I had a 1980 KM in wine red, I always thought it was a refinish, but when I had it inspected, it turned out to be original.
The music store I worked at in the mid to late 80's had to keep 25 grand in inventory to be a gibson dealer. The owner had 2 of these in the case never played, in original cases. Both were the same as the one you sold. With the custom tags loose in the case. I think they were from 1980. I had no idea how rare they were.
"THIS Les Paul spoke to me ...." that's the funniest thing I've heard you say on this channel
I have the early issue CS 79 KM that is completely original, including the frets. It had been stored in a closet unplayed for many years before I bought it about 15 years ago. It could pass for a 5-year-old well cared for guitar. I took it to the B3 guitar show about 8-9 years ago and Mike Rock who was at Sam Ash at the time offered to buy it, but I couldn't let it go for what he offered. I still have it and the creme T-Tops do sound killer!
What did he offer?
@@stealingtomorrowband 2500, this was at the Greenville SC show
4/4 (1") rough cut wood is cheaper than 8/4 (2") planks. Even when sandwiched, the total wood cost will be cheaper. Just Norlin trying to cut costs.
More stable too
There might be a tonal advantage, too, however. I have one pancake body, on a Japanese copy. The woodgrain matches perfectly on the mahogany slabs, so it was a 2” slab they split. It sounds stunning
Not always.
Depends upon the quality as well.
Every production business has to manage all costs and resources carefully.
I played a trans Grey burst KM at Leo's music Walnut Creek in 1981.
It was "the one" but I was broke.
The salesman that week......Dave Meniketti.
A thought..... that "Buckle Worming" could very well have been caused by Levi Brand (or similar) rivets that are located at the front pockets of most of their jeans. I found that years ago....and then began to untuck y shirts before playing my guitars. Problem solved.
For polishing frets, use a dremel or similar rotary tool and a soft buffing pad, you’ll save your fingers and get a superb result in minutes. Tape the fretboard of course!
Tobacco sunburst has always been my fav. In LP’s and Strats.. beautiful… appreciate your channel and the tons of info on Gibsons…. Well done… every video…
I have a 1977 Deluxe that has the same extra layer of maple under the top. Quite common.
My Les Paul has plenty of swirls, chips, and scratches ...it's loved and played very regularly. It's nice to have a quality instrument you're not afraid of playing LOL. It's Ebony as well so it shows all the imperfections but everybody loves it LOL.
My only vintage guitar is my 59 Gibson LG2 that Grandpa left me. When I got it, he hadn’t touched it in 20 years. I found 6 or 7 dead spiders inside the body and it was totally full of webs. Luckily a shop vac and some very light compressed air took care of most of it.
Hey buddy thanks for the call out.
Just love the 70’s and 80’s les paul videos. Can’t get enough 👍
Same!
Ok, so how about the Frank Marino, " Mahogany Rush" Signature SG?
A very nice guitar.
A very nice LP no matter how you cut it. Just a sweet guitar to make music with, whether it’s a pancake, buckle worming, oddly aged pick-up rings or not it sounded really good in your demo and it looked killer. I’m sure the person who bought it will really enjoy owning and playing it. Thanks for sharing the LP, your encyclopedic knowledge Trogly. I have watched your vids everyday and have learned a lot, which has helped me make more informed LP purchases of late. (A couple of used Epiphones, 59 limited edition and an ebony custom from L&M in Canada) Maybe one day I’ll buy a Gibson 60’s standard ice tea burst, but I would like to become a better player first. Thanks for doing what you do every day, I’m sure it is fun, but a lot of work. Cheers
I would take that over a brand new one any day of the week, month, year or eternity 👍
Awesome video as always. An interesting guitar you need to check out is the Gibson Es 355 Crr. They were made in Kalamazoo and had T-tops from the factory.
I'd take one of those! The wide binding in the cutaway hides that thin layer of maple under the cap, so you'd have to remove a pickup to see it. It is easy to miss!
you saying pancake made my dog come up stairs!!! lmao
I just ran upstairs to look at it. Mine has a one-piece body, haven't pulled the pups to look in the cavity but you can see all of the wood and there is no seam anywhere on the body. It also has a definite one-piece top. Maybe the first run of these didn't have the pancake body? It is heavy 10ish lbs. It does have a 3-piece neck. It was made on the 171st day, #12 guitar of the day. I'd be curious on your thoughts on Trogly?
