This is my first review of a ground vehicle using my normal review format, as opposed to live commented gameplay. Constructive feedback appreciated, I honestly don't know how well my format works for tanks. The performance of this vid will strongly influence if I branch out and cover more ground vehicles over the long-term.
Do you have a personal favorite ground vehicle or is it just not of personal interest?
@@Knightlostinthyme Oh I've got a ton of favorites, but its more a question that I've been unsure which attributes/stats/specs/weapons/performance/etc to discuss. The difference in how tank A drives compared to tank B is pretty trivial compared to the difference in any two aircraft's flight handling, etc etc, if you see what I'm getting at.
I for one enjoy having more types of reviews. Keep it up!
I enjoy the format, its probably my main attraction to you videos, especially the history bits and curiosities.
You should add a section talking about modifications and what order you should research them
Damn thats one strange plane!
That’s a fucked up looking dog
lol 4 minutes in and I just saw this, kinda forgot he doesn’t do tank videos
PT stands for Paper Thin
Exactly 👍
It’s my favorite in the coastal fleet
Strange plane, I guess boat planes are well established tho so I’ll trust the plane historian
Oh, if you want boat planes just wait a couple weeks, I've got one cookin' ....
@@TimsVariety LETS GOOO BOAT TIME, CANT WAIT YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWESOME
Tim doing a tank?! Let's gooo
Absolutely savage shot at 7:31 !
Then I recommend my channel lol
Ayyy we getting a Ground Vehicle review nice.
This thing used to be absolutely awful with a 10 second reload. Now its actually pretty good for what it is. I would suggest taking a few APHE shells for side shots or finishing off a weakened opponent. It has somewhat similar performance to a us 75 like what is found on early shermans or chaffees.
In recording footage for this review there were absolutely a few times I thought to myself "Ya know, I should have brought an APHE round." but then action happens, and I get into the next match forgetting to add one. I suspect thats a pretty normal experience. :-)
I thought I could do well with HEAT-FS only...and then I had to shoot an ISU-152's side...(Using the Finnish one, in case you were wondering)
3 times at his crew compartment and crew only changed colors a bit before he got bombed.
lmao, this can shoot through anything it faces, it's nothing like us 75mm
@TimsVariety
I know this would have been serious scope creep to include in the video, but felt compelled to comment, as they're all heavily related.
The PT-76 tank also contributed its hull (and role) to the Chinese Type 63 light tank, which is re-turreted with a turret off of the Type 62 light tank (basically a down-sized Type 59). This gives the Type 63 with much improved firepower (an 85mm cannon, with varying ammo types depending on which version/BR you're using), at the cost of even-worse traverse and the deletion of the stabilizer.
China has 3 versions of the Type 63 light tank:
Object 211 (BR 5.0/Tier III, with APHEBC, HE and unlockable APCBC)
Type 63 (BR 6.3/Tier IV, with APHEBC, HE, unlockable APCBC, HVAP and HEAT-FS)
ZTS63 (BR 7.7/Tier V, with HEAT-FS, HE, unlockable APCBC and APFSDS; and a laser rangefinder)
All 3 are the front of a folder in their respective tiers, with the Chinese PT-76B (which you forgot to mention in the video!), the aforementioned Type 62, and the ZBD86 (BMP-1 in Chinese service).
There are also two tanks later in the USSR tree that were intended as the PT-76's successor: the Object 906 (with a stabilized 85mm cannon) and the Object 685 (with a stabilized 100mm cannon).
Yeah, I could have went on for another 10 minutes about all that - the chassis led to quite a bit of other/related development.
Also, China doesn't get the PT-76B. The one in the Chinese tech tree is the original model PT-76 with the flawed muzzle brake etc that I mentioned in the historical overview, they don't get the upgraded one I covered here.
Remember when the PT-76B used to be awful due to just how long the reload is compared to other tanks at the time? Now it's a pretty nasty tank.
Cool to see you do some ground stuff, recently started getting in to ground rb myself after 10 years of only playing air. Would love to see more!
I glanced it over quickly and almost mistook it for an helicopter review haha, I love this idea of ground vehicle analisis with your format
Theres a heli review coming up in the rotation soon :-)
Great first (tank) review! I think the format works just as nicely as with planes, especially having the history bit (had no idea that India actually pulled off an amphibious operation with it). As for feedback, a few small things come to mind:
- It's probably worth saying something about every ammo type available, to provide an idea of what mix you recommended and when to use it.
- On the topic of ammo, discussing how much ammo you bring would also be informative.
