I come from karting, and though I’m new to mountain biking, some concepts you explain in your videos ring a bell. On the other hand, in karts we basically drive in two dimensions. Here there are three to factor in, which adds a lot of fun and complexity. Thanks for your videos!
I happened on an impromptu front brake learning session. I rode up my usual hill… and found out my back brake was glassed after a previous day of ridiculous brake intensive riding. Had to ride the entire thing on my front brake only. A learning experience for sure😂
Just know that while looking steezy, it'll wreck every trail you're doing it on. So if you're not digging/maintaining trails yourself, maybe don't. ;) Skandinavian flick before a corner, or for loosing speed in the steep. Here's a brief introduction: ua-cam.com/video/NEXu-WOwB_M/v-deo.html
@@darnokregrer3575 nope I will do it on steep spots I know. I know how hard to maintain trails and it’s impossible to do it in trails since there is no long and loose steep sections
I have watched both seasons covering all episodes with out having a bike😌😅. You are sharing priceless information and i look forward to practice when I get my first bike. Thanks 🙏 Ben😍 @pinkbike
Brilliant. Nearly all of my riding buddies believe that locking up the back brake and skidding is a controlled and efficient way of descending. The same guys are scared shitless of the front brake. I’m gonna share this to them all. Cheers Ben
More than likely this series has already been recorded but I would like to see how to add style to my riding! Like wheeling between rollers or wheeling while downhill riding. Also how to endo turn, drift/barp/shrap/whatever you call it Love the serie 🤘
Thank you so much for this video. I did a full superman OTB while on a trail I had no business being on (I'm very new to mtb), going too fast and panic squeeze the breaks. Hearing, "ya just need to practice" but no guidance on how to practice was frustrating. This is super helpful.
OTB's happen from grabbing brakes, this is what happens instinctively when you're scared. It's quite normal and a habit that is very quickly broken with braking practise (Ben's talk on Modulation). You can squeeze (not grab) the brakes VERY hard, and if your body is in the right position you'll slow down fast without going OTB.
I think one key thing that wasn't on the script is: pump the ground while heavy braking in the brake zone. It increases grip, but you have to time the brake with the pump.
Bikes were invented by Karl von Drais a German guy and as here in Germany front is left and rear is right that's the right way. Front right rear left is like using miles to describe distance.
You should talk more about using the brakes independently of each other. Entering the braking zone I actually apply my front brake fractionally before my rear brake, and then depending on the exit, I smoothly release each brake separately as the respective wheel gets to the apex. You could call it trail braking but I like to think of it as... "release each brake sequentially to give the tire the grip necessary to hold the turn". 1. Enter braking zone, Front brake comes on VERY strong first, then the rear modulating to maintain the rear from sliding 2. As you get to the apex and decide it's time to come off the brakes, you will begin to lean the bike 3. As you lean the bike the front tire will require you to release the front brake to "give" more of the total available traction to turning and less to braking 4. Completely off the front brake now as it has passed the corner of the apex, you begin to let off the rear, maintaining grip and juuuuust barely dragging the rear depending on if you want to rotate the rear tire or not through the corner 5. Off the rear brake now you are though the corner!
Damnit that was pure fkn gold right there! I was looking for ways to improve my braking and this was what i needed to hear. Pinkbike needs to get Ben a huge increase in pay. His value is unmatched
The problem is over speeding in tricky sections. This usually ends in Friday fails video = Panic or more like a FFFFF...k + brakes + try to save with a controlled crash, skid or what ever comes to you brain in that moment.🤯
1:58 ROFLMAO so true I live in Canada and I rode motocross before I ever got on a pedalbike, man I did a endo first time pulling breaks I was thinking its just like a motorbike right side front left being no clutch on pedal bike should be rear oh boy was I mistaken.
How to brake. Pull levers. Why brake? To slow down. When to brake? Preferably before you crash. Too early and you're a noob. Too late and you're a sender. Just right and you have a seat with the 3 bears, just sippin' on some porridge.
Love these videos , and ' HA' it IS the correct way ! Gravel rash to the face while trying to impress a girl in Salou when I was 14 is testament to this fact.
Ben is it true that the reason why the back brake is on the left because of motorcycles? If that's the case let me remind everyone that it's actually the way they are on scooters, motorcycles have the rear brake foot pedal. Stop riding a scooter.
I was just wondering why is it at other countries and places tend to put their brakes on the opposite sides that we do here in the US I'm also a motorcycle rider so I agree that when you're comparing it to a motorcycle it makes more sense to have the brakes in the same side but is there any reason other than that I also hear a lot of writers from the UK say that it just makes sense or that it's the right way I was just wondering the reasoning to me it seems for the consistency between other types of vehicles and bikes

Ben would be a good guy to teach that because he appears to have both the steeze and the sauce.

great and informative video on braking, made greater by these bits: 1:11, 2:00, 2:04, 11:09
I rode for many years. Since childhood. The only way to get those specific traits and feelings is to ride, alot!
i love this series so much
It's funny that left front and right rear is the most correct and accurate way...😅✌️
Love your videos keep up the great material
You have good energy 👍
Best yet!
Nice video and educational too, thank you.
P.S.
Whole Europe uses left brake for front wheel and right one for rear...😊
This video is great! Master Ben's presentation is awsome :)
Ben Rocks!!
What is the app to compare videos? Great video btw
Your brakes are the wrong way :) lol , Amazing video!
Personally, I removed the front brake altogether and just run a 203mm Shimano Saint on the rear... way more fun.
Right rear easy to remember, here in the USA, enjoyed the video though.

Just adding a little “sauce” regarding front brake on left or right! LOL 😂
These "How to.." are a real great.. =)
2:00 it IS the correct way as it's the same way it's on motorcycles 💀
Brakes I didn’t recall any brakes on my bike. I better go check hold on. Hey yeah, there are some things on the wheels they might work not sure.
Damnit that was pure fkn gold right there! I was looking for ways to improve my braking and this was what i needed to hear. Pinkbike needs to get Ben a huge increase in pay. His value is unmatched
If I put the front brake on the right hand, then does the rear brake go on the right foot?
This Guy needs an Oscar!

I am smashing that comment section fo you!
but what about using brake squat to increase rear wheel grip and actually go faster?

spicy comment about how your levers are on the wrong side
braking the front wheel using the right hand, I couldn’t expect anything diffent from people who drives in the left side of the road. 😂😂😂

I did 70kph on a dh road here on our local roads, no breaking sure helps
Front brakes packing down the front suspension throwing you forward, packing down the suspension more over bumps is the worst.
I just tore my rotator cuff how can I ride DH one handed?
Rear brake right side of handle bars is correct not the rear brake on the left side of the bars seems like instant death

How could I have forgotten the organic ABS replica :o
but our bike manufacturer setup the brakes reverse, left for front & right for rear brake🤔
How do you not use brakes on steep turns?? I can be off the brakes in flattish turns, but anything steep, the bike picks up so much speed 😕
which santa cruz is that?
Hardly even ride anymore just watch for Cathro content
switching between the NA way or brakes and motorcycles is messing up my muscle memory big time :(
Ben cathro For prime minister
Yeah.. the "right way" :D
''the correct way'' LOL

back brake on the right because u usually pull the back brake harder and more often and most people have stronger right hands.
You shouldn't have to hold the brakes hard at all