You won't be able to see this layer of Maple unless you remove the pickups. The thick binding in the cutaway will hide it
I would have sworn this example has a one piece top too from what I can see. Edit: After a second viewing, I do see it now.
@@Trog Hmm, I'll have to check. It must be very thin and not run the length of the body? The entire visible body is one piece of wood. Anyway, it is an interesting guitar and to me, it plays and sounds great. Thanks for responding, I enjoy your channel.
Congrats to Who ever is buying this. Nice guitar!
Definitely a joy to play!!!
Nice km.beautiful dark
fretboard
Beautiful piece! 🤘
What was the point in having that very thin maple layer between the mahogany in the “pancake” body? Why not just glue the mahogany together and leave the thin maple layer out?
My guess would be something to do with strengthening the body, but if it DID strengthen it, then why did they stop doing it?
Wow that top looks almost like it’s once piece. Great players guitar. I’m sure the guy who bought it will love it
Those worming marks on the back aren’t actually from a belt buckle, they are from the rivets on the pockets of your jeans
Yep, rivet divots!
love it when these post early :)
The clean white pickups really pop against that tobacco burst. Nice instrument.
I like 70s custom Les Paul s. Had some thru the years when I was young. They are sweet 😎👍👌👋💯
Can we expect to see your review of the 58 korina epiphones any time soon? Would like to see your take on those vs the Gibsons
if someone NGDs one - sure!
Your attention to detail, and complete knowledge of every guitar you inspect, just amazes me.
I love this channel, and I'm learning lots!
My late best friend searched many years for his ideal LP and found a gorgeous, 100% original KM - much better shape cosmetically than this one - in the mid-2000s. It was his main Gibson until he passed ten years ago. Lovely to look at and it sounded like a million bucks.
The way the pickups drove the input when you were running clean into the amp, it was good to know that it was because the pickups are hot, not because they are second-rate or faulty or anything.
Hey everyone! An amazing KM indeed
Nice KM! What years is that case from? I have one of those too but I got it used with a 1999 Tobacco Burst I bought in 2010 and it feels way older than the guitar
The guy got a gem !
Hey Austin one of my guitars I had to sell was smiler to this color 😂 man life is hard some times man thanks for this video
I got some of that polish and put it on my neck, but all it did was ruin a perfectly good dress shirt! I think it would be only fair that you replace it with an awesome Trogly T, black, XL!!! (Kidding, kinda)!watch every day and even if I don't get a shirt, I'll keep watching ! Thanx brother, keep all the info comming! ✌️😁
VERY nice guitar.
Austin, I seen a KM listed recently with dot inlays and bound neck. Wasn't sure if that was an option.
The guitar playing in this vid was freakin’ great, Trog. Love that sunburst, dude you’re right: you should’ve kept it.
I love that acoustic outro in your vids. Did you play that? And is that a Gibson acoustic? It’s the best sounding acoustic since my Fender DG-20S. That’s a cool song right there. That song is about about how life is for living.
That and the detailed appreciation for the craftsmanship, how you play the damn guitars right… dude - I am a proud Troglodyte. Rock on, man.🤟🏼I’m gonna search for one of your vids with a seven string Les Paul in it. In the meantime though I’ll just keep watching your new vids, mostly.
We can’t all take Trog with us to demo Gibsons at the music store - new or vintage. But we can get some kick-ass information - entertaining too🤟🏼🎶
Such a beauty
This les paul spoke to me...?
I really like the paint job on this one
Sounds great very nice guitar for it’s age and use it’s a true player for sure it looks really comfortable to play
I found the sound very vintage-ey. Not so far away from old Gretsches.
Beautiful guitar. Les Pauls are definitely made for some dirt. Cool video 😎👍👌💯
Never heard of the K.M. Great axe! The K.M. stands for Kalamazoo Model.
Very skeptical that those frets are actually .0545 tall.... .055" crown height is some pretty tall fretwire. I think the tape on the end of your calipers is giving you a bad reading.. Might need to re-calibrate them for the tape. Actually, anytime I use the butt end of my calipers for a depth measurement, I need to calibrate them before doing so.
