Perfect explanation of why roundabouts are confusing. By the time you've read and deciphered all the directions in the sign, you're past it and halfway around the roundabout having missed your exit.
Thanks for the concise and informative explanation. I've only been driving for 50 years and it never even impinged on my consciousness that every roundabout sign is incomplete! When the sat-nav tells you to take the third exit, say, I was never sure whether to count the entrances as well, so always anxiously looking out for a sign with the name of the place I'm heading for. However, I think I've cracked that now. Thanks!
The fact sat nav says third EXIT is the give away. The third available exit. Otherwise it'd say the "third junction" or "third entrance and exit". Saying "take the x exit" is standard language in driving tests. Maybe wasn't so much 50yrs ago, perhaps? I took my test just over 20yrs ago and it was in use back then.
As someone coming from a country where we would never use such a sign to describe a roundabout, I would falsely and dangerously assume, that there would be no traffic coming from my right...
Another signage mystery to many is the small yellow squares with various shapes in them (mostly on motorway and A road signage). These are used to indicate alternative routes on the motorway system when a diversion needs to be put in place. I'm afraid running a signage and graphics business means I've become a bit of a nerd when it comes to signage (and fonts too!!).

One thing I find scary is that a lot of people do not know about the zig-zag lines at zebra crossings. Maybe a topic for the next very well explained video, please.. Thanks.
I am completely bewildered as to why people nower days think its OK to park on zigzags, over the past 10/15 years driving has got atrocious in this country. When I was new to driving I was scared s***less to even think of parking on zigzags, it was a no no, and mini cab drivers don't care where the park today.
@@shannalog frankly I'm shocked by the sheer number of cars in the UK. I visit rarely particularly since COVID, but it seems that the UK is on the verge of a permanent gridlock. It's a real concern when this is the new normal everywhere. I understand therefore why people overlook the law in order to gain a precious place to park, wrong as it is.
@@gunner678 Covid did give me the greatest driving experience of my life though ... Back when the lockdown first started, they had just finished the 3rd lane on the A14 near Cambridge ... and there was hardly anybody on the whole road, except me - with 3 lanes all to myself, ALL of the speed cameras switched off or removed - and a beautiful sunset ... the pedal went down, I loved the A14 more than any other road in the world in that moment! :) Honestly, it was better than any of those completely unrealistic car adverts we keep seeing!
I have been driving in the UK for 30 years and still learned a lot here. I've always found signage for the bigger roundabouts complex and confusing, so I'm generally just following the car in front! (traffic lights allowing). Plus I'm lucky that I don't have to use big roundabouts often. I've never even noticed that gap in the circle before. Your explanations might make things easier for me in future!
Very informative, concise, and actually entertaining; at least to me. Yes, I DID learn things from this; I may never use them in practice [being from USA], but I will remember them.
My Asian wife passed her test this year ( first time) for me it was a refresher course, as is this video thank you for these explanations , we are never too old to learn.
Ashamed to admit I learnt a lot from this video The wide lines indicating flow/priority of traffic, the brackets indicating what road is leading to, and never noticed the gap in a roundabout ahah! Would have assumed that the gap means you can’t go round more than once? Thanks a lot, I’ve subscribed 👍🏻
I found this very interesting and well explained. I also found it extremely relaxing which I wasn't expecting so I really hope you do more videos like this :)
This year I celebrate 50 years with a full driver’s licence, and coincidently 50 years in the construction industry, predominantly working on major road and rail infrastructure projects in the UK and the last 20 years, internationally. Humbly, I can say nothing came as a surprise in this video, but only because the complexity of designing road traffic signs is something familiar to me due to my occupation. I enjoyed this video, mainly because the presenter has a legal approach and his choice of wording is clear, accurate and in the same style that I’ve had to develop when writing claims and court/ arbitration submissions, as opposed to normal conversational language. Well done that man 👍🏻
Isn't everyone entitled to NHS? Even all the immigrants? It's why half of them come to the UK, and for easy money from the dole. Not to mention the free housing (furnished) etc blah blah blah. Blame the BBC for so many docu's on that subject.
Love the channel. Can you please do a video about if businesses are allowed to enforce "you must wear a mask upon entry". I would REALLY love to see your expert opinion. Thanks Lee.
Very good thank you, I am a truck driver, yet I must admit I did not know about the gap on roundabout signs. I knew the other points though lol. Thank you for the information and your time.
I've never even noticed the gap after driving for 45 years but - as is intended with road sign logic - it was immediately obvious what it meant as soon as it was pointed out. Neither had I noticed the same on French or any other roundabout signs on the Continent.
I have been driving for 40years and not really noticed the gap in the roundabout sign, so didn't know the reason for it, so thank you for making me aware.
I thought you were training to become a ‘diving instruction’ and wondered what that has in common with road law and regs. Then I realised I am discletric. I’m a diving instructor, (emeritus).
I hope you do a better job than the others - the standard of driving on our roads is SHOCKING! (295 miles I drove today, and there's no way 80% of them ever sat the test)
Yes please help to teach better than half the instructors who are doing the job right now. How the hell they even got a licence is sometimes beyond me, let alone them teaching others. The standard of driving is pretty sh*t in the UK and it is down to instructors being crap at their job. In another 10 years time or so, a lot of these new drivers will become instructors. Having not been taught properly themselves...and you can see how it will steadily get worse and worse and worse as the years progress. We are doomed. Well...until we at least have flying cars, right? lol
that round about thing is very funny. My friend came from Rwanda which is right hand drive and did miracles in Cyprus. For him it's natural to turn right into on coming traffic and everyone in the car would scream, try jump out or panic cause it would take extraordinary effort for us to go the wrong way.
Could you answer: I wish the red circle prohibitive signs indicating No Bicycles/Vehicles had a diagonal line through them, which would be more intuitive. It’s potentially dangerous and many foreign drivers get caught out by them.
been driving over 30 years ... no idea how or why this video flagged up ... but still i learned something ... never drive in London ... keep up the good work
Learned something today. But I think for me it was instinct. I did it without thinking, The one that made me go oh, was the direction on a roundabout to help people from a different country know in what direction the traffic was flowing.
Excellent information. I have lived outwith the UK for 44 years but make annual visits and over time have found the roads and signage increasingly challenging. I did not know any of the information provided. I shall be better informed during future trips.

