I think that the most important characteristic of any video, whether you describe it as ‘cinematic’ or not, is SMOOTHNESS. Even if you meet all of the challenges you set, if the result is not smooth, the end result is hugely devalued.
I'm glad to see that your definition of "cinematic" video doesn't require 24fps. Since the most interesting videos involve movement, either the camera or the subject, 24fps tends to look jerky unless the movement is exceedingly slow.
Again, I will be following your recommendations. When watching videos, I have found that I appreciate your tone and the speed associated with It. Not to fast. Just right for me.
Yep, "story" is the thing that is missing from most videos. Even my regular videos of our club activities are the result of planning, structure and story-telling. It takes a lot of work but I think the results are worth it.
I have a handful of "cinematic" videos on my channel that are focused on one landmark or natural feature in each video. I almost always start with a reveal shot and end the video by flying backwards and away from the subject. In between the beginning and ending shots, I perform about 3-5 "cinematic" movements. Glad you made this video, Russ. It was informative.
I agree that planning before the shoot is very important. And you, Russ, plan your videos like this one so very carefully. That is what makes your work so helpful. Cheers from Wisconsin-it’s cold here, too.
@@51Drones Oh my goodness. The trees, the trees. Thanks for reminding me about the trees. I feel much warmer now, buddy. BTW, my best friend who grew up in Minot always told me how easy we have it here in Wisconsin. Have a good week.
Thanks Russ for this great breakdown on how to make the best cinematic videos. I’ll apply this to my next project and try to share with the group soon. Thanks for all you do for the drone community brother!
You are absolutely correct. I saw an earlier video where your added nature sounds, and have remember that as I have worked on my videos. Sounds, music, do create what the video is trying to communicate.
This video was extremely useful as I start tp add a drone to my creative toolbox which previously only focused on still photography for landscapes and historic buldings.
Russ, you never disappoint! I had a big, long list of moves in my phone that I try to follow, but it was too many. I added your suggestions and deleted the others. My only other suggestions are to get a wide "establishing" shot that shows the setting and surroundings. Also, when editing, keep all your clips under 5 seconds. I really struggle with this one, but viewing other creator's videos, I start to lose interest in longer clips. You can always speed them up to get longer ones into that time frame. Your suggestion about planning ahead is vital. Even when planning ahead, I seem to only ever use a small percentage of my footage in any finished product. Thanks for all your great content!
This was excellent! I started in drone videography to add something to my motorcycle vlogs, but see so much more. You always add something, thanks......Bob
Most of the problems I have is how to use the different editing APPS. Not all are easy to learn. I have deleted all of them and went back to DJI Editor. Keeping it simple is the key for me.
Terrific video! Any of you new to drone flying, YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS VIDEO, as soon as you can before you do too much flying. I would add, make sure you get a good, wide, establishing shot. Whether you use that shot at the beginning of the video or at the end, you need a wide shot to give the viewer perspective and help set the scene so they get your story. I have seen wide shots very effectively use at the end of a video...there are many medium and CU shots of something, then there is a shot that pulls back and back, turning into a wide shot, so the viewers says, "Oh that's what that is!"
Great info Russ, I stress this so much especially when people are posting videos on several platforms. Video's that are able to tell a story get more views & watch hours.
Excellent video, Russ!!! I think you hit the nail on the head with all aspects of cinematic footage. I have only five public videos on my channel but have been flying for about a year and a half. I have a ton of footage that is absolutely useless. Looking at the videos I have posted, only one has really had an impact, analytically speaking. The funny thing is that it was filmed, edited and published in less than hour. It was far from perfect but it had elements that most of my videos didn't. Again....great video, Russ!!!
8:53 but RUSS..... I am the guy that has ALWAYS sticks his nose to the window of the plane.... ALL sky shots to me... need to be shared, lol.... great to understand that not everything needs to be a One-Shot run... BUT... 😊 .... again; great tutorial, nailed-it
Another well done video. I'm looking to get more serious into content creation this year and your videos are always at the top of my playlists. AND WHERE CAN I GET THAT HOODIE!!?? :)
Fantastic breakdown of each element. And great tips at the end. You mentioned passing by an object closely and referred to FPV -- have you flown your Avata much recently? I was glad to see you try FPV when you first got it!
Anther great video with ideas and suggestions... I have had Epidemic Sound sound for almost half a year, but I am intimidated by the overwhelming size of it. How does one search out what will work best. You mentioned remembering something to use, but how did you find it in the first place? I waste way too much time trying to find appropriate sounds or music.
I don't know that Epidemic sound is still the lowest-price. I just signed up to another (no shilling here) that cost me $59 for an entire year and has an incredibly good range of music and SFX. As always, shop around.
Most of us, scratch that... ALL of us find watching our early flight videos super cringe-worthy, if we can tolerate watching them at all. The first lesson most need to learn is slow the hell DOWN! 😆 🤣 😂- then, you can begin to truly learn.

