  • Within the Ring of Fire is a dark fantasy roleplaying game from RAW Immersive Games over at ‪@woodwwad‬
    #rpg #dnd #ttrpg
    This game is one of the weirdest and most compelling RPGs we have ever played and helped crystalize our views of what RPGs can be. This is a game that is primarily focused on immersion through roleplay, and though flawed in many respects, is deeply compelling.
    We cover the good, the bad, and the utterly incomprehensible aspects of this great, great game.

    I did a lot of read of mythology before writing this game - mostly to my 2-3 year old son.

    I cannot stress enough how well 77 Thrones is written. Way to put those degrees in creative writing AND theology into practice! For me, it's right up there with "Dune" as an amazing treatise on religion, society, piety, and power structure. Also, boys think of Elsam as the best big titty goth girlfriend, but men know it's Kretara.

    Within the Ring of Fire is like throwing rocks at cars with your dad. It's probably not the "best" expenditure of your time, but it certainly feels that way.

    I will forever treasure our deplorable Infracti adventure. "Love on Hell's Roof" started off with three despicable albino cavemen publicly humiliating their families, and it only got wilder from there. Profane necromancy, plate armour made from people, birthing a brand new species from potatoes magically planted inside people... what a ride, man.

    Seriously this game gave me the missing piece that was woefully absent in my gaming groups. In my experience dnd was little more than rolling dice and min maxing characters and I was left wondering where the mystique was. I discovered it in you guys; Ander, Onion kid, Gogira, Lou and everyone that uploaded these videos on wtrof.
    Even if it was just one dirty power gamer that received the blessing upon is nugget, these videos and memories were desperatley needed and influenced me powerfully and the spell you all wove had immense potential far surpassing the generic trash critical role produces. Timing is everything and it would please me greatly to see new content. I would eagerly open my wallet and my revelry and spread the fire to my community so that perhaps a blaze can once again be rekindled in the hearts and minds of roleplay.

    Holy shit. I remember watching some of Ander's videos about this back in the day after randomly discovering his channel via YT voodoo. I don't remember much beyond his evocative descriptions and over-the-top enthusiasm, but those have really stuck with me. Dude was clearly incredibly passionate about the world he was building and I got a lot of really useful ideas for how to play/run a much more cinematic-feeling game.
    I'll have to check out WtRoF. I suspect it may be a bit much for most of my current group but it sounds _right_ up my alley.

    It definitely seems like a wonderful setting that should be tied to an existing system. I think he'd do really well in the OSR if he started releasing books in that community.

    Damn, this sounds like a real trip. If I have some money left over after the holidays I might take the plunge. Any tips for how to set target numbers for the 2d8 exploding rolls?

    • @blacklodgegames
      @blacklodgegames  9 місяців тому

      Honestly I was winging it a lot but 12-15 seems to be a decent difficulty. 9 is the peak of the probability curve for 2d8 and you will have attribute and skill modifiers added to it. Exploding dice often exceed that and make things more cinematic.

    • @spiralvex2686
      @spiralvex2686 9 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the quick reply! That sort of lines up with what I was thinking, the 12-16 range seemed like a good range when accoubting for character skills and bonuses. I'm trying to sell my wife on some of the lore I've seen here and there. Immersive RPGs are our bag but our current lineup of newer dnd initiated players has sort of burned her out a bit. Glad I remembered the Black Lodge after seeing a vid earlier in the year, definitely looking forward to more.

    If I could take this setting and play it with another system that would be great. It feels like dungeon crawl classics would be a perfect switch.

    • @blacklodgegames
      @blacklodgegames  10 місяців тому +1

      The system has some quirks and missing pieces but it is honestly my favorite core mechanic in a fantasy game. 2d8 exploding makes things very cinematic.

    Sure, on my radar for things to check out.
    Something to consider: you've done a lot of telling here. You can show a lot more. Instead of describe awesome stuff, read excerpts from the book. Make some characters. Give examples of situations you'd put in a saga or one-shot. Use some media supporting what you're saying. Even take some clips out of the live action videos you've done.
