesome google-alternative apps.
In this video I’ll teach you how to do this too. (NOTE: GRAPHENE ONLY WORKS WITH PIXEL PHONES)

It is actually not that difficult to live a Google-free lifestyle, enjoying almost all the things you would normally do on your phone, without compromising your privacy.
Huge thank you to members of Boston Zcash for their help organizing this de-googling installation party, Kieran from Railgun for his help with research, and the many other privacy experts I consulted!
I’m considering offering phones on my website with graphene and all the core apps that I use preinstalled. Visit nbtv.media/essentialprivacy if interested in learning more!

Privacy should be default. We shouldn't be spending hours doing all this at the first place. What a world we are living in :(
Yeah :(
In a country ruled by private capital, the population is expected to be seen and not heard.
If the market is there, then the products will come.
A world where government sponsored spy agencies. Along with private corporations. Are data mining without the public’s permission. Collating the data using super computers. Then tasking artificial intelligence software to harass and manipulate people. For the selfish financial gains.

After working in the IT business since the 70s I can tell you definitively that google isn’t the only one tracking you, just a player in the game. You have no idea, I promise you.
Not so hard to know. If it can be done, its probably done. If its profitable on top, its most likely done.
Downside of "everything is for sale" world.
Me too I promise you that SIM cards do that since then onward and I am telling you without flaw that since the 90s probably before they where even able to see what towers your using and the distance from each one
I'm going to stop you right there with your next factoid and tell you that telephone companies even study the layout of each city and strategically place each cell phone tower so now they can get a latitude and longitude and because they know that this information is priceless data they will go too extreme extents of lobbying and others to get that plot to put that tower there if you look at any city in North America all cell phone towers are in the rural areas of the city on the outskirts and you'll always see the towers blinking in the distance
Oh I have an idea man.
I'm a black hat ha....
Your own carriers track you bahaha.
@@mcgoofe1871 ha ha ha 😂 yeah they do since you're a black Hatter you should know that there is code
And how would you know if the OS the operating system is separate from the transponder and receiver and SIM card
Yes the SIM card is in communication with the OS but the SIM card does not need to communicate everything to the OS just the transponder and receiver
Just because you're a black Hatter and you know how to code doesn't mean you know everything humble yourself and be taught sometimes without your returned sarcasm
And since you're such a novice
Can you please tell me why the criminal world has always treated SIM cards like a big tracking GPS chip well because that's exactly what it is
You know how to find information on the internet you bragged about it anyways then go and find the telecommunication companies that fight tooth and nail to put up their radio/cell towers
It's strange with no or very sparse population that telecommunication companies would put up bidding wars for plots outside city limits they're tall and they blink you can see them if you pay attention to the foreground of the city
The reason why they fight to put their towers there is to triangulate and provide the best service but it's to trangulate to know how far away you are from the last three cell towers you were between
Your GSM and your GPS location and timestamped is sent through SMS through your phone's transponder to your carrier
Your phone has a no need to know to your OS essentially treating your OS like the president of the United States within not need to know basis for classified information
Your phone no matter how you secure it
It's hooking it up with a SIM card that tracks you spies on you knows who you talk to knows what you say
The criminal world witch you brag to be a part of knows this 100% because they have lived and breathed it and have went through Court given such evidence towards their conviction
So your not making much sense other then being a troll a novice troll

Great intro and thanks for spreading the work on GrapheneOS! The installation and first steps have changed a little since then. So I put up a video explaining it - the 2023 version for Pixel 4a up to Pixel 7. Just in case somebody is looking for an update.
My main concern are monopolies as they tend to serve themselves rather than the user. I try to get alternatives and this was quite engaging and informative. Thank you: )
this is correct and its not only computer based either.
She recommends buying a Google phone, so this video's recommendation is odd, to say the least.
@@earlysda Its very confusing, I agree. Apparently only googles phones have the security architecture to support the software properly, although you can install it on any phone.
Thats the story. It does seem sus though.
You're slowly turning into a privacy channel, love it!

As per all my other videos, no I didn't delete your comment. UA-cam auto deletes comments all the time. If yours disappears, try posting again in various forms until it sticks, and good luck! 🙏
Also, graphene is designed specifically for Pixel phones. if you have another kind of android you can potentially install lineage OS instead, but the process isn't as streamlined.
Finally, because so many people have commented "But Pixel is a Google phone!" -- Yes. Here is a link in case you're interested in understanding why GrapheneOS only supports pixel phones: www.reddit.com/r/GrapheneOS/comments/htwm9t/comment/fyjjq9z/

I’m in the market for a new phone I’m not addicted to any platform. I’d be willing to try something different message me if you decide to sell phones with a different OS and different apps to try out. I am new to your channel your videos are very informative I’ve watched only about 6 of them and I’ve learned so much already thanks for putting the time and effort into your videos.
First time on the channel and I was instantly hooked. Completely new information for me. I enjoy rooting and modifying the system ROM of the cell phone, getting rid of all those applications that I don't like or don't regularly use. I had never heard of ''AURORA'' and this is extremely intriguing to me. I'll search for a Pixel in my cell phone collection to test. Sure: new follower and a big "like".
Welcome!! :)
Thank you for being one of the only channels on this subject that REALLY dumb it down and explain the details to those of us who aren't as familiar with this world. I don't feel as discouraged to try this out now!
I'm really glad to hear that!!!
100% true
lol not dumbed down enough for me.
Give you money to Google for a phone in order to get out of Google?
This is an odd video.
@@earlysda You say that as if there's an easy and good alternative, but there's not. If you want a good phone with good privacy your options are very limited.
The irony, one of the most de-googlable Android phones is Google’s Pixel. Can anything be done about the microcode blob?
Another irony is that she uses Google's UA-cam to teach you how to de-google a phone.