Thank you very much. I bought a mini 2 this month. I started with the tips you gave. It started snowing 150 km from where I live, and that doesn't happen much. So, I thought that was a good reason to make a video. This is the result: ua-cam.com/video/cuHMP0LPxtE/v-deo.html Thanks again for your interesting videos!
I am so SICK of the term 'cinematic' it's about to the point of making me nauseous. Stop. Just STOP it (Not directed at you.). It's a term created by 'creators' to make them rich. That is ALL it is.

So true, I see so many videos done with a camera or drone which make me dizzy from all the jerkiness or panning too fast.
I like occasionally mix bit of a handheld captured footage in to a smooth drone shots to create nice contrast.

Love the intro. "Cinematic is not just how something appears" The flow and story make for an amazing and memorable video 100%

Dude, the audio you added to the "rolling stream" video was perfect!
Great water park addition!
Such excellent advice, thank you from the UK :)
Loving the Hoodie too lol!
great stuff, Russ. I have stumbled upon some of these elements myself BUT you've exampled it here well.

Thanks very much Russ. Great job simplifying this! Love all your videos.
Thanks again Russ for the awesome content.

Great video Russ. Well put and I think we all forget the simple basics sometimes are the best
I like the words on the hoodie sweat shirt!
Great advice Russ, I like the idea of a few number of perfected moves.
Great tips! Thanks for demystifying the process.

FPV videos, when flown by an ace pilot are jaw dropping sometimes. Racing through a forrest or jungle or through a city scape can be scary.🤯

Finally!!! This is the perfect video I was always looking for. A different approach, but as always, well done. Love your content, keep it up!
I was going to narrow it down to strafe and yaw control. Bonus points for adding in some simultaneous ascent or descent.
Russ, keep up the good work.
Who me a winner? 🏆
Cinematic - see also, anything by Phillip Bloom. : ) Russ, you nailed it. These are good reminders when putting a movie together.
Awesome video Russ. I love the fact that you made this mostly about the non-tech aspects of producing great drone videos. Keep up the great work!
Great tips i especially liked that last one about perfecting 5 or 6 moves. I'll be taking that advice for sure.
Nice Russ!
Nice Russ.
All good points I can see videos coming out from this. You were spot on.
Great video Russ … I believe that is the Stanly Hotel in your video. Thank you for this, it’s a lot to think about and plan your project.

Thanks Russ

There is a button that shows you songs that are similar to one you’ve found. I use the most. It looks like 2 circles
I purchased luminar. Dumb question? How do ya get your photos to the app off the pc
What if you wanted to record the audio that’s actually there? How would you do that with the drone?
If you use epidemic for say 3 months and then cancel are your rights to the downloaded files good in perpetuity?

I've seen "Cinematic" clips ruined by cheesy music. So have to agree that music and sound can set the mood

No. Just that link
Where are the editing tutorials?
I thought you just had to throw some 2.35 bars on the clips.
