    I just bought it today and I checked 4 videos and you are the best to explain. After I watch your video 2 times I was good to go by myself and play with the rest of the tools. Thank you for helping a 70 years old man. If I can do it at my age everybody can :o). By the way I subscribe to your chanel. thank you very much again. Richard

    Thanks for this detailed explanation of background removal Jim. Yes it can be a lot of fun, but does show how easy it is these days to change and produce an image
    which is effectively a fake.

      Well it's not really resizing the masking Vince. It is resizing the layer and any application with layers will allow you to do this.

    Jim, it would hebe been nice to see you add a rippled reflection of the canoes, to match the rippes in the lake, in the water to make it more realistic, but that wasn't the theme of the video.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Yep that would be nice but honestly I am not sure how I would go about that in Neo. Would have to give it some thought, but yeah that wasn't a "realistic" example but just showing how the tool works. Thanks for watching.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Yes they are, but it's designed so that everyone does not have to pay for features they do not use. I get that it adds up, but you can buy them individually in case you don't want or need the whole suite.

    Thank you for your helpful video! I would like to use Luminar Neo regularly. Unfortunately, the function to create metadata (EXIF, IPTC, ...) and save them in my photos is missing. Will an update of Luminar Neo bring this feature, what do you think? Which app do you use to store metadata in your photos?

      Thanks Frank and I have converted to using Mylio as my DAM and "front-end" to all my editing apps, Luminar included. It works great and I have a couple of videos here about it if you want to learn more. I am hopeful that Luminar adds this at some point but there is no information from them about this. Thanks.

  • @vincepalmer9518
    @vincepalmer9518 Рік тому +1

    I think I understand "layers" when you demo them, but when I try to use them in an edit later it becomes evident that I do not. Perhaps another in-depth tutorial on layers would helpful if other viewers are having the same issue??

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Hi Vince and thanks for the suggestion. A layer is just another photo you lay on top of your first/base photo. Then you can use masks to paint in just a part of it. In this case, I removed the background from the puffin layer, and stuck the now background-less puffin on top of another photo (of the lagoon). Each photo is its own layer and you can reorder them etc. Hope that makes sense. It's sort of like in the old school days when a teacher would show a transparency on the overhead projector, and they could lay more transparencies on top, etc. Sorta like that I guess.

    Great video Jim as usual. I noticed one disturbing thing though, the canoes really didn't look they are on water. It would have been nice if you could somehow bring that water touching the canoes so that we can get that floating feeling.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому

      Yeah I definitely think with composites you need to spend time getting precise masks and ensuring you really "sell" the idea of the image. Hard to do in a quick tutorial. 😀 Thanks for watching.

  • @andreask.6872
    @andreask.6872 Рік тому +2

    Hi Jim, thanks for this video. I really don't mean this to sound cynical, but the constant evolution of Luminar NEO and On1 is forcing Adobe to improve Lightroom (CC) and Camera RAW. For that I am really grateful to Skylum and On1. Especially with the masking tools, Adobe is miles ahead of Luminar NEO after the latest update. But that is also because the masking tools are not consistent in Luminar NEO: Sky Replacement AI usually works wonderfully, but apparently uses a different algoríthm than AI masking. Here it comes again and again to unsightly transitions, which one must remove laboriously.
    Please don't misunderstand, this is not a criticism of you. I still like to use Luminar NEO for fast image development. For everything else, Adobe products remain my first choice.
    Finally, a question about your first example: in a composing like this, the boats need a shadow. How can you create this with Luminar NEO?

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  Рік тому +1

      Hi Andreas and thanks and I totally get that. I am glad for Skylum and On1 too as I agree they are pushing the industry forward in many ways. Good for all of us! And I didn't take that as a personal criticism, no worries at all. And yes a shadow would be needed to pull it off, but in this case it was just a somewhat silly example of how the tool works. I guess to add a shadow I would get Develop, slightly darken the exposure slider, and mask it in with a low opacity brush. Essentially dodge and burn but with Develop bc it has Shadows and Contrast etc too and those sliders may come in handy. Thanks.
