- In today's episode I want to take you through a journey of what it was like to train as a climber in the city of Bern during the 90s. I had the opportunity to explore a forbidden, secret guidebook of the area, and met up with @hannahmorrisbouldering and the @mammut crew to see what it was about!
Massive thanks to Hannes Tell for providing me with all the cam corder footage and B-Roll footage!
Also another massive thanks to Samuel Tuor for all his work with the main camera.

Such a nice video - and soo cool that you joined us for this 😍
Somebody should start a buildering website with locations in cities all over the world. Would be nice.
You can check out thecrag. For our city a lot of people entered buildering spots. So it is the best site to use for that :)
I might have to give this a shot...
Mountain Project let’s you put climbs anywhere. There’s usually some to be found in cities but it is not super common.
There's already buildering routes on 27crags
100%
Best climbing video I've seen. This yells og skateboarding vhs tape vibes
Dang homie that means a lot. Cheers!
Obviously the content and climbing is fantastic in this, but I appreciate the care and stylistic choices in the story telling and editing. Really nice video dude, makes me want to pull on some brick and mortar!
Thanks a ton for taking notice and the time to write that. Makes it well worth every second
Totally agree with this!! What a piece of art, keep it up Emil :)
We did this around 1980 and even before! We had no indoor climbing gyms, so in winter time in Trondheim we would go "buildering", i.e. climb on all sorts of building structures. The main building on NTH (now its called NTNU) is built out of big coarse blocks of stone, so there were all sorts of holds, not just in the mortar gaps but also on the blocks themselves.
Buildering isn't always popular with the locals/building owners, even if we never used chalk so we wouldn't leave any visible marks.
Personally I have had the police pull me down twice, under very different circumstances: The first was in Edinburgh on a really nice wall similar to the one in Trondheim and the policeman was a very nice (unarmed of course) British Constable: He told me very kindly to "please come down, you are climbing on The Bank of Scotland".
The second time was with two friends in the US, at night on a much more boring building, only it turned out to also be a bank: Within a minute we had 2 or 3 police cars that jumped the curb onto the grass to point their headlights at us, and the police officers all had their guns out.
Sounds like the USA to me! Sorry that was your experience of our country (American here), unfortunately it's all too common here.
That’s such a funny story haha!
@@revi925More funny in hindsight than when we stood there in the headlights with guns aimed at us!
Yes, great story! Thanks for sharing!
Climbing a secure building like a bank might not be the best of ideas so I understand the police in that circumstance.
DUDE. EMIL. This might be one of your best videos ever! Loved the creativity all the way through! Such a unique experience :)
Ahhhh, such a wonderfully told story of our Bern adventure. Until next time 😅🎉
Until next time!
really great video Emil, enjoyed that.
Especially psyched when you brought some crack out of course ;)
see you in a few weeks
Cheers mate! Looking forward to it
We were all thinking about you guys.
"Oh yeah it's a nice 5+, good warmup."
This is probably the coolest vid ive seen by you. The cuts to the more heartfelt and grainy sections are beautiful
Now that these beautiful designed guidebooks are no confidential insider tips any more, they can be perfect templates for many more to come in other cities. I hope Toby Segar will get there some day to try some of the challenges ;) Special appreciation for how this video was filmed and edited. Congrats for the first ascent of 'Run and jump!'
Thank a ton, and yes would love to see Toby go nuts there!
This could be the most important video for the climbing community ever. Let's reconnect with the heart of climbing, let's explore together, lets enjoy the movement and lets let everyone enjoy it in their own way
Thanks a ton homie, I really appreciate that
@@EmilAbrahamsson your delivery was so well done! just having a good time nothing preachy.
How could we share the message to our local communities?
btw 0:53 LOL
so sick, really loved the flips between 16:9 and 4:3 filming too!
This is so interesting! It seems like there was a time, when bouldering could have become an urban sport if it had taken off before the dawn of gyms. I wonder if climbing becomes popular enough, we might see this sort of approach pop up again among more marginalized communities like parkour did.