I also appreciate all the app suggestions, as a practical way to get started with the new OS. Thanks very much.

A great video. Thank you very much Naomi. I’ll test run it first with an old Note 10 Plus I have🙂
For anyone using the Pixel 6a: After you have initially updated your phone with all the latest security updates, you will need to factory reset the phone before starting the graphene install process. This will allow the OEM unlock feature to be available. If you don't factory reset after updating the phone the OEM unlock will be greyed out. This only seems to be for the 6a and not the 6, 6 pro or 7 phones.
I also couldn't get windows update to install the fastboot patch so I had to manually download the pixel USB driver from google and update the driver via windows device manager. There are more detailed instructions for this on the graphene install instructions page. FYI using type-c USB 3 port on my laptop meant flashing the OS was super fast (only a few mins).
Great guide :-) , thank you so much 😄!
Thanks! Just got my new (used) Pxl 6 and am readying to take the plunge. Are there any forums or other resources you recommend in case I run into issues?
This also goes the same for US and Canadian phones, the OEM option will be either greyed out or completely not visible (for whatever reason). I think most people would need an international unlocked version of their phone to do this. It sucks, because I would so do this on my main phone but the option just simply isn't there.

thank you for this. I used to do alot of phone hacking back in the day but i am so far behind the curve now its nice to see that there is someone keeping up with it!
This is so helpful! I’m actually getting a new iPhone in a couple of days and may incorporate some of these ideas.
It would be cool to see some steps on how to interact with shared posts from people who don’t prioritize privacy. Obviously most people share UA-cam, TikTok, and Instagram links and I doubt just viewing them in private helps. Having a sandbox would be SUPER nice.
you cant install graphene or f-droid in a iPhone
It's impossible to download software made for android on an IOS device even with jailbreaking it
Great info! Thank you!

There is the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). AOSP is Android without google apps or GAPS. AOSP also has a broader range of phones that it can be flashed to. You will need to flash the drivers, Fdroid and Aurora separately.

Your next smartphone might have a camera that’s always watching
Chip maker Qualcomm argues that “always-on” cameras can make phones more secure.
This is really good information. It's nice to see that people are pushing for changes like this. It's become so difficult for everyone to break away now. They have google to do everything. Control their lights, wallets, GPS, and that's just a few. They did such an amazingly sneaky job of making themselves an integral part of people's lives.
Yes, those very invasive "conveniences" are nothing but spying/monitoring/tracking/surveillance gizmos & gadgets!
The sad thing is they weren't really sneaky at all, it was clear and obvious what they were doing but everybody turned a blind eye to it because they wanted the apps, the convenience. We only have ourselves to blame.
And google is becoming an oliguard....more powerful than government..... And unanswerable to anyone!!!!!......they can cut you off without warning or even explanation
What is "good information" about giving money to Google for their phone, then de-googling it?
I am going to try this after I see a few more reviews = Thank you

*Privacy is something that should be included in every device, every operative system and app but they're way too interested in my habits to let go*
Jaja
And just how would/could you verify that the privacy settings do anything other than make you feel good? I code in several languages and there's no way I could look at open-source code and figure out what's going on in 10s of thousands of lines of code. That's just delusional thinking. Even the OS development teams spend days or weeks testing and debugging because it's not obvious what it's going to do and if it behaves as intended. People need to stop thinking privacy is achievable. It's not. You have to be smart in not giving away or entering data that might be harmful, but certain data like where you go, who you call, etc, that's not a direct input by you is not possible to isolate from systems unless you write the entire code yourself. Good luck with that.
Hahahaha,how old are ya'??? Dude😅😅😅
@@SchneiderMesawho was that question addressed too?

With all of the worries about the phone being tracked when "turned off", I'm surprised that the folks behind Graphene don't use a phone like the Samsung XCover Pro that has a removable battery.
They only use phones whose SOC allows their security features
Theres no privacy problem with powered off smartphones

This is great. Didnt even think it was that easy. Oh how sweet it would be to convert an old blackberry etc
indeed
It wouldn't work properly. Blacberry dont have back button, drawer button etc... It's like installing iOS on pixel it wouldn't work properly. They are not using the same framework.
thank you, amazing
You can use the Google play app. Because if you are having problems with banking apps work, or getting push notifications, or SMS messages you have to have google play services for them to work because a lot of companies push their information through google. But you can get play store service and all that and turn off all the permission that you don't want. Then you have to enable it to run in the background or something like that so you can still use your phone and get all the banking apps and SMS stuff. You do it all through the settings
Awesome video! Non-Google Android phones are indeed viable and more people should know.
Unfortunately, Google still holds control over Android with things like Safetynet - device modification checks that utilise the hardware TPM; and GMS-dependent apps which rely on or just refuse to work without GMS. This means that using such a device has app compatibility implications.
Fortunately though, Android is still open source, and currently 95% of all the commercial apps that you _actually_ need¹ don't do Safetynet checks nor are GMS-dependent. Even if Google manages to convince all commercial apps to do that, there is still the option to have two separate devices (main for FOSS and other for GMS). Then there's the option of Linux OSs and open source devices, a nice upcoming alternative to the Google owned Android.
¹For the other 5% of commercial apps that you actually need, sometimes they have web versions
P.S. in what world does de-googling parties exist in because that just sounds amazing
that 5% is problematic tho because it is often stuff like banking apps or some goverment corona apps and what not. Sometimes you can manage to fool safety net with some workarounds and microG but yeah it is hard.
NB, I would be very interested in getting a phone preinstalled with your recommendations. Please let me know when/if ...
Thanks, Naomi.
