  • In this video, Matt Shanahan explains for us the structure of Chryslers/Fiats new PowerNet network. He demonstrates the connections needed to properly diagnose the communication networks that these vehicles are equipped with. A simulated failure was created to help illustrate a compromised network. Thanks for watching!

    I had a R56 Mini with turn signal fault. I identified a short on the K-bus, a single wire data bus that was prominent on early bmw vehicles. I run a similar routine to find the cause. I the Bus bar is buried beneath the drivers seat and was saturated in water, although this was not the cause. After pulling busses one at a time i discovered it was the rain sensor that had water ingress and shorted the live to the k bus line

      I wasn't aware of the star connectors. And as you state in your video these are pretty handy for diagnosis 😉

      I do have a question though. Is there a MOST bus on these for the infotainment?

    • @TrainedbyTechs
      @TrainedbyTechs  6 років тому +1

      Dylan Chrysler uses the powernet network. It's similar to MOST that a lot of manufacturers are using. Here is a link describing MOST. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOST_Bus

      Gotcha 😉 Thx for the MOST link. Although I'm aware of this bus, I see a lot of MOST50 in practice, it's always interesting to review it. I also read this article on FCA's Powernet.

    Matt, do you happen to know the oldest vehicle that has the power net system on it. Great video. I will have to look in to the SAE papers you mentioned

    • @matthewshanahanautomotivet4284
      @matthewshanahanautomotivet4284 6 років тому

      Chrysler introduced it in 2011, only on a few cars. A good CAN SAE paper is: "Locating Wire Short Fault for In-Vehicle Controller Area Network with Resistance Estimation Approach" The doi is 10.4271/2016-01-0065

      In 2011 Chrysler introduced powernet in the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and the Dodge Journey. It was right after that when they made it across-the-board on all vehicles I believe. Jeep etc all adopted the systems. As Matt said, the easiest way to identify if the vehicle is equipped with Powernet is by the appearance of the media center display.

    Great video. The only issue I have is that these new cars are the biggest pieces of crap because of these computer systems. I had a dart that was never right from the get go the screen would reset continuously. It had to do with voltage issue never was fixed it never through a code and wouldn’t act up at the dealership. I had videos of this issue. I still own a Jeep Cherokee 2014. Active grill shutter threw check engine light because it froze in an ice storm car wouldn’t pass inspection sad part is you have to pull the bumper off to get to the unit and it’s expensive vehicle has 67000 miles. Piss poor design on all these vehicles . You sill could have these creature comforts and have them as separate system. You can’t just change a radio any more and to boot they price of these vehicles is outrageous. Your video here is great but these cars really are garbage. Electrical issues cause huge problems with electrical voltage drops causing weird stuff to happen and sometimes it’s not reproducible so your stuck with a vehicle that does weird stuff.

      People always think something they don't understand is "garbage". I am constantly making changes to my Dodge Dart... and I have changed between 3 different radios because I know the process to program the BCM with the changes needed to recognize the new/different features.
      Active Grill Shutter is a good idea that didn't work out so well in practice... but to expect something to not freeze when it is out in the weather during an ice storm? But a problem with the AGS would NOT cause it to not pass emissions. Nevermind, it can be disabled in the system. And I've pulled the bumper cover off of my Dart... a few plastic pins and roughly 16 bolts. Not that hard tbh.
      My best friend is a mechanic, I am a computer engineer... both been in our fields for over 2 decades. He has taught me quite a bit about the mechanical part of working on cars. And I have kept him up to date with this stuff. Not that hard, just a different way of looking at it.

      Rob Campbell yes you would think so but in ny it will not pass. I currently have another issue on the can bus. These thing are garbage computers have done nothing but cost consumers more. I am not against technology but it has gone way beyond where it should be. Appliances are another example. I don’t know your age but I came from the days before the computer crap. I also atone point worked on and loved computers but what ruined it for me was every time I wanted to d something on them I had to deal with bugs and crashing which became a giant waste of time. A perfect example is Windows it’s still garbage and it’s been around since the mid 80s. You can’t look at a computer and tell it’s broken like you can with manual process of the way thing did work. You can’t predict how long a computer will last either. Just because you can program these things doesn’t make them better or more reliable. Just like one of my components is creating noice on the can network and keeping the check engine light on. There is no need to tie in a radio to this network or heated seats or door locks or windows they can all be controlled the way they were in the past. The only thing we do need a computer for is the ignition system and not everything else.

    • @johngibson3594
      @johngibson3594 4 роки тому

      Rob Campbell the other fact is you can’t swapped computers from car to car without taking the whole system they are all depending on each other. Swap of an engine in the old days was much easier. I could take a car with a six and put an eight in it by getting parts from a vehicle with an eight if it was an option. No can do today because all the computers and such the dart they built and used a modern hemi had so many issues it was funny. They did in the end Ge it to work but still had wired buggy issues.i believe it was grease monkey and a 68 dart

    • @johngibson3594
      @johngibson3594 4 роки тому

      Rob Campbell I do understand it and that’s why I know it’s garbage it doesn’t need to be this way to have these things work.

    Great information . Unfortunately , a large percentage of the " repair " shops out there don't have a clue on how to diagnose and fix these vehicles . There may be a large number of dealers as well . How would the public source competent , trained technicians ? Possibly on IATN or Diagnostic.net . Or contact Pico or ATS to see who owns their equipment . That is also no guarantee as to level of training . And there are too many shops willing to " take a stab at it " - with your wallet . It never turns out good and an ECM is then pronounced the root of all evil and replaced . Would there be a way to list trained techs and reach out to the public ? None of this is easy . However , the shops and techs that have invested in training and equipment should profit . It's too bad the industry gets a bad name because shops put themselves out there as experts , when in reality they are lube shops doing basic repairs and own a scan tool .