That's incredible. After 45 years of driving, I knew almost none of that! Oh, you were going to do a collaboration, on the topic of UK firearms laws ... did I miss it?
Well presented. I didn't learn anything as I knew all that already and thought it was all obvious, so surprised by the number of UK experienced drivers in the comments who learned things!
Same here. I knew all this, been driving for 10 years and it was 10 years ago the last time I did any kind of driving theory. Surprised at the number of people who didn't know these things.
It is astonishing how few drivers ever revise Highway Code knowledge. If I remember, it is a legal requirement to keep up to date with HC. Couldn't buy new one a few weeks ago (shops still had old one). Downloaded it but cheaper to buy than print
Well, I managed to understand those simple signs, but I’m sure there are many drivers that are confused by even those illustrated here. My thoughts are that every driver should have some sort of test every so often to refresh their memory or stop them driving until the required standard is met; in a similar way that airline Pilots have regular simulator tests. Thanks for sharing BBB.
@SonicandSheeps Yes, absolutely. People can’t get drinking tests for months on end and so I’ve no idea where all these extra examiners will come from. The driving test is an absolute minimum standard from where the standards of driving are governed by road traffic legislation alone. That and a fear of insurance premiums reflecting standards too.
Nice idea, but simply not practical, and not politically viable in most democracies. Improving road safety and usage would really improve or save many lives, but just imagine trying to implement it. Self driving cars will solve the problem more cheaply and effectively, although that transition will also be challenging.
@@rogerhargreaves2272 because 70% of the population has a licence and many, for better or for worse, rely on it for their independence or livelihood. The signage shown on the Loughton style sign and the meaning of the blue boxes, why the size and placement of these indications was brilliant…despite holding UK licence for 50 years and driving the motorways hundreds of times these have always ‘blipped’ my thinking. I’ve never had the good sense to clarify their meaning. Once encountered, blipped and negotiated I would simply muddle on clarifying as I took the route! Thank you. I am no longer ‘blipped’. I knew about the roundabout lines and the others but it was good to refresh them here. One thing I would ask however is about the large square yellow lined boxes often seen placed in a traffic light junction.
Don't enter. If you do, liable to fine at very least and camera trained on it is usually operational. We have an awkward one at end of our street junction with main road. Looking right for oncoming traffic is not a right angle so have to turn head further but a telecoms box is strategically placed to render all but double decker buses invisible until they're almost upon you. Also, our street is down hill from main road with a bit of a ridge and drop for the front wheels just where the white lines are. Tricky. Always warn visitors. Often hear and see front wheel drive cars tire screeching and slipping as they try to take chance with gap in main road traffic. Pray for pedestrians to press button 75 yards down main road!
The explantion of the different markings on the roundabout was very helpful! I didn't know what the differences were. This will help me alot when we're driving in the UK next month!
I learned to drive 65 years ago (aged 10) . I have loved driving having passed my driving test less than 3 months after my 17th birthday. Then I went on to pass my Institute of Advanced Motorists test, followed by the British School of Motoring’s High Performance Course. I even joined the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School. Despite all that I have learned a lot in that short video. I have subscribed!!!!
The 2 people responsible for our road signage are Jock Kinneir and his assistant Margaret Calvert. I saw a brilliant documentary about them - fascinating how much thought went into the project! Notice the mix of upper & lower case in words? Why is that, shouldn't they be capitalised? Why use those colours? What's special about them? Why all the sign shapes?! Why so many pictograms & not words? It's a brilliant system. Despite the introduction being in 1965 the signs are genuinely timeless: they could've been designed yesterday! That's the genius of the designers, they created something almost impossible in the design world: non-decade specific work. So much produced in 1965 is obviously from the decade, our signage bucks the trend (& always will).
Im from the USA and I wish I had seen this before driving London, Dunstable (Beds) and to the Chunnel .. it would hav helped a lot ! also took us awhile to figure out what the zig-zag crosswalks were on the sides of your streets .. lastly, took us no less than FOUR attempts to turn into Buckingham Palace lol .. wtheck is up with that .. ?? we were late for the Queen and everything .. : )
