To those who very harshly and quickly judge hijab as a symbol of oppression of women, I ask: When you see a nun in her habit, what do you think of that-is that a symbol of oppression or a dress that demands dignity and respect? The habit of a nun is a complete hijab. Why then the double standard? Is this not cultural imperialism? When a Catholic nun dresses in that way, she becomes dignified, but when a Muslim woman dresses in that way, she becomes the symbol of oppression?! In Islam, we want that dignity and respect for each and every Muslim woman, not only a few selected ones who have decided to serve the cause of their faith.

    • @paulinaramirez2469
      @paulinaramirez2469 9 років тому +5

I believe people tend to think of the hijab as oppression because muslim women are married or can get married and wearing it is part of being a muslim woman as opposed to nuns that do not get married and not all Catholic women are nuns.. One actually chooses to be a nun.
I know wearing a hijab is a choice as well, but this may be the reasoning behind the people who consider it to be oppressive. As if their husbands were the ones telling them to wear it.

A noon it's dressed like that because she is a noon she has to dress like that is part of his job and life but muslim womans dress like that even they are an average woman, all they had to dress like that, and that's not right. Don't say they do it because they want because most of them are brainwashed.

D Wadee3 I'm pretty sure you don't know "most" muslim women, so you can't say with all certainty that they are all brainwashed. Maybe if you studied a little bit more about their religion you'd understand why they do it, and why they think is the best thing to do.

Paulina Ramírez i live in paris and in my neigborhood is full of arabs women and i know a few of them because they are my neighbors and in my opinion, yes, they are brainwashed. i understand you want to be tolerant but it's a great mistake to be tolerant with intolerants that's why in france it's not leagal to wear the burka in the school.

I'm french and I want to say that in France hijab is also forbidden in school. I had to take off my hijab before going to my high school every morning and worth it at the end of the day next to the door of the school. Many teachers compels me to take of a bandana that I was wearing just to cover a little my hair. Even when we go out with the classroom at the cinema or the museum, we are forced to take off our hijabs or pretending that we are sick and we can't go .. This is unfair. France doesn't let us (girls who wearing hijab) to be considered as 'normal' in order to study, be well educated and by that having a place in the society !

I'm 15 and a Muslim girl, I don't wear the hijab, I plan on wearing it when I finish high school, no one is forcing me. I made my own decision. Not only is it for religion but it is beautiful and represents modesty and that's just how I feel like woman should be, modest. And I could care less of what anyone thinks, I could care less if anyone stares or even thinks I'm weird, this is how I wanna live my life .

All those people calling Muhammad a paedophile need to check themselves, 100 years ago girls were suitable to be married at 12. Heck, even In Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet' Juliet was 14 and was engaged to her fathers friend who I'm sure wouldn't be the same age as her. Mary was a teen while Joseph was an old man and I'm sure all the other religious/historical figures in the past were married to younger girls because that was the social norm. The life expectancy was lower and therefore people matured a lot faster. Does that still happen in Muslims now? No, why? Because life expectancy has increased so people hit puberty later, the social norm for age of marriage has changed and most importantly LEGAL REASONS. He can't be considered a peadophile when that was the norm 1400 years ago, even 100 years ago in places like the UK girls were underage according to modern laws. Aisha went on to being one of the most important and renowned scholars in Islam, she was WILLINGLY after he died, if

    • @Michael-wb8vl
      @Michael-wb8vl 8 років тому +37

+Kesha InMyCasa There is absolutely no scientific backing to say what you just said. As much as we know, puberty has remained constant throughout human evolution. In fact, puberty is coming sooner than before.

    • @nasir6r996
      @nasir6r996 8 років тому +57

+Kesha InMyCasa It's kind of funny, because even what was considered 'adult' back then was different. if you were a boy, the moment you got pubic hair you were considered a man- you went to work. If you were a girl and you got your period, you were considered a woman, and thus eligible for marriage. Alot of people were getting married at 13 and 14 years of age back then.
As for when puberty hits, there is some correlation that suggests that people in hotter environments hit it earlier than colder environments. However, this is only correlation, so it can't be relied upon.
What alot of people who throw accusations of pedophila towards Muhammad also fail to realize, or willingly leave out, is the age of his other wives who were all hovering around 30. His first wife, it is also worth mentioning, was 15-20 years his senior. A person who is a pedophile would, conceivably, surround themself with young children for the purposes of sexual fulfillment.
It is also reported by Aisha herself that he never touched her or consummated with her until after she had her period.

    • @anityyu

I strongly support the women's right to wear burkah and hijab, but Niqaab (full-face covering) just creeps me out, and is an unnecessary security threat to innocent people. The Wedding house I was staying at was robbed by a "lady" wearing a niqaab, who we all assumed was our cousin who does niqaab too. Turns out, that cousin never even came to the house. How scary is that? Niqaabis could be any criminal - and it is seriously a threat.