I got so hyped watching this video! I tried this once or twice, but not at this level, ahah
Great video Emil, let's go 🔥🔥
Nice!! Go out and get it my friend 🔥 and thanks! 😄
@@EmilAbrahamsson I've mentioned many times to my friends I want us to get out early on a Sunday morning and go Buildering in Malmö. Just explore what is there :P
Maybe add the stuff to 27 crags ^^
That’s exactly how I trained in the 80s and 90s.
There’s a bridge in Nottingham called Trent Bridge. There are lots of traverses there. Some long and hard enough to be 8a routes.
That’s so cool to hear! Really cool to explore some roots like this
Dude you should work on a guide book for your own city in the stlye of the one you used in this one!
No joke, I’ve started writing down places!!
doesn't everyone want to do one now? i do
I've been in a rock climbing gym probably 3 times in my life, and even though I had fun it obviously isn't something I'm passionate about.
5 minutes into the video I feel like this is all I want to do is climb stuff -- The story telling, the videography, the narration are just awesome. This video is a work of art.
Damn if i had known... i have been city bouldering in bern using this guidebook for years. Would have loved to join
come to vienna next, we have an urban boulder guidebook and annual urban climbing competition :)
That’s so sick!!
Amazing, but don't burn all the good spots. Keep yours not secret, but close, and shared liberally with those who are worthy. Who is worthy? You decide.
This guy decided we are all worthy, which I appreciate philosophically, but concerns me operationally.
I cannot tell you how keen I am to see urban climbing of this calibre
Nice to see some of the big outdoor companies starting to see the value in UA-cam climbing content creators.
Similarly from 31th of August to the 3rd of September there is a climbing festival in the old town of Frasassi, in Italy, where you can climb the medieval walls of the village.
amazing story telling and mood. It really is all about simply enjoying the movement.
i tried some urban bouldering myself on just a few hidden places, kinda hard to get out with at least climbing shoes and go for it if you don't have a climbing friend group. But since i started climbing (not long ago) i always had that sense that you described "That, i could try to climb. And i want to."
I love the old school style editing!
Way to bring it all together Emil - appreciate the nice points you put forward throughout to remind us what climbing is 👏
Man I really wish London had a guidebook. We have some mental buildings here
Banger video. Love the punk vibes!
I remember this time I was with the mountain club waiting before climbing a multipitch route and there was this super cool wall on the street that looked like a fun slab problem. I was the first to try climb it and then a few others followed suit. We had a great time.
Man how beautiful! I ve rewatched your monologues a couple times now. Frankly it was inspiring! In the world these days, it is just such a vital thing to get together like this and just strive to be more... us, human. theres just something so profound about moving the sesh to the city and breaking the rules. When you take away the pressure and grades, this intangible beauty of humans collaborating together to solve a problem becomes the focus. I really appreciate the unique spirit of the climbing world now. Its just us together against gravity. Masterpiece emil!
Beautifully put my friend. Appreciate the kind words 🙏
@@EmilAbrahamsson least I could do bud! Hahaha you work hard for us!
Please collab with Storror!
How can I get that book? Even a pdf online would be cool but I can’t seem to find it anywhere.
I'm a simple man. I see Emil Abrahamsson, I click.
Edit: I'm halfway through the video, and the EDITING AND STORYTELLING IS SO SICK
❤
As someone who trains parkour, it’s always interesting to see its overlaps with other sports such as climbing. Awesome challenges that are such a good blend between parkour and climbing movements. Makes me want to add more climbing aspects into my training. Great video man.
This is simply my favorite climbing video ever. My favorite youtube climber and my favorite niche of the sport and my favorite style of video. Loved the history, the story, the character growth, the exploration, the film and storytelling - very cool direction, Emil. I can see all the intentionality in this and its a masterpiece.
Brilliant Emil. So interesting.
When I was 16 many years ago.I made a small guide book of climbing on bridges , viaduct and aquaduct in the small village I lived in. I wish I knew what happened to it.