Oh! I hope your future road experience is better. A licence to drive is a licence to learn. (though it doesn’t say so on the licence). Be free and enjoy your independence. It’s valuable! Congratulations.
As a USian ('Murican) I am stunned at how much information can be jammed into one sign, and how large that sign has to be. The methodology is different than what we encounter here in anti-metric land.
The gap in the roundabout had never occurred to me as being significant. I've been driving for 44 years and never realised or was aware of the gap in the sign until you pointed it out. The priority signs are self exoplanetary. Every day ia a learning day for me. Thanks for the video.
Very informative...passed my test in Scotland and pretty much moved to Sweden a week later. Not dared to drive in Scotland for many many years...one day.
Thanks for explaining these signs. Not much for roundabouts here in Canada, at least in Manitoba & Saskatchewan where we drive the most. If we come your way now, we won’t look too much like the tourists we are from some of the country!
You see it's the clarity of Your delivery-calm well paced timing, genuine honest clear information I'm glad you are finding success and having some one paint the picture of how and why these legal systems work in the way they do is just brilliance ! You Tube highway code tutorial? There's some legs on that if it goes off ! lol thanks and all the best :)
That little gap is excellent design. I'm not a licensed driver and I'm from the US (yes, it's as awful as they say, I'm basically at the mercy of friends and family), and I still knew what it meant before being told because of the basic ideas "up is forward" and "follow the lines" meant I read the sign in the right direction.
I’ve been driving since ‘98, and some of that professionally. I never knew about the thicker line having priority on warning signs such as, at a cross roads. Similarly, I never knew about the gap on a roundabout sign. 🤣 Perhaps I should’ve drive anymore.
I don't know how I ended up here other than insomnia. I live in western Quebec and it's close to Ontario and New York, US. Roundbouts have existed for as long as I can remember though many didn't follow roundabout rules until a proliferation of roundabout building starting around 15 years ago. There seems to be no consistency in signage around roundabouts though that is likely changing. Now that Covid restrictions and risks are in decline, more travelis in order. I'm impressed with the amount of information conveyed by a UK sign and I'm sure the style will make its way to North America soon enough. I'll click more videos in anticipation of being a menace on UK roads in a summer or two.
In that first segment, I always thought that the red arrow was the clue to priority. I had never given a thought to the thickness of the arrow. As has been said many times, we're learning all the time and for me that's 60 years driving and counting!
Yeah I knew all of that. That sign is slightly wrong though, there isn't enough padding between the road number and the direction, but thats a minor issue not many people would notice.
My friends wonder why I get nervous at roundabouts. Firstly because I failed my first test on one so badly the examiner took the wheel and second because the signs for them are so confusing. You have explained it well and I actually learned something. My sat nav was always confusing me about exits and now I understand why. Thank you, big relief!
I learnt a new thing while training to be a driving instructor. The white center line is called the hazard indicator line. Maybe that's something you can talk about.
I thought the little void in the roundabout meant "don't bypass left-lane queues by going in the right lane and doing a loop of the roundabout to cross/go left" which I do more times than I care to admit 🤫
A useful bit of signage info that I frustratingly have first hand experience of. According to insurance companies the painted on roadmarkings in a private carpark (eg service station, supermarket, etc) are advisory and not legally mandated. Therefore you can be liable for following the rules when someone else isn't
Known that Gants Hill junction very well for over 30 years. Also got to know the Wrexham junction well over last 5 years. Both on same journey to family who moved to North Wales from East London
It goes to show how good the sign design is, because it turns out I did know this without ever knowing I knew it I just kind of took it as that must be what it means without realising
Our roundabout signs (here in the US) use arrows to indicate which direction the roundabout traffic goes. and it will have the bars leaving off the circle indicating roads you can exit to.
I only recently noticed the order of Motoway Services Sign along side the Road the Nearest being at the bottom I'm sure this was never pointed out to me by any of my instructors maybe because I was driving on local roads, But still it seams strange because we read a book from the top down! Very helpful video!!!

