  • As a vocal coach and singer-songwriter from Montreal, I love exploring new music, and today, I’m diving into Killswitch Engage for the first time. Their latest song is packed with energy, powerful vocals, and an unexpected contrast between heaviness and uplifting lyrics.
✨Want one-on-one private lessons? Head over to kardavoxacademy.com!✨
In this video, I break down the lead singer’s belting technique, discuss how he integrates distortion into his voice, and analyze the dynamic interplay between vocals and instrumentation. I also share some quick tips on belting for those looking to develop their own vocal power.
What You'll Learn in This Video:
Belting Technique - How to safely extend your chest voice for a powerful, controlled belt.
Vertical Mouth Positioning - Why keeping an open, vertical mouth shape improves high notes.
Chest vs. Head Voice - Understanding how to transition between registers.
Distortion & Rasp - How the Jesse adds grit to his voice while keeping a clean, supported belt.
Singing with Energy - Why stage presence and adrenaline can impact vocal delivery.
Harmonizing in a Band - How the second vocalist complements the lead singer’s tone.
Vocal Health & Range Expansion - Tips to train your voice without strain.
If you’re a vocalist wanting to expand your range or refine your technique, I’d love to work with you-just click the link below to book a lesson.
Let me know in the comments if there’s another Killswitch Engage song I should check out next!

13:40 Killswitch has a lot of songs based around positivity, moreso than a lot of heavy bands. Reject Yourself, This Fire, Eye of the Storm, Take This Oath, In Due Time, The Signal Fire, I Believe are all about either "being a good person" or "there is hope for people without it."

Jesse’s voice has been aging really well. He’s getting better as gets older.
Howard may be objectively better, but Jesse is also a treasure for this band.

@@testingmyaudioaddiction3452 I LOVE operatic tones. Listening to a lot of classical music and symphonic metal.
I Don't find anything about his tone to be operatic tho. I really don't like how constricted he sounds. Jesse also has some constriction to his cleans but it sounds a tad more "open" to me if you get what I mean?

@testingmyaudioaddiction3452 howard almost ruined the band between not taking care of his diabetes and his uninspired last album. The band chose to let him go, why can't the fans?

Would absolutely LOVE for you to do a review/reaction of TesseracT - "Legion". Daniel Tompkins (lead singer) is also a vocal coach, and is wonderful. Really experimental with his voice in different projects, but he really puts his voice on display on songs like "Legion".

You're gonna love Killswitch. I definitely suggest songs like Strength of the Mind, Hate by Design, In Due Time, The End of Heartache, My Curse, My Last Serenade, The Signal Fire and I am Broken Too. As for those saying that Howard's vocals are better than Jesse's, I love that for u lmao but y'all can shush cause Jesse being the original vocalist has proved himself with his improved range time and time again since returning to the band back in 2012.

Let me introduce you Missioned Souls, a family band from the Philippines 4 siblings 3 sisters Naces 16 pronounce (faces) on bass, Stacey 12 on vocals, Neisha (knee sha) 14 on lead guitar and Ice 11 on drums. These kids are phenomenal! All bass trained but have specific talents of their choice of instrument. Check out the cover of Skunk Anansie “Because of You, the vocals blew me away🎉 Thanks.