Yeah I doubt it too. Not only the tape, but the caliper has to be absolutely perpendicular to the fret in both axis to get an accurate reading.
@@skidmark316 Also a very good point that I failed to mention!
Even if it’s Maple top-maple, mahogany, maple, mahogany it’s still a sandwich construction, or a stack of pancakes.
“You eat what you like, and I’ll eat what I like.” -Yukon Cornelius.
Can’t thank you enough for the daily entertainment
That's (upon further seeing it develop in the video) a pretty sharp looking Les Paul, Trogly. The first one I saw the dark Tobacco Burst I was almost thinking meh it's okay.... but now I like it! Surprised you let this one go it looked like it was in really nice shape for its age and sounded great! A nice well preserved example!
Has it had a re fret ? cant see the nibs on the video
Thats like a Gibson LP Classic or Studio in smokehouse burst Epiphone makes a Std 60s version w flame veneer top only at Sweetwater. I got one and love it rolled fretboard slim taper 60s is for me.
i wanted that but you didnt have a price on it,its been on your page for awhile
Super dark burst on that
Chunky lmao, almost 11 pounds, these 70’s lp’s were cargo ship anchors. Played a ton of them in HS in the 70’s.
That's when they could fall down a flight of stairs and still be in tune!
Whoa!
Which other years had MOP in trapezoid inlays?
What was the proice if noice?
My T-top pickups are some of my fav's. Love the look of that guitar, but at 59 years old, an 11 pound guitar would be too unwieldy for stage. I guess that's why Robert Baker is always sitting with his.
I had a small baby spider in my les paul the other day when i was swapping pickups, he didnt survive the soldering iron tho
Evening all!!
That guitar has history - it's done gigs.
Man I’d kill for a set of double white T tops
What do you think of Epi new 58 Korina V?
what does KM mean?
A little Rock n Roll Train? Ok! 👍 I'm sure the guy will really enjoy this guitar
I would have kept this guitar! I would hope the new owner takes care of it and play's it often.
I don't understand the big let down of a Nashville bridge vs. an ABR-1. The direct post into the body is the same as a post into an insert into the body when it comes to physical construction or physics of construction, just the one with an insert on the end is differently shaped than a straight screw post. At the end of the day, they're both metal posts going into the wood with a bridge on top. Yes, the mass is greater with the Nashville, but that's usually what people want for supposed added sustain.
It's all basically the same, people can think whatever they like, but I think being a skilled guitarist matters much more than what kind of bridge your guitar happens to have.
My favorite kind of bridge is: one that works.
Some people are just traditionalists and if it wasn’t the way they were originally made they’ll come up with a reason to say it’s not as good. Same thing with the long vs short neck tenon.
It’s all subjective
@@Shiznitt_ 🎯Totally get the purist take on it. But the ABR can and likely wobble eventually (with regular use) so I'd rather have the studs/inserts Nashville that will not move.
@@cataclysmicconverter 100% there was a reason they switch over to the Nashville style and didn’t look back lol. Plus I think it’s a better look the way everything is flush on the bridge
Yo
Good evening Grant.
Woot woot Trogly's guitars 🎸 🙌
Maybe I missed the explanation in the video but what does KM stand for?
Kalamazoo, Michigan-where the Gibson factory was located (at that time).
7:20 I don't know what you do with your caliper but no, these frets can't be .054" tall. It would be consider as high frets. This guitar's fretwire is clearly more around .035" .
Spoke to me at 8 grands
What does k.m. Stand For?
That's perfect for playing it until it or I quit breathing, I couldn't be a dealer I get attached to quick

I would put some covers on the pick-ups
At least the neck pickup
What did KM stand for?
Kalamazoo, MI
Such a cool guitar but man alive even Chibsons are more historically accurate 🤣🤣
You said the C word....I didn't know you could use that type of language on the U tube 👀😂

Well done Biker Jon, you earned a Silver Medal for today.
I got in as #19, woo-hoo.
As an arachnophobe, I get nervous EVERY time the endoscope goes into an F hole that a close up is coming.....has that ever happened?
Can you sand down the rash without affecting the value?
