  • Magnax (www.magnax.com) recently finished the first production prototype of the axial flux direct-drive machine (permanent magnet) which will be used in the new generation of wind turbines and electric machinery. Here the machine is tested on the Lemcko Testbench.
To give you an idea; for the same power and torque, a 100kW axial flux machine weighs only 850 kg while a traditional direct-drive machine weighs about 4000 kg.
Besides the weight advantage, the axial flux technology brings other advantages such as a much more compact size, high efficiency (up to 98% for larger sizes), very high reliability, easy to scale while the production cost stays low.

    Impresionant !
Asteptam de mult acest lucru sa sa intample , mai ales in industria auto .
4 propulsoare montate direct pe roata si in loc de 500 KG motor cu ardere interna + minim 40 litri combustibil punem acumulator
    Felicitari si succes !

Just for your information. The induction motor here replaces the wind turbine blades which usually drive the generator in a wind turbine setup. Here we simulate this by using a traditional motor/gearbox. Of course, the machine also works vice versa as an electric motor.

If that is around 2000 mm diameter , what would the pole count need to be if it was around 6.5 meters diameter , spinning at 20 - 25 RPM and intended to produce 50 Hz Grid Feed 3 phase output from wind or water turbine ?

I built a device once that had several disks all larger than the next. I think I had 10 in all. The smallest 4 inches and the largest 4 feet in diameter. Each disk had aluminum plates on the outer edge side facing the next larger disk. Each disk had magnets on the side facing the smaller disk place in the diameter of the next smaller disk. All except 2 of the disks were on a shaft with bearings that would turn independently of each other except for the largest disk was attached to the shaft. The very smallest disk was attached to a 9 volt motor about the diameter of a quarter. I would turn on the motor and it would spin. This would start the bigger second disk spinning and the second d would start the bigger third and so on. I was able to spin the 4 foot disk at about 135 rpm in the end. You could slow the largest disk with a load and have very little affect on the smaller disks. I have torn it apart and the rennets are still in my basement. I would love to see this built to high tolerance specs. Maybe even use copper plates or coils instead of aluminum plates.
Mine was cut out on a table saw from 3/4 project board and some parts made on my cnc router to hold bearings and such.

We would like to buy 6 of the motors, 10kW, for to drive agitators at 54rpm, wothout gear reduction. This is one are of application where these motors would be extremely beneficial.
They would remove the mechanical gear reduction required for tank agitation speeds.

For 500 kw work with 2 rings of 3 meters approximately? and have the motor to move those rings, and would it be like a ring? and how many RPM and volts would the engine work?
working 24/7 the generator and the engine how long is the life

    • @Magnax
      @Magnax  5 років тому +2

Exactly: 2x 3m or 3x 2,5m at 25 rpm for 500kW. The stators are connected to each other (and the stator frame of the wind turbine) and the rotors are connected to each other. In case of a wind turbine, the heavy duty forces from the wind turbine blades are usually absorbed via a separate wind turbine bearing (like a SKF nautilus bearing). The integrated bearing in the axial flux generator is only meant to preserve the airgap and is as such "overdimensioned" and not taking heavy duty forces. As a result, the only component subject to wear is the integrated bearing but since it's overdimensioned it will have a very long lifetime. (nevertheless, there is an integrated lubricant reservoir which can be filled every x years) Full load voltage is 230/400V. Cheers, Daan

so, what is the difference btw Magnax motor and YASA motor?

    • @Magnax
      @Magnax  6 років тому +1

      Hi Chuang,
      3 differences.
      1. We use grain oriented electrical steel cores which are much more effective in terms of flux density. (Yasa uses SMC cores (soft magnetic).
      2. Yasa cools the cores by pumping oil through the cores. This generates turbulences, air bubbles and a less robust fixation of the cores. The Magnax concept uses a patented cooling concept with Alu components surrounding the cores and extract the heat very effectively. Additionally; no empty space inside the motors which is also very good for vibration resistance.
These 2 reasons result in 2x power density vs. Yasa design.
      3. The Magnax concept for fixation of the cores delivers very high manufacturability, which is a key element for our OEM customers.

What is the difference between emrax vs magnax?
Lowest power of magnax motor ?
      185mm?
      If yes
Then what is the price and what motor controller should be useful for 185mm?
Does motor controller provide idle rpm to motor?
      Last question is that
185mm motor can works as generator ?

Hello. You have the technical ability to make an electric motor 700 kW, working moment of impulse 1000 N/kg,
    Revolutions 10 - 100 revolutions / minute.
    Привет.
У вас есть техническая возможность сделать электрический мотор 700 kW, рабочий момент импульса 1000 N/kg.
    Обороты 10 - 100 оборотов/минута.

I saw your website White Paper. Great improvement over the incredibly stupid, wasteful, standard commercial motor/generators. 98%, are you sure you have taken into account back EMF under load? ... Take a look at non-mainstream; the Bedini/Newman "window" motor/generator arrangement.

Lol. :-) I can assure you that it's not CGI. It's a real prototype. Feel free to come and check it out live in Belgium.

It looks like CGI because the machine is so clean :)