You could also mention the difference/reason in signage colours too.
Highway code: most bought, least read.
As someone coming from a country where we would never use such a sign to describe a roundabout, I would falsely and dangerously assume, that there would be no traffic coming from my right...
'Assumptions' can, and quite often do, lead people into trouble. Always check and be sure.
I didn't know why the gap was there so thank you BBB.
Apropos of absolutely nothing, I was reading about Sir Walter Warboys a couple of hours ago.

I never knew or dug deep,in detail about roundabout . Thank-you for teaching me something new and your channel is fantastic.
Honestly, it was better than any of those completely unrealistic car adverts we keep seeing!
@@gunner678 I’d say it’s due to the lack of good public transport system (apart from big cities). Also, comfort, family oriented lifestyle, etc 🤷🏻♂️
what about yellow boxes, people drive me mad with their lack of knowledge about how to negotiate those.
😁👍
My Asian wife passed her test this year ( first time) for me it was a refresher course, as is this video thank you for these explanations , we are never too old to learn.
Ashamed to admit I learnt a lot from this video
The wide lines indicating flow/priority of traffic, the brackets indicating what road is leading to, and never noticed the gap in a roundabout ahah!
Would have assumed that the gap means you can’t go round more than once?
Thanks a lot, I’ve subscribed 👍🏻
I've been driving for over 30 years and I learnt something today.
I found this very interesting and well explained. I also found it extremely relaxing which I wasn't expecting so I really hope you do more videos like this :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done that man 👍🏻
Thank you!
Brilliant video, please do a video on UK law related to the NHS and receiving treatment
Isn't everyone entitled to NHS? Even all the immigrants? It's why half of them come to the UK, and for easy money from the dole. Not to mention the free housing (furnished) etc blah blah blah. Blame the BBC for so many docu's on that subject.
@@toriawelsh7274 Now that is what you call a segue

