Wheels are too confusing, it makes me want to quite the sport. I just want to have faster engaging hub and I have to watch 30 videos just to understand what I need to change to get a better hub....
Nothing is easy,it requires time and dedication to learn anything.decide what you need to learn and not learn.for instance,if this stuff interest you and you are mechanically inclined then learn it at a pace that works for you so eventally you can build your own wheels and help other people out as well.if your not mechanically inclined then pay someone else to do it at a bike shop.its that simple.but repetion is the mother of all learning,blood sweet and tears they say.learning is failing and then continueing on to fail again and learn from your failures,but complaining about it does nothing.

I love when I watch a video and I find it really well presented, informative, not boring and I barely notice who has delivered it, they did such a good job. In this day and age of he/she/they BS , its refreshing to just be able to say that person did a great job and it doesnt matter who or what they are. I learn so much from this presenter. 141 QR had me stumped to find a reasonably priced replacement for a while, but some Hope wheels and changeable end caps did the trick.
Can you give me more details on that please?
141 QR or sometimes called '141 Boost' uses boost 148mm wheels with QR (either hub or end caps) to reduce the width to 141mm. They are a strange beast as budget friendly wheels are 135mm/142mm. Even finding hubs to relace a wheel can be tricky. So you end up having to pay a bit more for them.
It's a wonder Anna didn't mention them, as 141 QR seems to appear on some lower specs of some 'better' than department store bikes.
Best to avoid them if you can.

also would a 141 hub fit onto a 148 bike?
@@doubleL_S 148 would be a through axle bike, while 141 is a dropout/QR frame. A good brand (Hope etc.) boost hub which had removable QR end caps installed (so 141mm) could have the end caps swapped to 12mm through axle, which would then take it to 148mm. Normally you have to go the other way though, as they seem to come std as 142 or 148 through axle. A fixed 141 QR hub is set at 141mm, so no to getting one of those to fit in at 148 frame (plus different dropout/frame type).

26" still does the job nicely for me, a lot of other wheels sizes honestly seem pointless and are just around to convince many to buy into it… but end of the day each to their own.
I'm 195cm tall and 26" is just ridiculous for me. So yeah, to each their own : a lot of people defending 26" just think what is good for them should be good for everybody else, and I hate that.

Great show and well presented!! How did GMBN know that I have been seriously researching wheelsets the last couple of days - cookies? As part of my research, I realized the many varied differences, but once one determines what type of riding one is going to do, then one can somewhat narrow it down.
My problem is that one spends close to $4500 on a bike and one only receives mid-range components, thereby leading me to research what parts I want to change. Ultimately, decided that I would wear out first some parts and then just change the brakes and remove the pawl setup to a ratchet setup. And because of the rising costs and long waiting time to get bikes repaired, decided to switch to a center lock disc brake as part of the brake change as I want to make it easier for me to maintain the bike. Lastly, I am not a "technical" rider and prefer to use my bike more as a mix of trail (not too technical) and cross country, with the emphasis on making use of the many off-road trails (mostly through the woods) to go from city to city, yet provide me the flexibility to go down narrower or steeper trails if required. Once again, great show, one really learns a lot here!!

Anna, nice job. Your description was on point. Nice work. I love Industry nine because they make their own spokes out of Aluminum. However I love Sapiem stainless spokes in polished, at I love black brass nipples., and there are lots of good rims. I loved this video. MY DREAM Wheels would be Chris King hub read with Shimano microspline, and and microsplinr rotor attachment, polished Sapiem j bend stainless spokes, black brass nipples and zip moto carbon rims, 32 hole back wheel with a 28 hole front wheel. Also Vittoria tubeless Tyres. Orange Seal sealant, and some form of super lite tire inserts.

I have always thought about carbon, but at 135 pounds and riding a 50 pound and 60 pound ebike and a specialized enduro at lift bike parks I tend to chicken out and go for aluminum. My go to is dt swiss 511 32 hole with 54 tooth 350 hubs.

Hi everyone i have a question is it possible to put road or gravel tires on a 26er wheelset?
Regarding aluminium nipple corrosion; both of my Specialized 2009 stump jumper wheels needed replacement of all spokes after a couple of years on Norwegian winter salted roads.

Being an old MX rider & now mainly riding Trials & Enduro type riding, i've always been under the impression that most things need a bit of flex in them, i'm talking everything from frames, wheels , handlebars etc ?

Your sound guys need to sort out the high frequency squeel on recent videos, including this one. Do you have 10 old CRT TVs on in your studio or something? If you can't hear it, ask someone younger to point it out (it's coming through via your mic, so probably a light in your studio)
My newest mtb has 25 mm wide wheels whit 29x2,40 tires and it's a xc mtb
You can also get stainless steel nipples. Personally I don't recommend them, as they don't tend to fail and strip their threads under extreme loads like brass or ali ones do. Instead they are so tough that under excess load they pull themselves right through the aluminium or carbon rim making it a very expensive failure.

