In quantum mechanics, I've been told that a point on the x-axis can only have a definite value of probability density, and not probability itself because of uncertainty principle. Is it the same here?
A region of points can have a finite probability, a single point only has probability density. Like the probability of picking the number 0.2 out of all real numbers from 0 to 1 is vanishingly small/infinitesimal, as 0.2 is a single point and there are an infinity of real numbers. But the probability of picking something in the range 0.25 to 0.75 is 0.5. Similarly, if the electron must be found somewhere along the x-axis, the probability of finding it at a specific point is infinitesimal, while the probability of finding it in a region of points is non-zero I'm not sure what this has to do with the uncertainty principle.
@@shubham-sc3jn I was told, because we can't assign a fixed value to the physical quantity, whose propability we are plotting, as uncertainty principle states, so it can't have a definite probability. Just wondering if your full name's "Subham Tarkar"?
@@shubham-sc3jn thanks, very good explanation. I just wanted to ask, if you know how probability and probability density are related? If there's an equation that describes their relationship?
Random Delhite Think of probability as the sum of all the probability densities. Imagine you're rolling two dice. What's the probability you get 10 or higher. It's the chance of rolling 10, plus the chance of rolling 11, plus chance of rolling 12. The probability of some event is just the sum of the probabilities of every possible outcome that would satisfy that event.
This analogy doesn't work for continuous quantities. "How long until my bus arrives?" is one such question. The probability that it takes EXACTLY two minutes is zero. It will either be more or less than two minutes. A more useful question is "How likely is my bus to arrive within the next two minutes?"