Love the channel. Can you please do a video about if businesses are allowed to enforce "you must wear a mask upon entry". I would REALLY love to see your expert opinion. Thanks Lee.
Coming from another country, I found this most helpful.
The concepts are quite elegant and intuitive for drivers
Thanks
Very good thank you, I am a truck driver, yet I must admit I did not know about the gap on roundabout signs. I knew the other points though lol. Thank you for the information and your time.
I've never even noticed the gap after driving for 45 years but - as is intended with road sign logic - it was immediately obvious what it meant as soon as it was pointed out. Neither had I noticed the same on French or any other roundabout signs on the Continent.
I had no idea about the ‘ lorry apron’. Clever idea. Effective too.
I have been driving for 40years and not really noticed the gap in the roundabout sign, so didn't know the reason for it, so thank you for making me aware.
40 years on the road i never knew what the gap was for.
Many thanks.going to test my partner now and she knows everything.this will be very intresting
I thought you were training to become a ‘diving instruction’ and wondered what that has in common with road law and regs. Then I realised I am discletric. I’m a diving instructor, (emeritus).
@@Arcticnick what u on about ?
@@TexLfc Why don’t you start by explaining yourself, first?
That is NOT the way to typically endear yourself to people if you wish to be received warmly and taken seriously.
Amazes me How many people must be driving around and not knowing this stuff. Though does explain why most drivers are absolutely shocking.
I'm hoping to become a driving instructor in the next couple of months. Thankfully, none of these surprised me! 😂
It’s potentially dangerous and many foreign drivers get caught out by them.
been driving over 30 years ... no idea how or why this video flagged up ... but still i learned something ... never drive in London ... keep up the good work
It shows the direction of travel.
It's totally self explanatory tbh, it just inherently makes sense
Learned something today. But I think for me it was instinct. I did it without thinking, The one that made me go oh, was the direction on a roundabout to help people from a different country know in what direction the traffic was flowing.
I learned everything new today. Thanks
Excellent information. I have lived outwith the UK for 44 years but make annual visits and over time have found the roads and signage increasingly challenging. I did not know any of the information provided. I shall be better informed during future trips.
I always wondered why there was a gap in sign's diagram of an Island, now I know, the rest although interesting I already knew.
I thought before listening that it was going to be illegal to go round a roundabout twice!
@@waltermcphee3787 It's not illegal, however changing lanes to be in the correct one (back into centre, then outer for your exit) may prove difficult when busy -- so you may end up breaking a road rule accidentally
I was surprised (forgot) about the "leading up to" bottom up order rather than top down.

it is shocking that you need to explain this stuff to drivers who passed a test in the uk . but it explains the std of driving in newcastle were red lights ,double yellow lines and loading bays mean nothing ! along with speed limits and the orange flashy lights on the sides of cars designed to let other road users know that they may or may not be going to make a manouver . :)
That's incredible. After 45 years of driving, I knew almost none of that!