- The gun optics discussion would fit better with the armament and ammo discussion and than separated near the end.
Noted.
I actually had a short bit talking about ammo quantity, but I took it out because on this tank it honestly just doesn't matter too much since you usually get 1-shotted regardless of ammo, but in general thats something I'd absolutely discuss with a more traditional tank.
The tactic I used for this and currently use for BMP-2 is to make sure you know every target is scouted in a group, flank around and kill 2-4 tanks in a bundle WHILE moving, confuses the enemy, uses stabiliser advantage, and fast reload means you can consistently take out multiple targets if they don’t suspect you coming
As a fellow historian absolutely love you're typical format for Ground vehicles! Very informative and a good history lesson.
Your typical review format works really well for ground and naval vessels (april fools ship review for those not aware). All that is missing is the modifications you suggest getting first, which in my eyes is more important to have on tanks than planes
Great video again Tim.
Well, I said I'd watch if you reviewed a water floaty and here we are 😉 I like your format in general so I may be biased but, I do think it works well with ground vehicles too!
that river you were in, under the bridge on european province is a goated spot for this thing. okay coverage on B, great cover from the air, many don't expect it when crossing the other bridges.
very fun.
Its one of my favorite spots, no question. Total S-tier move on the smaller version of the map where people cross that far bridge more often.
NIIICE!!!! I always wondered like ,,Why doesnt that dude make that with Tanks?!" Love to see this PLEASE do more. ❤
I love this tank, it's one of my longest used tanks, I had it in my lineup until BR 8.0
Love seeing the normal review format for a ground vehicle! This works really well, and I hope it pays off in terms of views amd likes. Glad you decided to do this amd hope to see more. Im especially glad to see my favorite soviet vehicle being the first too!
Man, that sea shanty took me by surprise.😂
Your more historical/informative style of video works really well with tanks, also getting CASed at the end adds some more immersion
In recording footage for this review, I got cas'ed out probably about a dozen times in total, but that was actually the ONE time it didn't kill me - for whatever stroke of luck, my engine absorbed all the damage and I was able to keep fighting after a repair cycle lol
thanks for the review Tim, your style suits this nicely, the PT-76 is a very feast or famine tank for me, sometimes it's a flanky stabilized heat slinging menace,, sometimes I'm a free kill for the first guy with a .50 cal
Great to see you doing tank reviews!
Loved this. Thank you
Hey Tim, great video and a good review of this vehicle. (One of my favourites btw)
Just one small thing. I feel like if you would use the ground forces background music instead of the air forces, it would fit better to the gameplay.
Good tip.
Took me half the video to realize…. This….isn’t…..a plane…… even for the soviets! Good work!
Suprised to see you do a ground review, love the switch up!
Keep it coming :D (you started with my fav tank)
Cool Video i think the fast forward you talked about in the poll looks good. on one hand i wouldnt want to watch that on normal speed but neither miss it so good choice
keep it up :)
Im happy to see you do more tier 1 to tier 6 tanks, super good review
Dope review!
Noticed the sped up footage! It looks real nice
Hoping to see more of these tank reviews
Soon as you get the HEAT-FS unlocked this thing totally changes
I always thought that PT-76 is fun vehicle. Like it's quirks.
In my home town we have one in museum. It's an interesting bit of kit.
I like it! I think its a good move to branch out. Seems that ground battles are more popular these days
Saw this at a war museum recently. Really cool tank. Quite small irl
I didn't really have the time to get into that, but yeah its quite "short" compared to a lot of other tanks, sometimes makes it easier to hide behind stuff.
Loved this hope more people see this
First time you reviewed a Vic I have !
We have done planes
We have done helis
Now we got tanks too
Only one thing is left
NAVAL
(Unironically what are your experience/opinions on naval?
Are you one of the many people who never played naval?
Or one of the 5 actual human who play naval?)
For last year's April Fools I reviewed the Italian battleship Andrea Doria - check my channel vids page, its still up :-)
@@TimsVariety so youre telling me there Is a chance for actual non April fools naval review :)
@@luigipignatale7790 Oh, there's always a chance.
There are a few specific ships that I would absolutely post a review of if they ever got added to warthunder, but otherwise its a wait-and-see. Very few people request naval reviews, and they get 1/10th the views of my other stuff, so its hard for me to justify the IRL time investment.
I absolutely love amphibious vehicles in Warthunder. I main Russia so I get access to all the fun Russian pirate ships like the PT-76, BTR-80, the Sprut, and of course my beloved BMP’s. I seriously wish there were more maps with access for water to allow amphibious assaults so they can be more of an asset to the team rather than a niche but fun game feature.
