Steel Battalion (2002) Gameplay and Controller

- This is a quick video montage of Capcom's Steel Battalion (2002) showing simultaneous gamplay footage and video of the player using the game's unique controller. The controller features three pedals (not visible in the video), two control sticks and over 40 buttons. The video shows the second version of the controller distinguished by blue buttons (the original version featured green buttons).
The video shows gameplay for two levels, menus and loadings screens. Thanks goes to Caleb G. who volunteered to play through some levels for the purposes of documenting this unique game and controller.

Legendary for its time. Yeah, the price tag was a bit much (around $200, if I'm remembering it properly), but goddamn did it make for an immersive experience. Once you got accustomed to that big damn controller, playing the game made you feel like a badass.
The ammount of innovation in that game was on par with Descent. (another game that was much different from anything that came before it)
Needs a VR update, it looks great.
would love to see a re-boot of this in HD! how sick would that be!
Really cool mech sim. Wish there was something like this with Gundam.

Bought this game on day one ; still playing it . Way ahead of it's time ( 360 would've been perfect ) . Unfortunately , the online play was horrible , the lag was awful . In the game , during the 1st run through , if you died , all your memory was deleted & you had to start over at the 1st mission ( 21 missions ) on single player . Tough , but still fun . Online , if you lagged out , it was the same as KIA & you lost everything , extremely frustrating . Still , worth looking for if you're hardcore gaming !
this game needs to be remade in hd
also re-release the control set and include occulus rift support
too bad this was before xbox live. I bet that would have sold soooooo many more units. They should bring it back and redo the controller for the ONE.

I was now watching neon genesis evangelion, loaded with fucking lots of beer and I remember this game but not the name of it. I put this to google "mech game with own controller". now I'm here. aaaah. so this is what it looked like. awesome. and the controller, wow

Makes you feel like a fucking BADASS, so many buttons, TRUE precision, not as much diversity in the characters, missions are around the same length, but it's still AWESOME...new version, you fucked it up by using a shitty piece of technology(seriously, I can't believe I'm saying this, but it would work better on the WII)...