Dude the way this video was filmed is so cool. Really like the 90s skateboarding/street dance vibes
this video was a video on the what i consider ''forgotten part of climbing'' or whatever you wanna call it, but yea i talk of buildering/urban climbing, i have always been like why is there nobody that is like let's go buildering in the climbing community, like i get that rock is what people prefer, but like specially in the covid time when most gyms closed, i do not see why you did not see more climbers go buildering, had a nice ish buildering spot close to my home personally back than which i personally used with a friend that actually biked there from another part of the city i live in, pretty much im posetive im one of the people in my city that knows the most buildering spots cause ive always had that mindset to look for boulders everywhere, will not say my city have the best varity in boulders on buildings, but it is deffantly allot of people that miss shit in my city cause they are so set on rock or indoor climbing, well also many people do not wanna do it cause it is sometimes seen as a bit controversial cause sometimes you might be told to leave as said in this video, but yea that is another thing we climbers can learn from parkour, we can do our sport everywhere littreally
Love all the support for this in the comments. Living in texas, and while the lines aren't always as creative, the limestone bricks out here are amazing all over town, I've even marked down an FA at v0 on half pad crimps.
Your turn to create a Stockholm guidebook!
Would really love a STORROR and Emil collab
Like old skate videos. Thank you
Love this video, such a nice feel to it, makes me want to head out to find some lines. You get bonus points for using the clips of Pete's catpass pre when talking about parkour, highlighting the connections between the sports even more than a Toby clip would do!
I've been watching some Rafe Kelley clips lately too, parkour in the nature, and that feels like the other side of this same circle. Jumping on rocks, climbing on rocks, climbing on buildings, jumping on buildings. There's a fine line between climbing and parkour, and dynos can often be both.
I have a spiritual connection with this video
This is the type of quality video that you can tell has a bunch of care and passion behind it. Great mini doc!
Best climbing video of the year.
With the overwhelming positive response we hope you found your niche content.
There are plenty of VLOGs, teaching and super strong fellas channels.
But what you did here is art, reminds me of Seb's vintage rock tour. Just pure passion.
We understand these are very well edited videos and hence take a long time to put up.
I can only speak for myself when I say quality over quantity.
Has Eric seen this? He must have enjoyed it very much.
Cheers from Quebec!
I loved this video! Very inspirational and so beautifully done.
As someone who is primarily a parkour athlete and just does a little climbing here and there, it has always surprised me how few climbers seem to be interested in urban climbing. Doing parkour teaches you to view absolutely everything as an obstacle to be attempted, as a puzzle to be solved. I think more climbers should start looking at the opportunities that exist all around them, rather than always being caught up in predetermined routes.
This is awesome! So much more exciting and adventurous than your typical climbing gym climbing experience. Every city needs a guide book like this.
4.09 getting shaggy/scooby doo vibes. Love it, awesome video ❤
Right?! I was waiting for him to say Zoinks! after that climb 🤣🤣
Pete will be proud 🥲
Love that video. As a youngster me and my best friends had a blast climbing in the city and the countryside in Austria where we grew up. Chimneyed up between buildings or tried to conquer the walls of old ruins or even deep water soloed above lakes. That really is the essence of climbing spirit. Having a good time, enjoying movement and exploring. Thats what climbing is all about at its best. Love the spirit of your video it really brings across your enjoyment.
Emil, your film making has come on so much, these documentary style shoots wouldn't be out of place in Reel rock and other film festivals. I always appreciate when people take a step back and realise that climbing is about having fun, pushing yourself is great but when you forget that its suppose to be for the joy of the climb and not just to post an insta with a bigger number in the caption is where its easy to fall into a toxic relationship with climbing.
So thanks for showing again that we're just big kids trying to move in the most fun way's we can think of.
Buildering! ❤
Really good stuff. As someone who loves both climbing and doing parkour, this really hits. I really hope this catches on again.
One of your best videos to date =) keeps getting better!
the video was just pure art!
Thanks my friend 🙏
Great video! Climbing unites like-minded hippies from around the world. Salute from HOLLAND!
It's nice to see a resurface of buildering after so long.