In preparing this review, it took .... far, far too much IRL clock time ... to capture the amphibious footage in this vid because of exactly that - the low quantity of maps in the tank's BR range that allow for water stuff. Despite having other maps disliked/banned, and all the watermaps liked in the matchmaker, one would only come up maybe every 10 matches.
I sent a long and detailed feedback to the snail about it, from the angle of "if you have a tank that can, for example, use its plow to dig a trench ... but then all the maps in its BR rage are paved like cargoport ... then whats the point?" and also "likes/dislikes dont seem to actually have much/any impact in the matchmaker, please add more weight".
Would be fun but probably wouldnt be balanced since not all nations have amphibious vehicles or at least at comparable brs
Taking the aphe is pretty much a must for this tank since you should be flanking enemies anyway
Yes Tim give me more tank reviews ❤
I didn't doubt you'd make a great video regardless of topic, but this confirmed that tanks have a place on the channel. Really knocked it out of the park first try! I will eat my words about fast forwarding. I think you did a fine job with it in this video (having the voiceover rolling while you FF helps a lot). Very excited to see what tanks you cover next. My only question is will you be able to squeeze the tank reviews inbetween plane reviews, or will they be replacing one upload each? Either way, let's go tanks!!!!!
Its all TBD. If this does well, I'll do 2-3 more - maybe one per month, in addition to my regular reviews - and see how those do before making any final plans.
Getting footage and stuff wouldn't really be much extra work, I already play tanks "for fun" quite a bit and actually get a LOT of ground battle footage recorded from using tanks to get SP before flying CAS for aircraft reviews.
@@TimsVariety Love to hear it
This is the best thing I ever saw.
AHOY! New naval Thunder-Tuber
to me, three and a half naval players left!
Appreicate the tank review, really enjoy it - especially because you picked a not so famous vehicle. We have so many of these interesting niche tanks only a few people know the history of.
One thing though: Around the 4:20 mark you speak about the ammo and its penetration and the post pen effects and around the 9:00 mark you say nearly the same exact thing again. :)
Would like to see more tank reviews. Especially prem top rank tanks.
It's fun seeing this channel grow and expand its variety and try new things. What was the music used at the end of the video?
An old sea chanty from New Zealand whalers in the 19th century, "The Wellerman".
the goof troop in the first clip 🤣🤣🤣
I have no idea wtf was going on there .. they just kept bouncing down off the cliff into the kill zone .. a soon as it happened my first thought was "Ok, I have to fit that in to the vid." 🤣
I aced this tank by playing it, and I think I'll give it another spin with the recent HEAT cone buff. It was better before Gaijin redzoned lots of water zones and altered the map selection for its BR bracket, but it's still possibly one of the best vehicles in the game. Once you're over the APCR grind to unlock HEAT-FS (which is admitedly most painful for new players without extensive vehicle knowledge) the possibilities are immense. Firing with the turret angled 90 degrees from the hull in water used to be capable of drowing you. APHE can be tactically useful but you're better served loading two HE and the rest HEAT-FS. While the depression and elevation are painful if you can find terrain that only exposes your turret it has an incredibly low profile, and parked on a hill it's quite capable of deleting the odd prop plane.
While it's capable of earning you a nuke and worthy in an uptier, the real primary weapon is not the cannon but the scouting.
A air channel doing a tank video?
A AIR CHANNEL DOING A VIDEO ABOUT BEST BOY SOVIET ATTACK BOAT!?!
Your awesome dude and awesome video be safe out there I agree with you dude
I might be a bit biased because I've been getting into tanks lately, but I thought it was a great video. Also, I voted skip on the poll, but sped up is fine.
A GREAT choice for your first tank review! I really hope you make this a regular video series. Ground forces are my main use, so hearing your take on various tanks and AFVs would be really fun!
Protip: the HE is redundant here. No need to bring any if you have HEAT-FS. Anything you want to overpressure with HE can be done with HEAT. This goes for all vehicles, tbh, and outside of very select cases (such as a significant difference in filler), there's really no reason to bring HE over HEAT for your explosive round (derp guns notwithstanding).
I've found with ammo selection, if I don't bring a couple of HE rounds I'll get tons of comments "why no HE rounds? what a nub!" etc etc, but if I take a couple HE rounds I get comments "you really don't need those, dude". No way to win with the ammo loadout. ;-)
@@TimsVariety Hah, that makes sense. In the end, you do what you think is best, and that's the best for you!