The purpose of Hijab is to promote Modesty. With the Hijab, women are not judged based on their outer physical looks, they are judged on their internal character because it is whats on the inside that counts. And yes, men have a Hijab too, it is the Hijab of the eyes. They are to control their eyes and what they look at.

      Like ***** said below me
''burka is traditional not islamic! islam says nothing about covering the face, arab women do it out of tradition most likely due to the effect of heat on thier skin (before sun lotions and creams were invented)
And to keep sand out of ears and to cover the eyes in a sandstorm.
Same goes to pork, It spoils quickly. More quickly then any other meat with that heat. Thats why it was banned even before your religion.
Now you have a fridge so its no longer necessary. But someone managed to make a religion out of it.

      Mohamed Ghita
Thats why we cook it. It kills all bad bacteria.
It dates back from a time when we did not know what bacteria were.
there was a time when we did eat raw or meat that was not proper cooked and had no fridge. Thats why it was banned. Now we do know how to treat meat, so now we can eat it.

I think people should wear what they want, but not be forced too. It should be a personal decision. I think if your going to get your license or work for security your face should be shown but out in normal public you should wear what you wish too.

Nobody forces anyone to wear the burka. In fact, in Islam it is strongly discouraged to take up wearing the burka unless you can be 100% committed to it from then on out. What people don't understand is that it is OUR choice.

in some countries clothing is force. Some countries are strict, And sometimes men force their wives to wear it. I'm against that. But if it is YOUR choice then go for it. People should wear what they wish to. BUT I do agree that someone's face should be shone if they are going in for a drivers license etc. I have already been told the hijab and burka those or personal choices and they should be. I'll always be against people being forced to wear certain things. I'm also against bans that say you can't wear a burka in public. It should always be someone's choice and Never force or banned.

I have some indian friends who are basically from religous hindu families, but they are non-theists and their families are okay with it. Surprisingly in islam if you are a non-believer it is taken very seriously.

I am a Muslim. I chose to wear hijab when I was 17, now I'm an undergraduate and turning 20. My sisters don't wear hijab, but I believe that they will when they are ready. We went to some European countries for vacation, including the UK, the Netherlands, Italy and France since I started wearing hijab. And I didn't find it a problem. I didn't even know it was banned to wear hijab in France at all. At first, I didn't see any Muslim women there, or maybe I didn't recognised them because they are not wearing hijab. But then they were some people who said Salam to me when I passed by. I was so surprised. because even in my country, rarely anyone would greet you on the street with Salam even though we are all Muslims. But when there, in France, Muslim brothers and sisters, who obviously don't know who I am or where I come from, greeted me with Salam, I was so surprised because I didn't know they were Muslims too. Then I realised that I may not recognised them as Muslims, but they recognised me because of my hijab. I felt so touched. I love my my hijab. The hijab is a part of my identity as a Muslim. How I wish and hope the hijab will no longer be illegal in any country in the world. I wish we never live in the world where we fear each other. Because we never mean any harm.

LoveSpaghettiSmile Hey nice to meet you, I have to comment on what you are saying because you seem misguided, Hijab is not forbidden in France, only the burqa is (full cover of your face). It is the same in Belgium where I am from, these laws have been passed on the basis that you must be recognisable when in public. I don't believe that this offends muslim people because, and correct me if I'm wrong, islam doesn't promote burqas (fully covering women). So you're welcome to wear hijabs here as long as you like!

There are places where you can pray and everything but when you're in public your religion is not supposed to exist. Religion is supposed to be for private life. But the biggest contradiction is that every holiday is based on the christian heritage, we get a break for christmas with tons of christmasy things on TV. We get easter breaks and a lot of ther things like that. People are trying to get things to change but the government is hard-headed.

And for the record do you research muslim in Burma are getting killed every day a lot of muslim people die in Palestine. Persecutions aren't proper to one religion or one nation in particular it is never excusable and you should never consider a situation to be less problematic because there's worst happening somewhere else. I mean come on, you seem intelligent, you know things only get worst if everyone sits back and shuts up when an injustice in happening. And for a country that has "liberty" in its official moto, it sure is a contradiction.

France is secular, so la Laïcité isn't just for muslims, but all religious and non-religious individuals. So if you're Catholic you can't wear a cross etc. I think France's aim was to make everyone 'equal' but in reality, taking away people's differences can do much more harm than good. I think the interviewer could've done more research and explained this to his interviewees instead of saying "You know, France banned it." without actually explaining why. The French guy even said, which you missed out in the subtitles, "it's against la Laïque republic in France"

  • @Michael-wb8vl

The situation with France and banning the burka is extremely different than our case. They recently took in a lot of Syrian migrants. And since they have a direct land connection between Syria and France, people from all over the middle east can just walk up to France and apply for refugee status. And that means everyone, people from ISIS, Al Qaeda, terrorists everywhere. So when you have thousands to hundreds of thousands of people wearing full body burqas.
Then what happens is that everyone, including men (muslim or not) could wear a full body burqa to blend in with the crowd and escape arrest. That, and the muslim population in France is concentrated to the larger cities. Meaning there's more Muslims in a smaller area. Also the Muslims that NYC does have don't wear full body burqas. They wear hijabs. These two situations are completely different.

