Snowcone Guy Drones aren’t fast enough and would be difficult to coordinate. Remember that this is not the only aircraft in the airspace over the track. The first race I ever attended in person (Belgium, 2008) I was totally amazed by the Heli-Cam pilot, he was amazing and flew so close to the ground filming the cars. It was an amazing sight. But not as amazing as the race that year!
That has always fascinated me. Not only is the pilots control incredible they also have to do it in such a way that the wash from the heli doesn't effect the aero of the cars they are filming. Really cool stuff.

There are thousands unsung heroes involved in the ciruis that is the F1 paddock moving around the world each season, who normally go without a thought by most, nice work F1 for showing these guys 👍
So question - with drones taking over a lot of aerial work, could this quality of filming be done by the current drones available? Do they have the endurance, speed, controllability and connectivity to the ground team necessary for F1 to achieve comparable footage?
Great to see. I wish for an overhead shot at or just after the start. The standard head-on shot gives no perspective on the relative starts of all the cars. “Lights out and here we go..Lewis gets a great start..”. yeah sure, but impossible to tell from that head on shot.
People understimate so much how hard it is to get the shots down for a movie or an important program like this, thanks Formula 1 for showing a piece of our work :)
Its really a great job to be doing seeing those mesmerising scenes and making us see the race in bird eye perspective ... F1 would have been never been the same without those heli shots
I wonder how the heli operates back when Sepang was still in the calendar, given that the track was right beside Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Surely it is a pain from an air traffic point of view.
This is a late reply, but they put up TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions) around major events. They are usually a radius in nautical miles and capped at a certain altitude. They are during a certain time range, as well. ATC is well-aware of these and coordination goes into the planning. For example for the Indy 500 this weekend, there is a 7nm TFR from the surface to 10,000' from 0900-1800. Hope this helps! (I'm a former ATC and currently a military pilot).

how about the fuel?
Kermisreporter their engineers should work out how much fuel the helicopter will consume during the race. Landing to refuel is against the rules now.
the race is about 2 hrs long, not a big deal for a heli
I think mid race refueling is banned now, plus the whole race is just two hours long, not hard for heli at all.