@@randomexcessmemories4452 Its one of those things where if you asked any 5 warthunder players about it, you'd get 7 opinions :-)

Personally one of my favorites. Wish I had the busted 76mm version but it works.
G'day Tim,
Interesting a ground review, You said you were gonna do these in a QnA a while back right?
So what are the chances of an advanced review forthe PT-76E (PT-76-57 in game).
If I do one, it won't be soon, since I try not to do similar vehicles too close together (I have it though, and love that tank).
I remember when a Pt-76 ate my MILAN ATGM with it's front plate. The whole missile just vanished. It was either advanced and classified APS, or witchcraft. Considering it was a Soviey vehicle - both are possible
Ive had wacky stuff like that happen sometimes.
That clip near the very end of this vid where I got strafed after making a 1.5km snipe shot - believe it or not, I was able to complete a repair cycle and keep fighting after that. I should have been dead to rights, but for whatever reason my engine absorbed 99% of the damage that time.
It didn't make it into the vid, but I have footage where I actually bounced a shot from a Jumbo by doing the side-angle thing. No fkn idea how it happened lol.
@@TimsVariety
Lightly armored vehicles sometimes get divine powers it seems. Because those type of shenanigans only happen with them. This game physics are eldtrich secrets. It's the same type of dumb stuff like those trees in Air RB maps, which will tear your plane to shreds for flying 10 meters above them lmao
nice
I love seeing this when playing an American tank
Man i love this tank
The version in Chinese tech tree is my preferred tank when i still played war thunder, i love the reaction of new player playing heavy tank thinking they're invincible while my shitty cardboard box penned them
Something I'm wondering Tim, if you don't mind answering; How long does it take for you to get useable footage for your videos? I know you're well above the average player, but getting 9 kills on one life is extreamly impressive.
It depends on the vehicle, the BR range, etc.
I consider myself overall to be an average player - I have good matches and bad. My top match with the PT-76 recording for this review was 11 kills in one run, but I had plenty of others where I went home with the doughnut. I do good with this tank because I've been using it for years and I'm well practiced, BUT this particular review took me over a week to get the footage because NONE OF THE FKN MAPS WITH RIVERS AND WATER WOULD COME UP IN THE ROTATION! ... I only got a water map maybe one out of every 10 or 20 matches .... so it only took me an afternoon to get 95% of the footage, but getting those short clips of amphibious attacks took an entire damned week just because of the map rotation ....
On the other hand, the regular aircraft review dropping on Saturday took me just a few hours to get the footage for, because its a fairly basic plane with only a small quantity of attributes to demonstrate and I was able to get some matches that let me show what I wanted fairly quickly.
@@TimsVariety Thanks for the explanation Tim! I appreciate it. I livestream this game sometimes and it's kind of frustrating when you watch so many guides, tips, etc. and still end up looking like a noob lol. American is my main for everything. Thanks again Tim, and keep up the great work. You're extremely underrated as a creator
@@Anti-Villain-Wolf No matter WHAT you do, someone will always call you a noob.
I've got comments on this vid laughing at me saying I should have taken more HE rounds as part of my ammo selection, and other comments laughing at me saying that I didn't need the 2 or 3 that I took. 🤪

If this one does well, there will be more.
If it bombs out .. probably not many going forward.

Unfortunately most of the maps with water have waves like there is a storm happening, so you cannot effectively aim your gun verticaly
You've missed out the first flight date.
Is that Matt Farrah’s million mile Lexus?
I really hate this thing not only because its fully stabilized with heat-fs at 5.3 but because it is directly responsible for the cancelation of the T92 which is one of the coolest tanks the US has ever come up with
Looking at the gameplay it should be noted that carrying HE in this thing is a waste of ammo space since HEAT-FS overpressures open tops just fine on its own
Most amphibious tanks bounce unfortunately
What is a tank but a Plane of the ground
Everyone is reviewing this thing it's crazy 🤣
Hmmm i dont remember i met this plane in any br
Does anyone know why I can only get 8 Heat on this vehicle ??
Something must be wrong, you should be able to take a full rack.
I am traumatized by this tank.
i hope gaijin separate post war from ww2 vehicles
No need to take heat and HE, you can just use heat as it will still overpressure, lol
If I didn't take any HE shells, I'd be getting the comments "Dude, why no HE? what a nub" etc etc.
When it comes to ammo selection in tanks, no matter what you take, someone will always complain. ;-)
