This video walks you through the proper installation of straw wattles for erosion control using the standard trench method (CALTRANS Type 1). There is additional safety information for working in post-fire areas. For MOST post-fire landscapes, natural regeneration and no disturbance is the best option.

Why not put small swales in instead and then lightly mulch the trough? Seems like a little more effort but much more water retention.
