Place a rectangular plastic 5 gallon trashcan with handles inside to give it structure. I did and am able to carry heavy equipment or groceries quite comfortably. You can pull the bucket out to carry water, sit on, or use as a table.

Well, it's 2023, and I bought that pack. I love it. I would love to have that as a kid. But, still a great pack. I made shoulder pads for mine out of cotton bandanna. And some cotton balls for stuffing.

I bought one of those Romanian packs, i decided the thing was better designed to hook to a heavy field belt with the hooks on the pack, then run the straps like 4 point suspenders on the belt. Mine is from the 80's i think. Your lid has more leather than mine, but lacks the nylon helmet straps mine came with, unless you ditched those like I did... Cool pack, not one you see all the time.

Also, the German can opener cuts from the inside to the outside. You jam the pointy end into the lid and use the prong with the bent tab to lever the cut up thru the lid instead of down into it like the p38 copy you have. Its a faster open, but the cans are pretty dangerous afterwords.

I am living in the UK and I would like to sometimes go and do things like you, the only problem I have is that I don't know what are the rules around campfires in UK forests. Was this in a AONB? Can I light up a small fire in one? Congrats on the video! really nice presentation of the items :)

I watch so many videos where guys complain about this mess kit being “not very good”. And for cooking, it’s not. But it also was not intended for cooking. The USGI mess kit was designed with one purpose in mind, feeding the masses as fast as possible. In a pinch it “could” be used as a cook set but that was not its primary purpose. You saddled the plate over the handle so that you could hold both in one hand. In the other hand was your canteen cup. And that’s how you went thru the chow line. You held your kit out and the cooks slopped food on it. The goal was to keep the line moving. After eating, you slipped the utensils and the plate ring onto the pan handle. At the end of the handle is a hole that you would clip a dog chain into. Then you’d dip the whole kit into a 55 gallon drum of boiling water. And that boiling water got very nasty very fast. Especially if 300 guys dipped theirs before you got a turn. The purpose of the boiling water was not to clean your kit. It often came out looking more gross than when it went in. But the boiling water did sanitize it. You unhooked the chain and walked away, wiping it down as best you could with whatever you had available. Then you put it back together and packed it away until the next meal time.

how the tin opener works on the kfs is you use it on the side of the tin so your opening it round the side of can instead of opening it from the top of the tin bit hard to explain but yeah it's ring the way your doing it as long as it opens the way your doing it crack on good vid tho like the bag

Maybe use a German Army folding sleeping mat to give it some structure and a seat for you went the ground is wet. (Idea I picked up eom somewhere else and works in my packs with no frame)

Your backpack has 2 shoulder straps. Mine came with 4. 2 of them just dangle in front. Any idea what they are for?

I just got the same rucksack. Any idea what the hooks on the shoulder straps are for?

I am not very impressed with the usgi mess kit. But it does work.

Not sure what you got there, but that is not a USGI P38 can opener. Not even a P51.

    Definitely not a P38!