1) wheels
2) rims
3) disc brake rotors/discs 180mm, 6 Bolt
4) hub
5) cassette (same as mtb?)?
6) road tyres (do i need the same size width as my chunky MTB ones - 27.5" x 2.60"?)
I need a rear wheel. I hope I can replace my 29 in without changing gear sets. Not a disc break.

Btw I have a Mavic enduro 27.5" wheelset of 2015: 24 bladespokes in the front, 20 bladespokes on the rear and a lot other unique "features".

Shimano 12 sp has a different driver that 9-11 does not fit. So, not compatible

Can we have a video on MTB tires that aren't absurdly priced like some of the Maxxis offerings? I absolutely refuse to pay anything more than $60 for a tire for an MTB, considering I spend nearly the same for my dirtbike, and I will sooner pay someone for a take-off tire than I will allow my money to support any of these companies charging $70, $80, and even $90 for a tire.
I would love for my money to go to a company that charges a reasonable amount for tires, and I know Specialized and Continental seem to have decent offerings for non-Maxxis pricing.
Hi GMBN! I have a question, is it normal to have 36 spokes on front wheel and 32 spokes on rear wheel and not same hub? I am going to buy rear hub only but it has only 32H and my rim have 36H, I have to buy rim also.
Is it normal to have that kind of different spokes count?
If anything you would tend to have more spokes out back than at the front, but to be honest, wheels with 32 spokes are strong enough these days, so we wouldn't be going out of our way to look for a 36 spoke wheel.
Wel I have a Vitus Sommet 29 , but I don't like the 29nr wheels to sluggish and the wheels flex to much. So I'm going back to 27.5 wheels.

Just a couple additions, Bladed spokes are not just different, they are MUCH more aerodynamic!! Brass nipples are either black or chrome colored, not brass color. Otherwise a good vid

i want to ride my enduro mtb to work.
Its a Propain - Spindrift 2021 with obviously massive tires (Big betty) = massive rolling resisance.
My idea is to buy a cheap 2nd wheelset with the same casette (
chaning wheelsets twice a week seems like a better/easy/cheap-long-term idea then changing Tires AND sealent twice a week (?!).
do i need to set up the derailleur everytime i change wheelset or will it match perfectly when changing wheels?

their is boost QR which is 141 x 5mm
There are a few options for layup when it comes to carbon. Go for something heavier with t700 for mtb as it has a little more give.
Go straight pull on the back and jbend on the front for the ideal combo.
I had XC wheels with 28 spokes and always broke them, I have 32 and no issues
my mavics have 24 spokes, zero probles, my weight 74kg

I find it hillarious that the difference between 28 inch and 29 inch wheels is in the tire and not the rim as these rims have the exact same diameter. No wonder people get confused. 🙄

Nice guide. The only thing left is for manufactures to stop being dumb and use some kind of axle standards just like how front wheels have pretty much have stopped.. well reinventing the wheel.
By that i mean there should be standard threaded axles that screw into the chainstay. Why does every single bike need a 'unique' design just for a bleddy thru axle (Spacers/tapered etc).
Like universal derailleur hangers. We need a STANDARD. And not NEW standards every few months. BB30 anyone.. pressfit..
Especially since you were flashing around those nice Spank Vibrocore Rims you really should have mentioned Nipple-Head Shape and - Size and Nipple Washers considering that picking out the correct spokes and nipples for Spank is a f***ing nightmare...
Don't get me wrong, very happy with my wheels but Spank spicifically does NOT make building your own wheels easier.

No mention of maximum weight loading. your advice for non e bikes is ok but motorised bikes require wheels to comply to actual Build specifications. Not having that certification in a accident will affect any claims you may have regarding failure or accident
Small comment/correction? I think you meant diameter instead of width for 29 vs 27.5 vs 26 in wheel sizes; and you maybe meant alloy wheels are repairable and carbon not - you said the opposite.

It will be the 26er that will beat the 27er and 29er because when the 26er was chosen to get beefing up into the MTB all bicycles were the same quality the choice of 26er wasn't fashion.
For many decades the industry worked toward making everything lite and stronger. I know because I was there. Now they don't. 26" is the lightest and strongest. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've been riding 26" for over 25 years. I've test ridden bigger wheels. They aren't better. It's all marketing hype, to get you to spend more money. Thanks.
29ers are far superior to the 26. Zero marketing hype. 27.5 was marketing hype

Hi! You're right that the industry is trying to consistently make wheels lighter and stronger. Although, it's no secret that 27.5 and 29er wheels are faster and generally more efficient. 26" wheels are still great for some disciplines of riding! Also, wheels have become stronger, which means we can take advantage of running a bigger wheel size and use the benefits they provide. 👍
so the only axle is 12mm thic? pretty sure there are a million axle thicnesses
dh is 20, enduro is 15 ,and then 12 and so on