This exploration is what is wonderful about parkour. I'm absolutely stoked to see that aspect transfer into the minds of more climbers!
Lmk when you’re in Switzerland again, and I can help with… translating maybe? I’m not actually Swiss, I just live here. xD
Love the 90s camcorder video style, or would that be Beta-max to be more appropriate?
But did you slide down after topping out at the playground?
100%
Easily one of your best videos yet! The style is amazing and the quality is incredible. I love the direction you took with it and the story telling. Always such a gift to watch one of your videos
Oooh, that brings back some memories. I used to climb with that book 10+ years ago... Great stuff!
Me and some friends of mine are always joking about climbing obstacles which look like boulders we find whenever we are in a city. Never really tried to seriously climb them though. Might have a proper go and take my climbing shoes and some chalk with me next time!
this was so inspiring thinking of a book of urban places to climb omgg xD like a fairytale, it looks like it have been a crazy fun experience for you guys thanks for sharing, ill starting watching also for things to climb in my city xD
Ever since I was a kid, I would see high places and feel compelled to get to them. To this day, every time I see a ladder with one of those covers, I feel challenged to climb it anyway.
Unfortunately i cant find any books like yhis for my city. Maybe ill have to make one
You should make another video just exploring the climbs in stockholm! I think that would be really cool to see more of that!
the T-shirts and the Website you promote look quite good. sadly they are a straight rip of from a small berlin based climbing label.... makes me sad seeing a big cooporation like mamut copy the stuff of small artists.
i love the 90s style recording!
That might be the best video I've seen from you.
Narrative and central argument are great, there's mystery about the Drs' identity, not too much "here's the beta" which can get a little repetitive, you're clearly having a lot of fun, and I got to give a massive shoutout to both your camera person and your editor.
This feels like a 90s skateboarding video, without the stupid manchildren antics. What's left is just culture, and cool.
👏
Cheers! Camera cred goes a lot to my friend Samuel Tuor, and the cam corder footage to Hannes Tell.
Thanks for appreciating my editing!
At the end you essentially articulate that you've discovered street skateboarding - but then with climbing :)
When I visited Stockholm one of my first thoughts was how many rock faces there were around Sodermalm.
U mentioned toby segar lol, is he big in the climbing community? I’m new to climbing but ive known toby from his parkour team
I'd ñike to do this but I'm comcerned abou the legailities what buildings would you reccomend going to and which should I avoid
In swiss there is a town named glarus and every year there is a competiotion where many climbers climb around the city on buildings. Its pretty fun
urbanists, parkourists, and... these urban climbers make the urban space alive. rather than an unrelated hard tool to be disposed of and not cared for. it brings people together and makes them spot for and look out for each other.
the audio is a bit hard to listen to, it seems quiet even if I raise my volume.
Love the video and how its done like a documentary. Awesome job Emil.
Where would one acquire one of these baern bouldering books?
Me and my friends just go around climbing our school and random buildings like the grocery store
great climbing and without sounding too thirsty you look hot when you're clean shaven
I'm going to start doing this in my own city. Such a fun idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
I just love climbing trees! freeclimb, havent died yet
STORROR ARMY!!
Bringing your crack gloves. Pete must be so proud of you 😄
All of this takes place aboveground please fix your title
Is the guidebook publicly available? Would love to check it out sometime
Emil; what’s the name of this book? It looks like a really good read!
really enjoyed this video, brought this idea back and i really think the community needed this one. ty 🙏🏾
Thanks for the kind words 🙏
Best climbing video for ages.
I live in Switzerland and I was not aware of this booklet. This is so cool…
The building with the indents on it, seems like the architect designed it for climbing.
wow this video is amazing!! gotta check out my city now!
Hey, does anyone know where i can get my hands on this guidebook? 😁
Climbing Trees also work great!
who knew climbers could get even more condescending and elitist.
sounds like the feeling i have sometimes when skateboarding
Urban climbing is my favorite type of climbing
May I ask which camera you use for the retro footage/scenes?
My question is, how do we get our hands on one of these guidebooks?!!