When I was in year nine, a girl who was a couple years older than me wore a hijab every day. She didn't used to, but the rumor was that she went to Morocco, and came back truly refreshed in tradition. She used it to hold her smartphone. I want one.

France wants to have a """laïc""" republic. Nobody has to show any religious sign in public places : it goes with hijab, niqab, kippa, crucifix, etc. Well, the law isn't meant to be a prohibition for muslims especially but whatever. Still, I think it's kinda stupid since republic of France, as a secular state. is supposed to guarantee all sorts of liberties, including freedom of worship. So what's their point ?

    Karim, that is false
France did not ban hijab in public institutions.
A lot of Algerians and North African Muslims live there and that includes a lot of my cousins
In fact my mother is French and her parents are too and they lived in Algeria all their lives and they reverted to Islam when they were really young.
However, wearing a burqa or a niqab is banned in France but wearing just a hijab is only illegal in schools.
Like my cousin has to wait till she leaves school so she could wear it.

I'm a big fan of history and I've always noticed how France always was a radical form of democracy ever since the revolution apart from Napoleon's rule. I mean, there may not be any anti-muslim hate involved with the hijab ban, but they feel that expression of one's race, ethnicity or religion is against equality (look at the crazy moves they made in the colonies to "civilize" the natives who lived there by making them wear French clothes and go to French schools and all) whereas, imo, equality should be done by the govt in treating it's citizens no matter who they are. The French idea of equality is a tad self-centered imo. :/

Mohammed Zaid i'm french, i've been to school, and to answer your question mohammed the hijab is banned in schools just like wearing a tiny christian cross or a kippah is banned !
it's simple : in france in public we're not able to show our beliefs because we think it divide us more than something else
it's not just about the muslims

in some Arab countries (like KSA), however, it's more traditional than religious. but, in other countries like Egypt, it's thankfully becoming more religiously affectionate than just a strict tradition.

France needs to educate themselves, that dude who said, 'he doesn't understand why we wear them 'clothes'''; should at least try to put the effort in to understand, because there are millions of different cultures out there, and some cultures/religions cover themselves, not only Muslims.
By the way, why is a niqab threatening? What if, I just do not wish to show my face to the world and decide to wear a bandanna, would that be threatening, or it's too cold so I cover my face?
    Seriously, what is the difference?

    • @lambert1488

The French Republic is based on a principle called "laicité". Laïcité goes back to the laws passed in 1905 that enshrined the principle of separation of church and state, and ended, at least in principle, the support of the state for what up to that time were officially supported religions: Roman Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans and Jews. The concept of laïcité can be defined as the neutrality of the state towards religious beliefs, and the complete isolation of religious and public spheres. So, in all places covered by the state (schools, administrative buildings, city halls), all religious symbols (even the christian cross) are banned. Muslim women are allowed to wear hijab in the street, also, face covering objects such as the niqab are prohibited to easily identify the person.

I'm a french muslim woman and I actually wear a hijab. I saw your video with tears in my eyes.....I'm so ashamed of my country for having as sentence "Liberty, Equality and Brotherhood" and not being able to see hijab as a way for muslim women to be free ! I mean, they are actually trying those last month to make us disappear by making laws against us but isn't freedom the right to choose ? Well some women don't want to wear it and it's ok, but I'm not allowed to chose to wear it ?
    Freedom yeah......When they want !

I once asked a women on the street in summer, full covered besides the face, if it isnt incredible hot in there, and if the sweating isnt uncomfortable.
the woman answered that it isnt hot in there, and that sweating is normal. moreover it is "cooler" if you wrap yourself up....
yeah thats why in summer arab guys walk around in t-shirt and bermudas.
people lie to themselves, so they dont have to think about their misery.

i honestly understand their fear, i' muslim and arabian and i hate burka(not hijab). Because in my country it was banned until this ISIS thing came and now i see them everywhere it really creeps me out even my baby cousin starts crying when he see them wearing like batman. Also the majority of ISIS members in my country wear that so suspecting them is totally normal. And since we are having security issues right now, i hope they understand when someone ask them to take it off i also hope they could just wear hijab but not burka, it's really way better.Cause the majority who wear burka decided to move from hijab to burka or from nothing to burka at this hard time like why? Hijab is beautiful on women. Start with hijab.
I know i might seem ignorant but i think religion is half what you are wearing and half ur behaviour. Covering your body like that is not an obligation. I pray i fast and i'm also planning to wear hijab, i do charity work and i study and teach others about islam, even my fiancé converted and what are these burka girls doing to satisfy god?(at least the one that lives here) praying and covering yourself is not enough to win's god's bless. you have to be an active person that's what god created you for.