Thank you for putting this up. I had asked many times what the gap in the roundabout signs meant and no one knew! Take care.
Certainly interesting. One always learns something new.
@SonicandSheeps - sadly your probably spot on saying that. 👍
Nice idea, but simply not practical, and not politically viable in most democracies. Improving road safety and usage would really improve or save many lives, but just imagine trying to implement it. Self driving cars will solve the problem more cheaply and effectively, although that transition will also be challenging.
@@armadillito - why is is not politically viable to meet a set standard of requirements to drive a car on the public highway?
@@rogerhargreaves2272 because 70% of the population has a licence and many, for better or for worse, rely on it for their independence or livelihood. Driving has become socially entrenched and, although powers like arbitrary traffic stops and ANPR demonstrate that it is a privilege not a right, people feel it is a right. It would make the US opposition to gun control look tame.
I wondered about the gap in the roundabout sign but now you explain it, it makes perfect sense
I was always told by my Mum that the gap in the roundabout meant that you cannot keep going around it and must take an exit.
It's a good thing I haven't taken my driving tests yet, that would probably fail me on the theory section
I learned way more than I should probably admit, the priority signs should not surprise anyone though, but some people like to be oblivious to them :)
The priority over oncoming vehicles always confuses me. Both arrows should be white - Red seems as though it has priority, even though it is smaller.
Red also means STOP. Which is what they should do.

As a lorry driver I knew all of them. It kind of comes with the job
👍

That French road side was a very poor. Makes one appreciate just how well designed our British road signs are
Im from the USA and I wish I had seen this before driving London, Dunstable (Beds) and to the Chunnel .. it would hav helped a lot !
also took us awhile to figure out what the zig-zag crosswalks were on the sides of your streets ..

Thanks 👍 just I passed my test last week and surprisingly any of my instructors didn't told me this important information.

3:55 A triangle that's cut out of the far left side of the white line would help drivers to visualise the flow of traffic better.
The gap in the roundabout had never occurred to me as being significant. I've been driving for 44 years and never realised or was aware of the gap in the sign until you pointed it out. The priority signs are self exoplanetary. Every day ia a learning day for me. Thanks for the video.

Exoplanetary? If you mean "out of this world" then I agree.
I enjoyed it. Particularly liked the phrasing using Priority instead of giving people the idea they have Right of Way.

I work on the infamous traffic circle that only very recently installed this type of sign with the gap. Thanks for the explanation.
Thanks for explaining these signs. Not much for roundabouts here in Canada, at least in Manitoba & Saskatchewan where we drive the most. If we come your way now, we won’t look too much like the tourists we are from some of the country!

As a Canadian I do get confused by these signs when visiting the UK, thanks
I’ve been driving since ‘98, and some of that professionally. I never knew about the thicker line having priority on warning signs such as, at a cross roads.
Similarly, I never knew about the gap on a roundabout sign. 🤣
Perhaps I should’ve drive anymore.
Been driving 50 years and knew that from my original lessons and test. You have been liable to prosecution for not keeping up with HC, and rightly so
Yeah I knew all of that.
@Jack Burton True, I am also dyslexic so it can be very confusing. I am very grateful for this video for educating me.
As an American in Japan, I enjoyed this video.
I learnt a new thing while training to be a driving instructor. The white center line is called the hazard indicator line. Maybe that's something you can talk about.
Nice one. Although I never got stuck enthuse roundabouts but I never knew why I am using what I am using.
Thanks for clarifying black belt lawyer. Super helpful just waiting for this channel to blow up and help more.
Thank you 🙏
I am looking forward to watching the growth of this amazing resource too. It’s worthy.
I thought the little void in the roundabout meant "don't bypass left-lane queues by going in the right lane and doing a loop of the roundabout to cross/go left" which I do more times than I care to admit 🤫
sounds like a good strategy if it uses the dead lane.
I'll be driving in the UK after I move there. This was an interesting and helpful lesson for preparation!
A useful bit of signage info that I frustratingly have first hand experience of. According to insurance companies the painted on roadmarkings in a private carpark (eg service station, supermarket, etc) are advisory and not legally mandated. Therefore you can be liable for following the rules when someone else isn't
Very informative, knew the priority one but not the island gap - so obvious now I know.
Thanks, never thought about the break in the roundabout sign. Makes sense!
I only recently noticed the order of Motoway Services Sign along side the Road the Nearest being at the bottom I'm sure this was never pointed out to me by any of my instructors maybe because I was driving on local roads, But still it seams strange because we read a book from the top down! Very helpful video!!!
